5 to around 10 over past 2 years. Others in ACC gaining on us and we no longer competing with play off schools. We have got to use the portal to make up the difference if we gonna keep up,

They’re not. Of the four in the playoff, only O310 and ugay are slightly higher in recruiting every year than we are. Tcu and Michigan recruiting no where near our level.

For the 5 years including 2021's class, our average is 8th.
Michigan's is 11.6. UGA's averaging ranking in 2nd, Bama's was 2.4, OSU was 5th, LSUs average was 7th.
Note these numbers do not include the 2022 class

If you're having trouble recruiting elite players normally, they aren't going to be any more interested in you in the portal either.

...and we've been slow to adjust..stubborn some might say. But give Dabo credit, we are adjusting...and we don't have a choice.
But what ppl lose track of is only "subtle" changes are needed..not drastic ones.
In fact, we've already seen several changes over the past year....more is coming...
The good thing is we won't ever resort to what MIA and TAM are doing...nor do we have to.
To the point the poster alluded to....the 2019 class, either though bad luck or simply bad takes, really exasperated our "quality depth" at several positions....

10th was a small class.
Let's not over-exaggerate. We weren't working at these levels prior to winning it all in 2016. And the ranking are far from an exact science.
No need to hit the panic button.

We have only had 2 Top 5 classes ever. Those were the outliers. We are constant Top 10 though.

That's my thoughts too. I just checked 247's rankings over the past 10 years (2014-2023) and we average 9.7 over those 10 years (right in line with this year's current ranking of 10). We have a high of 3 (2020) and a low of 16 (2014 and 2017). That 2014 class had a certain Mr. Deshaun Watson and the 2017 class had 5 future NFL players (ETN, Tee, Amari, Baylon Spector and AJ Terrell).

As another poster mentioned we have only had a couple top 5 classes. We usually sit on average around 9 outside of those couple of classes. The sky isn't falling in recruiting but we do need to use the portal a little bit in this day in age just to keep us from depth desparity.

With now over 11,000 TDs (!), she gets the shakes when not TDing people every 5 minutes. She's like a heroin addict, except she's addicted to TDing people she imagines as trolls, and the of course TUing herself upwards of 32x each and every day! And that includes days when she doesn't even post!
Truly one of the most insane-pretending-to-be-sane posters on the site.
I've been very kind to her. Tried to help her and work with her for probably a year now. Problem is, she has to recognize and admit her utter lunacy before she's able to work on it. Unfortunately, when her insanity is succinctly pointed out, all she can do is TD (again).
She's kind of like DJ. She's messed up between the ears.
As a fellow Tiger fan, I have sympathy for her. But at some point she needs therapy. Let's be reap here.

Cherry picking data using just one service. Rivals has always been kind to us. The composite is a better metric.
Class rankings isn't the only metric. You really have to look at the class makeup. The better metric is how many elite players are recruited per year. Overall, we've taken a step back. Not as much in recruiting rated but our misses. We were competing with osu, Bama, uga getting 93-94+ on per recruit.

I wasn’t cherry picking. Just used Rivals as it’s the most popular. The OP is wrong regardless, since we’ve only had 2 top 5 classes ever, no matter which you use.
Our composite rankings since 2010:
5, 3, 10, 7, 16, 11, 9, 16, 15, 20, 10, 23. Average of 12

1 - the rankings are very subjective, based on opinion of "experts" and who else my be recruiting a kid.
2 - related to point 1, if a kid is recruited by Bammer, or OSU or a few other "blue blood" schools. they are ranked higher. How many times have you seen a kid be a 5 star until he doesn't go to mama?
3 - We were really good and our rise started with classes that may have been in the top 15. It's about player development, not totally on star ranking. Star rating is overrated
4 - Great QB play covered a lot of sins. The past 2 seasons, we were exposed. We'll see what our QB play does for us moving forward.
5 - I'll take a top 10 class every day.

Where is Clemson going to get that kind of dough with an alumni base as small as Clemson has? Ain't happening.
You can see how quickly (2 years) this entire situation deteriorated into chaos.
It will only take another 2 years for the situation to settle out on those big-money-players 18 universities, e.g., OSU, Oregon, UCLA, USC, Texas, Alabama, Michigan, Florida, Miami, aTm, etc., that will vie for yearly membership in Club 12.
College football for the NON Club 12 will REVERT to college football's original roots, where 2* & 3* players are playing for scholarships and the best players maybe getting a shot at the NFL.

You do realize that 2020-2021 classes were outliers right. On average we are about 9 or 10. And we won 2 NC without a top 5 class. Granted we had elite skill talent so Dabo has to find a way to attract those elite WR back to Clemson.

We had averaged between 14-16th for the 4 yrs of recruiting prior to winning 2016 Natty. We were the first team since Okla/Stoops in 2002 to have a 4yr ranking average below top 10 to won a Natty.
So with good development, great coaching, being able win Nattys can happen. Unfortunately I believe our staff has taken a step down. Plus add in player development becomes more difficult if players are not willing to stick with the program.
But you can have all 5* players but if you can't develop or coach them up, you won't win a Natty either.

Funny that people don’t understand recruiting and roster management.
You could be a school who has no need for certain positions, yet they sign more and make their “ranking” high.
You sign who you need. The question is, have they peaked or not?
Stars are driven by journalists and people watching which schools offer.
The difference between being ranked 1 and 10 is generally nothing other than roster management.
