Your Mt. Rushmore of concerts you've attended

Top four, no ranks. Can only list an artist or band once. Name the venue as well. Feel free to explain why it was awesome.
-Garth Brooks, North Charleston Coliseum. The man puts on a helluva show. Our seats were so good, when Trisha Yearwood came out, she could have wrecked our home.
-Jimmy Buffett, the Pavilion in Charlotte. I'm by no means a Parrothead but I don't mind some Buffett. But the concert was incredible. It poured rain and I didn't mind getting drenched. The man acted like he was playing his first concert ever, he was having so much fun.
-Allman Brothers Band, Pavilion again. I dunno; weather was beautiful, we laid out on a bunch of blankets, and it was just chill as could be.
-Michael Jackson's 9/11 benefit concert, RFK stadium. There were several artists I didn't especially care for (Mariah Carey was horrible), but there were some amazing moments and the crowd was unreal because of why we were there. And hey, I got to see Michael Jackson perform.

Allman Brothers - Used to be called Blockbuster Pavilion in Charlotte. I saw them several times in the 90s and they always brought it.
Widespread Panic - Walnut Creek in Raleigh around 2005. Hey, hey, hey, how high can you go? They were incredible as always. I've seen them in North Charleston, Augusta, and lots of places.
Dave Matthews Band - Virginia Beach around 2005. Great concert but they wouldn't let you drink in the parking lot. I've seen them in atlanta, raleigh, charlotte, and all over the place. But Virginia Beach was the best.

Too many to mention but I will try:
- Ricky Skaggs and George Strait (before both were huge stars) opened for Hank Jr., Fresno Convention Center. Jr. was drunk as hell but all 3 put on a helluva show.
- Jimmy Buffett, the Pavilion in Charlotte. Like you said, performed like it was his first show.
- Fleetwood Mac, Charlotte Coliseum. Sounded just like you were listening to them on the radio. Amazing.
- Bruce Springsteen, Omni in Atlanta. Must have done about 4 encores. He didn't want to leave.
Best of the rest: Elton John (COLA), KISS (COLA), Eagles (COLA), Stones (Bobby Dodd Stadium), George Jones (SC State Fair), George Strait after he was a magastar (Texas State Fair), ZZ Top (Clemson), DMB (Pavilion in Charlotte), Ted Nugent (Greenville)

Eagles - late 70's in the old CLT coliseum. Unbelievable.
Earth, Wind & Fire - 1981, also in the old CLT coliseum. Happened to be on the 21st night of September.
Jethro Tull - Park Center, CLT. Ian Anderson can rock.
Boston - Littlejohn Coliseum
Honorable mention: Elton John, Billy Joel, John Cougar Mellencamp, Dixie Dregs (in Tillman), Black Sabbath and Ted Nugent

Pink Floyd at Death Valley

because it was Pink Floyd/Gilmore at Death Valley and the stage show was awesome, it was a last second decision to go and well worth it
Fare thee well concerts in Chicago was lots of fun and Trey was good regardless of some loosers on here
all the Grateful Dead concerts, I could probably pick some out but lot of them run together, a mediocre Dead show is better than any other show
And most recently the WSP concerts at Red Rocks because first big real concerts in 16 mos and they were awesome and I loved the challenging weather

Merle Haggard Greenwood Civic Center - they had to drag him off the stage when he started over on the song list
Willie Nelson - Columbia at our angle you could see him step behind the side curtain where a roadie had a big joint fired up and ready for him between songs
Alabama at the Bowery before anybody knew who they were. Saw them 3 nights that week. The first night it wasn’t crowded and the walked around and talked to the 15-20 people that were there
Kiss in Greenville the night they set the drapes on fire. Mostly because of the fire and the handie I got on the way home.
Honorable mention - Boston at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium Listened to the whole thing from the loading dock for free whilest making out with a Connie from Converse.
Almost forgot free REM concert in Athens at Legion Field

Nelson at the old G-Braves stadium was outstanding too. Merle put on a great show at the Anderson County fairgrounds. David Allen Coe at Gators in Seneca was another good country show - wasn't sure I was going to get out of Gators alive.

APM has been to many a show. This is not easy.
Aug 4, 2021, 11:38 AM
|
|
But...
1) Tom Petty Lakewood Amphitheater 1989 - that dude had so many great tunes and was such a showman. He's nowhere near my favorite artist and yet, best show I have ever seen.
2) Kiss Reunion Tour 1997 - The Omni. O.M.G. Growing up on this then finally getting to see the original four perform. Orgasmic. Rock&Roll All Night. And party every muthaphukkin' DAY!
3) The Who Moving On! 2019 Jiffy Lube Live in NoVA. The Who IS one of my faves and when I saw them back in the 1990s in the ATL Pete was in a terrible mood and the show was a live performance of Quadrophenia that just didn't come off so well and the crowd was only into it when they did the hits. So to see The Who in their 70s, absolutely 110% kicking ### and in sync and enjoying the crowd, AND it was with lil'APM. Yeah, that's a highlight.
4) Willie Nelson & Family Augusta, GA - late '70s/early '80s. One of the only times I saw most of my family members smile or semi-dance. Willie was at his all-time best then and it got me hooked. Have seen Willie many times since.
There are so many other shows. My first Grateful Dead show on Halloween night 1985 in cootlumbia, Brian Wilson performing Pet Sounds in 2016, U2, the Stones, Pink Floyd, James Brown, and so many smaller names but great shows - The Feelies in Athens, Billy Bragg in Athens, the Black Crowes in San Antonio...

not possible without days to think about
Aug 4, 2021, 11:50 AM
|

I've been to a thousand concerts in my life, impossible to name a Top 5, or remember dates. I could do a top 50 or more easier. I was very lucky through the decade of the 90's/00's as one of my best friends was a concert reviewer/reporter for a newspaper in Nashville. She knew EVERYBODY and had connections at every venue. And free GREAT tickets, backstage passes, or name on "the list" at the door of the small venue. In Music City USA. At one point in my life I was going to probably 5 different shows a week.
Totally impossible, but I'll throw out a few standouts:
Jason & Scorchers on 12/31/99 at Exit/In in Nashville. The Y2K show, everybody remembers where they were on that date. I used to hang out with Jason, Warner, and guys when I lived there, they were buddies of mine. Even manned the swag table for them for a show or two, helped sell CDs and shirts and merchandise. Been to probably 100 of their shows alone. Great guys, hanging out with them will always be a special part of me. Used to go to other local concerts with Warner, he knew everybody too. Had a recording studio he built himself in his house. Also Tommy Womack opened that night, really fun quirky guy too. We had some fun times during that era.
Saw KISS on one of their original-lineup reunion tour legs in 2000 I think. Was on the 2nd row, right in front of Ace Frehley. Caught like 5 picks from Ace (he's a solid #2 on the prodigious pick-thrower list behind Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick). And got some great photos. Saw innumerable sets of mammary glands, of all ages and descriptions. You can give KISS as much $**t as you like, but those old effers know how to put on an entertaining show.
Jimmy Buffett, late 90's. Some sort of exclusive benefit show in a really small venue. For a local Nashville music academy I think, can't remember. I scored tickets through my reporter friend, we're talking a hundred or so people in the place. Acoustic, just him and a guitar. Clint Black came out and did one song with him, also brought out about 50 pizzas and distributed to all of us. Very cool to see Buffett in that setting without the Parrothead idiots.
Ramones, circa 1990?. This was at Greenstreets in Columbia SC. Lost my glasses about 3 seconds into the first song, as they flew into the air as the mosh pit broke out. Worth it. Epic insanity. One of the bands I feel tremendously privileged to have had the opportunity to see live. I guess I gotta stop at 4. I got Stevie Ray Vaughan, Stones, GnR, Van Halen, Hank, Ozzy, and hundreds more. Pre-show stuff, post-show stuff, backstage, etc. Too bad.

and I started young...
I've been to hundreds of concerts, but I guess my Top 4 would all be in the 70s... when I saw legendary bands, in their prime, with all the original members. Not a Geriatric Tour or missing a couple of guys.
The Who before Keith Moon died, Zeppelin before John Bonham died, the last Floyd tour before Waters and Gilmour had their feud and split up, etc.
Honorable mention: The one ticket stub I really wish had survived was the Allman Bros at Littlejohn in 1971, just a few months before Duane was killed. I didn't appreciate that show until later when the Fillmore East album came out. But I was only 14. Also, any Jethro Tull concert, saw them several times. Zappa, Santana, Blue Oyster Cult, Kinks, Humble Pie come to mind.

didn't play Greenville, Clemson, Columbia. They'd hit Miami, Atlanta, maybe Jacksonville, maybe Charlotte, but maybe not. And then right on up the east coast to Baltimore, Philly, NYC, etc. The Omni was the only venue in the southeast that got the top acts like Stones, Floyd, Who & Zep.

Yeah, I know. I spent the whole week at my buddy's dorm room at Ga Tech... took a couple days to recover. I lucked up, he's the reason I got to see so many shows at the Omni in the 70s. Back then you had to physically stand in line for hours to get tickets, especially for the iconic bands that quickly sold out. No internet, no 800 numbers... you camped out. And he always had me covered. RIP Bill Kilgore, I still miss you buddy.
I've told this story before, but it was this trip to ATL in which I passed out in a high-rise dorm elevator late one night. I have no memory but was told that I was curled up in a fetal position asleep, and had been riding up and down for hours. People had been stepping over and around me. Different times, back then people just laughed and left me alone. Nowadays, somebody would take your wallet and cell phone and whatever, and then film you and upload it to social media.

be carved in stone.
Metallica, Ovens Auditorium, Greenville, 1992: for as much as I don't give a shit about Metallica for about the last 25 years, man, they were good in the '80s and very early '90s. Saw them 3 times in '91/'92, in Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville. The Greenville show was general admission, and we thought we had missed out on good second level seats before running around to the back of the diamond-shaped stage. Turns out, we were on the rail, with a 15' drop to the floor, and back of the stage was maybe 5' away from us. So the entire band was that close to us at various points in the show. Even did spotlight on Newsted during the 5 or 10 second break in Sad But True, where the entire auditorium was blacked out, except for the bass player, who we could have reached out and almost touched.
Tom Petty, Charleston Coliseum, 1994: fuggin' amazing show
Lollapalooza 1993: hot af in Charlotte, and well before they had the amphitheater thing built, so just a big dust field. RATM was the first band to play, and just wrecked shit. That was the most "whatthefuckjusthappened" concert moment ever, since nobody had heard of them yet. Tool, Alice In Chains, Primus. And this pic from that tour:
Layne, Les, Maynard
Pink Floyd, Valley, 1994: junior at Clemson, got high af, thoroughly enjoyed every minute of that
Foo Fighters, 1995, Masquerade, Atlanta: might have been 200 people at that show, I touched Dave Grohl's leg, he flicked his ashes on me, and I almost passed out like 5 songs in because hot af, drunk af, and moshpit headshots
Tool, Bi-Lo Center (I think), Greenville, 2002(ish): it's Tool, so, you know.
Camp Freddy, Body English in Vegas, NYE 2006: this might be my coolest "concert" experience ever. Some band named Camp Freddy was playing at a club that a Charlotte (sort of) friend got a VIP table for because high roller. So, no real cares who this band was, because great table with a big old bottle of Goose on it and lots of hot girls and various illicit substances. So Camp Freddy comes out, and turns out, it's a sort of revolving-door band that plays random gigs and changes their lineup almost every time they play. This lineup was Scott Weiland, Jerry Cantrell from AIC on guitar, Matt Sorum (The Cult and GnR) on drums, and Chris Chaney from Jane's Addiction on bass. We're like "wut". Is this actually happening? Like, we're sitting at a table, and there's a 3' riser stage 6' away from us, and Jerry Cantrell is just standing there, shredding, like it's a personal show for our table. There wasn't even anybody standing in between him and us. A couple guys at the table didn't know who the people on stage were and didn't appreciate what was happening, but a couple of us were speechless, mouths open, that friggin' Scott Weiland and Jerry Cantrell were putting on what was basically a private show for like 100 people. They only played for 45 minutes, but it was incredible.
Started having kids after that, so cool concerts went by the wayside. Middle daughter did go see The Pixies with me and the wife before she was born. Now it's the occasional show on the beach at Windjammer--Mingo and JJ Grey are consistently crushing it out there.

I saw Bryon Moore at Hans'show at Art's a few weeks back, but didn't get to talk to him. I think Mingo may finally be a thing of the past. I haven't even seen his other band--Radiobomb--play anywhere in a while.

Stones at Turner and Metallica in the QC (can't remember the venue). The fire show for the Stones was out of this world. I've seen good pyros, but nothing has rivaled that concert.

The Chainsmokers - Club XS, Las Vegas, NV (June 14, 2019) -Concert started at about 11pm, so after a full day of pool, gambling, drinking, and debauchery in Sin City, we hit the club after dinner at Tao and a few yard slushies for the walk back. Showed up and it turns out that the entire Toronto Raptors team had flown in from San Fran from the night before when they won the finals and were partying a few feet away from us. Chainsmokers didn't come on until 1, so we gambled by the pool while the opener was playing. Concert ended around 4am and we gambled until about 6am. Watched the sun rise from my room.
Old Crow Medicine Show with Lumineers as openers - Koka Booth Amphitheater, Cary, NC (August 17, 2012) -Red and I basically fell in love this summer, and this was the first concert we had ever gone to together. All I really remember is her finding someone with a light up hula-hoop and spending the majority of her evening doing that.
Steel Drivers - Lincoln Theatre, Raleigh, NC (May 17, 2018) -Lincoln is a small dive bar with a glorified stage at the front. This was after Stapleton left, but they put on quite a #### show. Would go see them again any single day of the week.
Dirty Guv'nahs with my friends aerozeptallica and RH Tig - Music Factory, Charlotte, NC (May 16, 2014). -Was in town for the All Star race in Charlotte the next night so I was staying with a friend of mine. Heard rumors of the Offical TigerNet concert crew getting together at the Music Factory to watch the Guv's and the Blue Dogs play, so how could I pass that opportunity up? Turns out that my friend grew up with RH's son, so they kind of knew one another, or at least of one another. Great time with great people.
Honorable Mentions:
Nsync - Charlotte Coliseum, Charlotte, NC (October 17, 2000). -This was my first concert and I was fired up as a 10 year old. My sister had gotten me tickets the year before for Christmas, so I had waited all year for this. Drove down with my mom and sister and we had front row in the upper deck. I quickly realized that boy band concerts are not quite for boys and from what I recall, refused to sing and pitched a fit because I did not want to be there.
Ludacris - Reynolds Coliseum, Raleigh, NC (September 17, 2010) -Ludacris came to town for homecoming week and put on a free concert for students. My roommates and I got some tickets and went together. Sound was awful because Reynolds hadn't been updated yet and with so much bass, it wasn't quite the same. It smelled like weed, and weed only, and at the end of the night, the dude sitting behind us vomited in the seat next to me. Dodged that bullet, but quickly realized it was time to go home.

The Who with Lynyrd Skynyrd opening band - is that 2?

That was at the old Omni - The Who was fantastic and Keith and John Entwhistle where still alive, so around 1973?? LS was basically just getting started, but did a very good show.
Dire Straits at the Fox - great concert and great venue - this was the Alchemy Live tour, so when they were their best imo.
Just to be different, I will go with Rod Stewart when he was still "with the Faces" - at Littlejohn, prob 1972 iirc.
Got way to many others to list, but saw Bruce twice both in Charlotte, the first was one of those where he never stopped for at least four hours.
The most was Alice Cooper - they just to come to Greenville a lot, bet I saw them 4 times there and once in Cola.

but remember that show, friends went. Alice did pop up now and again, first saw them at Memorial Auditorium in May '72... Be My Lover was their big hit then. Todd Rundgren opened. We'd come a long way from The Monkees 3 years prior. LOL. As I recall, the bands I saw the most was probably Wet Willie or Doobie Bros, they opened for a ton of shows back then. And Marshall Tucker, too.
By the way, since this thread has traction... anybody remember the all day concerts at Charlie B's Outdoor Arena in the early 70s? I posted this in 2012:

Ever been to a show for the opening act then leave?
We went to see REO (this was early REO - 2 lps in so they were a true rock and roll band) at Furman and they opened for Badfinger. We left after REO. LOL.

Littlejohn in 1974, I think. Tripping hard. Opening act was Focus, and they did about a 30 min version of Hocus Pocus. Or it seemed like 30 mins. With all of the frantic playing and crazy yodeling and chit at max volume. It was literally driving me crazy, I was balled up on the floor close to tears...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4ouPGGLI6Q
Finally it was over and the Motor City Bad Boys came out and laid down their funk and saved my life.

After sharing stories, I am convinced that I saw the better show.
I think he had an hour timeslot, started 20 minutes late, had a 10 minute intro, did 3 or 4 songs and ended 15 minutes early.
We had planned to do 1/2 moe and 1/2 JB but everyone was leaving JB.
