Another way of David Hood stating he hoped to have seen 4 or 5 transfers

David Hood hoped to have seen Dabo revoke 4 or 5 scholarships.

Or am I missing something?

Yes you are missing the point; probably intentionally

He said the staff could have been more proactive in roster management in order to be able to get a few players out of the portal. So, hold back a few schollies so you have room. We don't do that because we don't really want to use the portal.

In complete fairness, heres what he really said.

“Three. Four. Five? Maybe those kinds of numbers. If I was the coach, I would have for sure looked at a quarterback, a center, a defensive end, a wide receiver, and a linebacker. And would have hoped I could find a fit at a few of those spots. But then we go back to the no room element. How to fix that issue? I’ll have more on that later.”

I look forward to the more later.

In the preceding paragraph he foreshadowed the more later

“In other words, Clemson doesn’t have room to add someone at this point. They’ve kicked the tires on a few offensive linemen and were told no. I do think head coach Dabo Swinney needs to be more proactive when it comes to portal players, but we aren’t talking about the kinds of numbers added at a place like Florida St.“

Part of being more proactive is to be more selective with your scholarships. Yes I know we offer far fewer roster spots to high school recruits than anyone in the country. However, we did offer 3 guys in the last week of the early recruiting period that previously weren’t reportedly high on the recruiting board. Those are spots that could be used in the portal

Also giving scholarships to walk ons who’ve “earned it in practice” is a thing of the past. Unless it’s someone who can help us on the field during a game on gameday, like hunter renfrow, then those are better used finding guys who can.

Let there be no mistake times are hard in the football talent acquisition market. In the business world, in times of economic downturn, we tighten our belts and put extra scrutiny on each and every investment. Scholarships are capital and each one has to count; more now than ever. Elite teams don’t carry players on their rosters who can’t contribute anymore; it’s way too easy to use the portal to ship em out and get someone better. We’re probably not gonna run guys off like they do in the SEC; so, we gotta tighten up who the scholarships go to in the first place.

All this said, Dabo know all of this far better than any of us; yet we don’t have any room to add players from the portal. The only reasonable conclusion to these facts are that he just doesn’t want to use it so he’s not making any special arrangements to do so.

I hope all of our current players stay. I hope they are committed to being their best as players, students, and most importantly graduates with a degree from Clemson University.

I want the vision of All-In to continue meaning something.

You think it’s a weakness. I think it’s the secret ingredient for supporting the future success of Clemson Men personally and professionally for a lifetime, like it has for me.

The torch Dabo’s lit at Clemson has risen the bar for higher standards across the board at Clemson with Dabo setting the example to this day. It’s led to a Clemson renaissance in every facet.

Time has a way of exposing the latest fads for what they are, and whether you like it or not there’s good chunk of recruits incoming (and their families) that are ready to be All-In.

The portal will diminish what the program has been; it’ll in fact enhance it. I also reject the prevalent belief that every portal player is a mercenary with no honor or loyalty and will be a cancer to the locker room. That’s just ridiculous there are plenty of “our kind of guys” who enter their names into the portal. For example did we recruit any of the Bama players who are currently in the portal? Now that their whole coaching staff is gone are they bad people for looking elsewhere? If we wanted em before they signed at Bama why wouldn’t we want em now? I understand that we don’t have room now, but that’s not a justification it’s a failure of roster management.

You’re missing my point; I’m not saying we should run people off. What I’m saying is go after the players we really want in high school recruiting; and when we inevitable don’t get some of em, as it is for every program, retain a few scholarships to use on players who can help us immediately.

Dabo will continue to honor the promises he makes to his recruits families when they agree to sign as a scholarship athlete, but we have to view the portal as an actual avenue to source talent which is something we don’t today. Is that bottom guy on our recruiting board that may develop into the next Vic Beasley better than a guy who has proven his ability at another school? We don’t appear to even ask those questions.

I think you may have a solid point about front end management, but it’s largely 20/20 hindsight now. Every competitive program fills their available scholarships. The difference being Clemson commits for good, and most programs do not.

I want transfer players, but they should and need to also be pursuing an academic achievement. My last statement is why Clemson hasn’t brought in more transfers, not Dabo’s blanket objection to them.

It was 20/20 hindsight two years ago, now its just redundant

Other coaches have adapted their high school recruiting strategy with the portal in mind; many have said as much publicly.

Dabo just doesn’t want to use the portal; this is why we don’t take more transfers. On this we’ll just have to disagree.

With all due respect, there seems to be a sizable subset of fine young men on the Clemson Football team who go to class, work with their tutors, make good grades, support their teammates, enjoy the perks of team dining/travel/camaraderie, and have little dog in them and little compunction to start, play, excel, hit hard, or their bust a$$ in the weight room or on the field. They simply enjoy going through the motions for 4-6 years, supporting their more talented teammates, enjoying the wonderful creature comforts Clemson has to offer, and getting a solid degree. I have my doubts that the number of these players are truly the "secret ingredient for success" versus the more talented 5-star players.

So the merry band of sign 4 or 5 from the portal needs to start writing the big checks. What say you David? Hear the bidding for WR starts at multiple millions.

We had 10 guys leave our roster, either as transfers or early draftees. Could we not have held half of those slots to see who we might be able to attract out of the portal to fill some gaps?

If Cade goes down, we have no solid backup with any real experience. This will be like having no FG kicker if your first guy turns out to be a dud. Can you imagine a major Power 5 program like ours having no good answer at QB if Cade goes down against UGA? One would have thought the light might have gone off after our kicking debacle this year but apparently not.
