YOu low country boys will have a greater appreciation for

Jul 28, 2022, 7:24 PM

this, but hopefully all of you will understand....To catch fish on the Wando, or any tidal fishery, the tide is everything. Well not EVERYTHING, but almost. If you miss the tide, you might as well stay home. Anyway, yesterday, I went to the Wando from Litchfield. High tide was at about 8:15 and the EARLIEST you could see to run wide open was about 6. So,I get all my ducks in a row so my coffee will be brewed, rods on the deck of my boat, cooler filled with water, ice, and a couple of pepsis. Clothes laid out, etc. Becuase I needed to leave at 4:30 AM sharp, to have my boat in the water and running at daylight. Not sunrise, DAYLIGHT. I mean, you really only have about 2 hours and 15 minutes, maybe 3 hours in THIS HEAT before it is over. So, I get up at 4:15, dress, fill my thermos and head out. When I get to Paradise, a crabber has just launched his big boat and started down the river towards Charleston. So, I drop my boat in the water, park my truck, jump in and I am ready to roll...abouta 5 minute ride to my first spot and the water is slick as a glass after a DARK night with NO MOON (Important)....I go about 1 mile AND THE CRAB BOAT GUY IS WAVING A BIG TOWEL AT ME AS HE IS IN DISTRESS!!!!! Boys, am down here 4 times a year and only fish 3 or 4 times each trip. CONDITIONS LOOK TO BE PERFECT...Butttttt.... I come off plane, pull up to him and asked,"Do you need assistance....?"....He did...no power..."Would you mind towing me back to the landing....." Such is life...Could have been worse....I could have run over an oyester bed I didn't remember....

Still.....I will never get back those 30 minutes!!!!

1. Don't drink sugar-laden soft drinks!

2. Tell the guy he should have had a Sea Tow package and you could have raced on!

Best Pepsi bottled in America is in Greenville. The only Pepsi bottling plant that used fresh spring water to make there Pepsi.

I agree with Spud on this. I prefer Pepsi over Coke as well.

I know exactly what you mean about the fish "cutting off".

Jul 28, 2022, 7:42 PM

I was never any good at fishing, but I worked with a guy down in the Charleston area who was good enough to be a low level pro at bass fishing. He invited me for a club tournament as his guest one time. His only words early in the morning (Six am "Blast off") were, "Hold on to your hat when we take off, because we only got an hour and a half to catch fish. When the sun gets up over the water (it was about this time of year) the fish are gonna cut off until LATE this afternoon." He had a 15.5 foot V-Hull Hydra-Sports bass boat with a 115 Evinrude on the back, that thing would SCAT across the water.

Anyway, he took off, in Lake Moutrie, looking for Tupelo trees, which pretty much looked just like cypress trees to me, but he could tell the difference. He put 7 fish in the live well in an hour and a half, and then, just like he said, we didn't get another one until about 4:30 that afternoon, when I finally caught one that barely made the limit size. It was my only catch of the day, but won me the guest trophy, because nobody else's guest even caught a fish!

day, the crab boat day, They were blowing up topwater. I had maybe 20 kill it..but it was one of those days down here when they just don't eat it. They just try to kill it. I hooked maybe 10 of them on topwater plugs with 2 treble hooks and all but one pulled off, including a giant spottail that I had on for maybe 10 minutes....and then, nothing. He was gone. Didn't break the line, pull the hooks off the split ring, or straighten a hook out.....just gone....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, but you kill 'em most of the time. I never could even

Jul 29, 2022, 7:55 AM

hardly get the suckers to nibble, with all my fancy plugs and such. I guess I just didn't have the right "presentation". That's why I chucked it all for the golf course.

Which reminds me, of sad news to report. My little "home" nine hole Holly Hill course from years ago has just fallen victim to the economic times, and closed its doors, maybe forever. They are looking for a buyer, but unless somebody is looking for a money losing tax shelter, I doubt if they find one.

:(

Karma will be on your side. We lost power years ago on Hartwell on an early summer weekday and there was no one around to help so we paddle to the closest boat ramp, and I decide to jog back to our boat ramp thinking it was 3 to 4 miles at the most. I told Dad I would be back in 30 minutes since I run a lot of 5 and 10k races. Long story short it was a 9 mile run in 90 plus degree heat and we learned to always check both batteries even after our automatic chargers shut off. Hope you have a great day on the water and be sure to post the pictures.

Being a lowcountry boy and having to be towed back one time I truly appreciate you helping that crabber.
Now to ol lightningbill. He's right no sugary drinks should of had beer. But don't listen to his tow boat comment. You did the right thing. That 30 mins you lost was for a good cause.
When you are down and ever see a gray sportsman named Spanglish be sure to wave and give a loud GO TIGERS!!!

Jul 28, 2022, 8:08 PM

when his boat sputtered to a halt. A couple of Auburn guys towed us back to our dock. They probably lost an of hour of fishing. I haven't said a bad word about Auburn fans since then.

It was stuck and going to be totally dark in 45 minutes with NO ONE in sight......Crap happens on the water and you just have to do what you have to do...

So did you find the trout? I fish a dock just south of the hill at paradise for reds a lot. If you know the tide you know when they’re there.

ahh I see one nice keeper there. The trout bite has been pretty slow down here. Do not know if it’s the heat or all the rain or what.

The first day, I probably have 4 or 5 big trout hit, 3 to 4

Jul 28, 2022, 9:14 PM

lb trout and 7 or 8 BIG spottails. None of them stayed buttoned up and most of them never even got stuck.... Today, I only had 4 or 5 blowups from 615 to about 10....It was basically over at about 8....Just too hot..... The highlight of my day was when a large dolphin shot right under my boat in about 4 feet of water, came around the front of the boat and shot right back up to the side of my boat, spun around on his side and swiped a bunch of bait fish up against the side of my boat....he then got right up beside my trolling motor and swam along with me for about 200 yards. Neatest thing I have seen since I had one come take a trout out to my hand....Did that before I knew it was illegal. You see, we can't feed dolhins because they MAY become dependent on a handout.....NOT A JOKE.

yeah, watching them dolphins work down here is really cool. i remember i was in a skinny creek, maybe 2-4 ft and two came through there chasing a school of something moving about 15-20mph. the displacement of water they created was unreal. i thought the freaking loch ness monster was coming straight at me.

My favorite is to watch two or three herd a school of mullet up on the bank and then beach themselves while they gobble them up before they make it back into the water.

I've seen that twice on the creek in Beaufort. They herd the shrimp, swish them onto the bank then jump onto the bank and chow down. Supposedly, they only do that in a stretch between Savannah and maybe Litchfield?

I don’t know if true or not, but I once heard coastal South Carolina is the only place dolphins hunt like that. It sure is cool to see.
