I'm not sure that HJ is the better passer, but think he is the better runner; thus he opens up more of our offense and is more similar to KB.
Just my take!

Saying he is a better runner and saying he doesn't know how to run the read option effectively are completely different things. Hunter looks like a more instinctual runner in the open field, but that doesn't mean anything if he doesn't know when to hand it off or pull it on the read option.

He said otherwise about DW4 vs Stout when FSU won shiny ring
Oct 26, 2017, 2:18 PM
[ in reply to But the guy with the shiny ring said other wise.*** ] |

Supposedly DW4 didn't have "command of the offense" even though he outperformed Stout vs. UGA & SCST. Then miraculously, DW4 gained a superior command of the offense while sitting on the bench during the first 3 series against FSU-- a game where 1 more point would avoided overtime (and a loss that cost us the ACC crown, and maybe more).

Most of DW4's play in 2014 came against poor defenses. North Carolina and South Carolina had the worst defenses in their respective conferences. Florida State's defense had also regressed a lot in 2014 as compared to the preceding two years.
Georgia's defense wasn't great either as they gave up 38 points to Florida that year in an upset.
On the other hand, Louisville had one of the better defenses most of that year - in fact, it was very good at that time - and DW4 struggled in the 1st quarter of that game before he got injured. We're not sure how he would have done against Boston College, which had one of the best defenses in the conference as well.

Consensus says that Carman will be a Buckeye, and Jamaree is a Bulldog lean. It would be an awesome flip to get Cade to step in for Mitch Hyatt.
As far as KJ Henry, I think he is wide open. We saw in the Syracuse game that we are missing the depth we had a year ago. I'm sure Dabo and Brent have the mindset that, you can never have too many DL's to rotate in.
Here's hoping we land them both.

Gotta love Mike Jones. Not even on campus yet and he is one of my favorite players already. Just an ambassador for Clemson. He understands everything Dabo has tried to tell people about Clemson.

Hope KB's ankle is 100% to allow for cuts. If he's limited in mobility, he's not as effective and their D zeroes in on him. I'm all in on coaches decision on who starts and whow replaces the starter.

I think either of our QBs can beat GT if our defense is on.
Oct 26, 2017, 8:34 AM

|
My guess is that KB gets enough time to tuneup, Coop gets some good and much needed experience then Johnson gets to stretch his arm a bit.
I don't think they want HJ showing his legs off.

Any of our QBs are good enough if the defense plays well
Oct 26, 2017, 10:18 AM

|
At Syracuse, you sort of knew we were on trouble after the opening Syracuse drive for an easy TD.
Our offense was handicapped by injury and ineffective special team kicking, but the usually reliable defense just didn't show up.
If that keeps happening then it won't matter who is playing QB or who is kicking FGs.

What about Tucker Isreal?

Only the team knows how he plays and I trust the coaches but I'm sure he could have those passes against Cuse that Copper overthrew by 20 yards. He's a solid player and has 4 years in the system.

He's recuperating from a extensive time of being sick. He lost weight and probably got out of condition for football. It is sad because he has a better handle on our system that any of our backups and he's a great talent.

Choice and Fuller also have close to 4 years in the system. Maybe we should play them and sit Feaster and Etienne

Not a good example if Feaster and Etienne were struggling to pick up yards Fuller and Choice would be starting. We play the best player everywhere except QB. That goes to senior man see Cole/DW4.

DW4 has a broken collarbone the last half of spring ball so the coaches probably didn’t feel comfortable playing him at the beginning.
Over time he got his time. Israel is a tier below our other guys in terms of overall arm talent. Watch him in the spring game and you can see the ball is considerably slower coming out of his hand. Couple that with his height and he just isn’t a guy that’s going to play at Clemson.
There’s a reason he is always an afterthought

He has been injured but let’s not pretend we have a Drew Brees clone sitting on the bench.
He was a great high school player but he is not a great college player. There’s been plenty of guys who have killed it in high school only to do nothing at the collegiate level. Israel is in that same mold as Kyle Parker except Parker had a rocket launcher attached to his shoulder.
Israel is a fringe D1 qb at best. And that’s not a knock against him it’s just he truth

Chad Morris was a knucklehead and demanded something that Cole couldn't do. Check the post season when DW was out.

Why is it not a possibility to adjust the offense to fit our QB?
Oct 26, 2017, 9:04 AM
|
|
Why do we HAVE to run the read option all the time? It seems that neither Cooper nor Johnson are great at it, so why not run more plays where we drop back and throw or hand off to the running backs? Running with the QB is a nice weapon but only if it is a strength of the QB in the game.

It’s part of our identity. They don’t have to be huge running threats but they do need to be able to read a defensive end and be able to get a solid 5 yards on a keeper here and there.
If they can do that it opens up so much more in the RPO game because teams will have to respect the qb and can’t just bite down on the RB or receivers

It's time for us to get an alias. Ted Roof is no idiot. He will focus on stopping the pass and dare us to beat them with the pass. GT has an experienced upper classman laden defense that is more than capable of harassing KB. I expect GT to chase KB mercilessly to test his cutting ability and to tackle him hard to test his mettle stay in the pocket. If KBs ankle is only 85/90% he will be at least a step slower than usual. More than enough for GTs defense to catch him.

I do not buy the identity crap that the read option is what we are. Go back the last 3 years and review the offensive philosophy. Yes DW made some nice runs off of the read, but our first option was always to find the open receiver! The passing game opened up the running game. Enter KB now the read option becomes the primary part of our offensive game plan. So if we now are primarily a read option team, this question must be asked, why did we recruit Hunter Johnson and Trevor Lawrence knowing their predominate skill set is getting the ball in the receivers hands? Can someone explain this?

I agree. The coaches get all the benefits of the doubt from me (they've forgotten more about football than I know...) but if a player(s) cannot execute a play, it should be restrained from being called so much. How much does everyone enjoy the WR screen game this year?
I think Chad Morris was guilty of this to some extent: he called the same plays for Tajh/Stoudt/DW4. I think in the bowl game vs. OU, the coaches had time to ask Cole what he felt most comfortable with and schemed to play to his strengths. That was encouraging because I felt the new OCs were more flexible with their gameplans/play selection.
There is more than one way to keep a defense honest. I'm just not smart enough to know what they all are

Not worries at all

This week will not be a repeat of the Syracuse game. Our coaches have proven that they can make the necessary adjustments to win. Case in point, recall how they changed the game plan for Cole Stout in the Russel Athletic Bowl. Also, when our Jumbo Package became ineffective they abandoned it. I trust that they learned some serious lessons in N.Y. & they will not repeat the same mistakes. Look for the Defense to play Lights Out! And you better believe our backup qb’s will be better prepared. Not worried one bit! Go Tigers!!!

One thing I don't think has been mentioned much is the fact that they are calling for 90-100% rain this Saturday night. This could drastically affect our ability to throw the ball effectively pushing more on our QB run game. The last thing we need is KB running the ball a ton...

A friend of mine, albeit younger, said if Kelly isn’t healthy and has to come out of the game Saturday and the rain is heavy, why not think outside the box and just put Adam Choice in as QB and run the ball down their throat with QB draw and sneak plus the option. Obviously running the backs as well. I told him he was goofy, but didn’t want to hurt his feelings.

What concerns me is the lack of TD production from the WR position this year. Our RPO seems like it's 80% run/ 20% pass (yes I know those aren't actual numbers). If we don't get our WR group more touches it could damage our WRU reputation and hurt future recruiting. Just my 2 cents...

QB analysis by Clemson has always been ### are you talking about?
FSU would start HJ in a hart beat.
Cooper can't read the defense and neither can KB. They both make the wrong reads.
I'm done with the groupthink

I have more confidence in our coaching staff than that. They are not ego driven, as you suggest.

And then in NFL. And telling folks he couldn't run the read option at Clemson. That's fine. Go Tigers!
