Another western NC update

Here in the NC high country things are beginning to come back together. Lots of the roads that were damaged and blocked are back open to some extent. Not necessarily permanently fixed but some gravel dumped on top of a culvert pipe kind of thing. Theyre by and large passable. Banner Elk (where most of the NC ski slopes are) still has a severely damaged water and sewer line. I'm told it will be January at best before those are repaired and restaurants can re-open. Keep this is mind as we head into winter and some of you are looking to go skiing for the weekend. You may have to make a trip to Boone to eat or probably even to get a hotel.
The response from private organizations, churches, and concerned neighbors gives me hope for the country and our future. At this time everyone I'm aware of has plenty of food, water, and daily necessities thanks for the outpouring of donations. If youre still looking to help out, there are many folks here that FEMA is not going to help for one reason or another. If you check go fund me, there is still plenty of need. If you have contributed in any way, as resident, I can say on behalf of all of us, we sincerely appreciate the generosity!
GO TIGERS!!

or, let's widen the criticism, since it's true overall, as well, the Federal government, including but not limited via FEMA will send generalized and poorly monitored assistance/largesse to them.

You do know that works both ways. You definitely have a few more choices to huff… the View sounds about right but if you tire of them flip on over to ms. NBC or cnn. You do need to tune in more though their ratings are tanking.

I KNOW IT WAS NEVER ON FOXFAKENEWS (FFN), but it was TRUE that FFN paid Dominion Voting Systems (DVS) $787,000,000 to settle the lawsuit against FFN. Essentially, FFN paid to settle because FFN had KNOWINGLY AND CONTINUALLY LIED that the 2020 election was stolen -- as raised and continually stated by TheRump. FFN's lawyer asked the judge to throw-out the case because, he stated: "Anyone that believes all the news he hears on Fox News must be insane." Are you an INSANE person that watches Fox (fake) News??

we have wicked people governing us.
Yes, when TheRump was president, he and his family became rich from money paid by foreign govts to the T-Rumps. This money was used by the foreign govts to influence US govts expenditures.
Unfortunately, the T-Rump family was, as they had been for years, so corrupted that there was not enough time or prosecutors to charge them for their illegal influence peddling.

Utter horsecrap. There was plenty of time to prosecute, and plenty available prosecutors. But what did they do? They dredged up fake stuff to prosecute him for instea. They have no interest in prosecution for legitimate graft accusations, b/c that would gore their ox too.
I'm 100% fine with prosecutions and impeachments for legitimate misdeeds on either side, but that ain't what the Left is after. So don't give me that bullcrap.

As always congress has controlled what money goes where and for what, and that's bc they carry the heaviest Gavel of all parts of our government. It's like what has always been said, we're d a m n e d if we do, and we're d a m n e d if we don't. Here in the USA, our government has become way to big to fix it even with everyone knowing that it's broken!!!

I'll donate again to Samaritan's Purse and sit back and watch as $157 million (last week) sent to Jordan and another $425 million sent this week to Ukraine. Where's this money coming from? There's not enough for loans to help WNC businesses.
Oh yeah, I just saw another $4.5 billion approved for student loan forgiveness. People struggling from Helene and Milton sure could use some of that money!

Yep. About $17 billion approved for Israel through October 2024 but Biden has been sitting on it until recently and I can't find out how much total has actually been given this year. And let's not forget about another $336 million to Palastinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

WHAT THE HEAD OF THIS THREAD LIKELY CHOSE NOT TO SAY: FEMA has wisely decided that FEMA workers will NOT deliver aid to houses where the old MAGA-ites have threatened to shoot them. Why would old MAGA-ites threaten to shoot FEMA aid workers? Because LYING T-RUMP, and supporters of TheRump, have started rumors that say FEMA will steal their land. AND the LYING T-Rump supporters have said that the initial $750 given to each family, by FEMA, for emergency purchases, is somehow money that FEMA would give them as a FINAL settlement of their losses. (This is a complete LIE, but remember this is just another LIE from a spoiled rich kid (TheRump) that continually lies all day, every day). NC Representative Jeff Jackson, a veteran of the Afganistan War and a Major in the NC National Guard has had many postings of video statements wherein he has tried to correct the false LIES pushed by MAGA.
But, TheRump will say anything to get votes. And the MAGA-ites believe everything they hear on FoxFakeNews and OAN. it is a very sad CULT.

Well, I have to give a shoutout to the government. The national guard, red cross, and fema have done an outstanding job. So have the many lineman that worked tirelessly to get the grid up and running. FEMA will help most. Fema is a more long term solution but you do have to have your ducks in a row because so many try to take advantage.
While I appreciate your post, and I agree with with most, it is a backhanded political jab.

it's not a backhanded political jab. It's a warranted criticism of our misplaced and confused and dishonest priorities. We have made things more difficult for ourselves in times like these by mishandling such matters.
None of this negates the good FEMA has done. It's part of the bureaucratic beast, and so sure, there will be plenty of good in there. The idea is not that it's a bunch of evil meanies. But there are real problems with folks getting the run around from fema too. It's both and.

I wish it wasn't true, but it is. Many many of our country's emergency supplies went to the millions of unvetted individuals who crossed here illegally..... Fema has helped some---- but it doesn't make his comment incorrect in any way.

It's kind of incredible. I really don't understand how people can't grasp the basic concept that the government is a monopolistic provider of "services" (or part of an oligopoly) largely staffed by "B" and "C" quality individuals who have ZERO fear of ever getting fired and put their own continued self-employment and access to a grossly outsized taxpayer-funded pensions over actually doing the jobs and behaving like the "Public servants" they are supposed to be.

There are numerous GoFundMe accounts so it's hard to know what is legit.
I would donate my chainsaw and supplies if I knew how to get it to the right people.
We have a neighbor who collected winter clothes and teddy bears and delivered them, but I understand they are running out of places to store supplies in some areas.

I lived and worked In Asheville from 2013 to 2019 and one of the guys I worked with there is very active in local charities. He has an established network and knows what is needed and how to get it to the people who need it. Last week I loaded up a couple of buggies at Sam’s Club and took a lot of cold weather clothes from our closets and took it to him. He got one of our vendors to donate 500 Weber kettles, 1800 bags of charcoal and 3000 lighters. He has been distributing them to people who need them since last week. If you want his contact info, send me a t-mail.
3 of the folks who worked in the plant I managed lost their homes and one also lost their vehicles and were literally left with just the clothes on their backs. Another coworker has started a go fund me page to help raise funds to help with their temporary living expenses. I know the guy who started the go fund me and the people who were displaced so I can vouch for the validity of this one. Here is the link to the go fund me site if anyone is interested. https://gofund.me/0b253f3e

I live in Yancey County, right in the heart of the mess and would generally say that is true. There are literally tons of supplies in many places. There are some items that are scarce - the one I am most familiar with is generator plugs and cables. But the obvious staples, food, water and clothes are largely plentiful.
If you are inclined to donate, my recommendation would be to wait a few weeks. Once it gets off the news, the supplies will become more scarce and there are literally hundreds of homeless in shelters or worse, tents. Those folks may be there for a while as hundreds of homes were destroyed or rendered uninhabitable. Winter will be tough for them.

If our country (and others) were run by workaday folks like us, half of our problems would be resolved as a matter of course. People work with other people to make all of our lives a little bit easier. America is not nearly as divided in face-to-face reality as some power-hungry people would have us believe.

The Republicans tried to defund Fema, but did not have the votes in the Senate, and the very same lawmakers are spreading misinformation about the recovery, mostly notably the oange boy king who went from accusing people of eating pets, to attacking our distatser relief workers. My sister received death threats FYI, she is a journalist covering this..Some peopel have no shame..
And The fact is the government will outspend charities and private donations 10-1. Without Fema, the area would never recover.
The victimhood complex that some people aren't being helped, presumably because of their likely party affiliation is a major face palm, you would have to pretty cnical to believe politics are in play here. It has more to do with how spread out people are and it being an isolated region with poor infrastructure, requiring air rescues. e. Possibly NC can spend a little money on shoring up their damns and storm surge prevention, until waiting until disaster to handle business, we have been doing this in Florida for decades.
And in closing, if you read the twitter pages of the governors of GA, and NC both thanked the federal government for their overwhelming response, see for yourself.
But you go ahead and act like victims anyway and point the finger at the very same people your elected offical attempted to defund. You may want to look and see who voted to defund FEMA in the house, and consider of they deserve your vote, or just vote for the guy withte R next his name, because you know, party before country.

They should have voted to defund FEMA. Go ask the people in Texas and Florida what do they think about FEMA providing trailers for aliens to live in and assistance to them. I would love to be standing there and hear the cussing you would get. It's past the point of no return. It can't be fixed. A total revolution to eradicate all the liberal demorats is our only hope.

The comment that the area will not revive is Bull Shitz. All government money has a dirty side. That’s the reason they dislike religious organizations who r doing a much better job thanFEMA You almost want to say leave us alone we will figure how to deal with the government failures. Here’s the difference I’ve noted. All organizations don’t want praise but good ole government agencies like FEMA wants to be massaged so they can say look what we did

As if republicans were going to abandon and ignore people who need disaster relief. They see how inept FEMA has shown itself to be and were going to at least try to fix the problem. Stop the spin

Yeah like the Senate which Biden has asked multiple times to come back and pass a bill for more money for the affected areas. In which Johnson and the Republicans have declined to do. If they were so excited to help their constituents why wont they call the Senate back into session to get these people more funds? Oh wait I'm guessing there will be more hemming and hawing about migrants and how they gave them money. If they wanted to actually help the people in those affected areas they wouldn't have even needed to be asked to come back to work. Please. Republicans want this as an issue so they have something to point to as some kind of Democrat failure. If they had passed an actual budget this wouldn't even be an issue needing to be discussed. Political theater.

I invite you to come stay here and see for yourself.
To say this is not political is just incorrect.
In the end, FEMA may very well outspend all other sources, I have no way of knowing, but if you take into account donated time, but by what I have seen, Samaritan’s Purse is way more effective. They are out in force and are doing a ton of good. FEMA is a government bureaucracy and they want, some would say demand, to run the show. Two townships in my area have been “excluded” from FEMA assistance because they would not bow the knee. This is the frustrating part. Locals were on the front lines from day one. When FEMA shows up and demands it be done their way, if the locals refuse, FEMA just take their ball and go home rather than working with the locals.
From what I have seen, FEMA is proving Reagan’s 9 most terrifying words correct.

Thank you for the update. It is harder than I would have thought to get status updates. So this is much appreciated.
I will continue monthly donations for the foreseeable future.
