If usc can compete in football in the SEC...
If Florida can be good in basketball...
If tiny Duke can be consistently good... I know they have a program now, but they were not always great.
If ND can be good in basketball...
Why the heck shouldn't Clemson expect to be good?

Especially not since we're adding Lousiville, Syracuse, and Pitt. League just got infinitely tougher.

Is gonna take a steller class of instate talent that wants to come to clemson. Since this almosst never happens Id say no. Not enough instate talent to be great in basketball and too much pull from up the road in NC.

Florida is a football school .Why not Clemson? It can be done. The school needs a culture change.

under Locke, Barnes and Purnell so can do it again. If little 'ol Duke can become a powerhouse anyone can. We need: * Great recruiting * Patience * Great coach that we are willing to pay to keep

Duke is hardly "little ole"
The Duke Endowment is over $2.7 BILLION dollars.
There are over 15,000 students at Duke making it almost as large as Clemson.
The school is ranked in the Top 5 or 10 of every academic ranking.
The basketball team has always been good even back into the 50s. The team has made the final 4 every decade since the 50s.
Vic Bubas has a better winner percentage than Coach K going 213- 67 from 1959 to 1969. Foster carried Duke to the finals in 1978 and of course K has won titles 4 times and played for 4 other titles.
The team has made the final four 15 times dating back over 50 years and has made the tournament 36 times.
Duke has always been good in basketball and has conference titles going back to prior to WW@ in the ole SOCON

All you say is true. We why do they suck in football?
Because the don't care about football.
If Clemson is willing to hire the right coaches and be patient and CARE about basketball we can be good at it.
It will take time but we have done it before - proof it can be done again.
When I was growing up Florida sucked at basketball - look at them now.

I'm not sure I would consider our brief spurts of relevancy consistantly competing for ACC titles.

We have been competitive in three spurts. And there was

consistency with each coach - Locke consistently had good teams as did Barnes and Purnell.
We as a school have not been consistent largely because we made some bad coaching hires and stuck with them too long and couldn't hold on to the good coaches.
Brownell might be the guy but I am withholding opinion one more year.

consistent basis. We do not have the tradition which counts greatly. The only possible way to compete consistently in this league is to pay big, big bucks to a coach who has a consistent record of a big-time winning. For instance, if a John Calipari came to Clemson, his recruiting record alone would probably get Clemson to compete at the top of the ACC in two or three years.

Possible yes,... likely, no.

In general, there's a reason such streaks as we have in place (such as never winning at Chappel Hole) are in place,... that's because Clemson really doesn't care about basketball. Unfortunate, but a fact.
I'm o.k. with that,.... , football, however, is a vastly different story!

unless you have a great coach with great facilities and great support behind him NO coach in SC, GA, FL, TN, AL, MS, LA is going to succeed. In fact if you look at these states there are only two good teams in all of them. Football rules the south...basketball is merely something in between a bowl game and baseball.

I think success....

tends to come in areas where more emphasis is placed. I don't feel like we put enough emphasis on the basketball program at Clemson where some of the other ACC teams do. I feel Clemson has the fan base, monetary support, and the integrity to be successful in ALL sports. We just need to start putting the same emphasis on ALL sports. I don't think that has happened yet. Don't know that it ever will. Some sports seem to carry more "weight" than others to most fans. That's the difference between us and those "Basketball ACC Teams". At Clemson, I feel like most fans feel football defines us athletically. Until we have the desire to be among the best in ALL sports and place the same emphasis on ALL sports, nothing really changes. I have to admit, I am one of those that see football as our definition athletically. So I am as guilty as others. Just the nature of the beast. Go Tigers !!!
