Wow, SportsCenter all SEC games in the main queue tonight

Nov 11, 2012, 2:28 AM

Didn't see any other games listed. UGA, Usuc (who played a mere struggling Arkan), and LSU.

Their execs must be thinking fast on their feet to keep plugging that tv contract since 'Bama fell hard tonight and no more undefeateds in their hype monster.

I know I will get killed for this, but the SEC has the huge contract (or about to be bigger than the rest) and gets the publicity because they have won the last 6 national titles. Even if ESPN or Mike Slive or some shady figures flying black helicopters made a way for them to make it to the title game, they still won each and every one of them. Against the Pac 12, Big 12 and Big 10. And yes, I will grant you, last year, against themselves.
If we want ESPN to take the ACC seriously, we have to have top tier teams win big out of conference games consistently. We have to win our BCS games. We have been woeful at this. That is all the SEC has done. They have a group of schools that at least a couple of them each year are good enough to win it all. The rest of the conference, including our overhyped rival in Columbia, are mediocre or horrible. But please, enough with the SEC hating. They get the rankings, the ratings, and the money because they won these games on the field. Let's get our jollies from focusing on our 9-1 team, not on when one SEC team beats another one.

Actually, it's not that cut and dry. It is a chicken or the egg argument. The SEC did not begin its title run until AFTER they became the first conference to sign an exclusive deal with ESPN. This, not long after an undefeated Auburn team was completely overlooked for the title game. The SEC has become masterful at controlling their image. And, they build a lot of that image on beating ACC teams (you can't build your conference power ranking with in conference games). Coincidental to the ESPN deal was the start of the patsy game before ACC rivalry games. Yes, ESPN has a similar deal with the ACC, but it is worth substantially less. So, as long as it has resulted in this historical run by the SEC, ESPN is happy to use their leverage with these two conferences to benefit the SEC.

To your specific point, what "big" out of conference games did the SEC win this year? I count one - Bama over Michigan. Georgia Tech is Georgia's only BCS non-conf opponent. Florida beat Bowling Green, So Car beat East Carolina and UAB (amazingly one of the tougher SEC non conf schedules), LSU played Washington, And A&M played La Tech. This is the entire non conference slate (not counting FCS opponents) of the upper half of the SEC. Tennessee beat NC State. So, please explain to me what about that group of events suggests that 5 of their teams should be in the top 10. That is where media bias comes in. Promoting the perception that they are better than they really are.
