there was no "sports media" that was hyping the team all off-season and touting Cade as a Heisman candidate?
If there were no pre-season polls and they did it like the CFP polls - waiting until November to start, so you have a real gauge of each team?
I just wonder if the team didn't "drink the poison" as Saban, I think, once said about it. Or maybe Dabo. I don't remember. The point remains, though.
If there was no hype to believe, if they entered Game One as an unknown entity and had to prove themselves, starting from the ground up, would we still have been this bad?
I know - no way to know for sure. But still I wonder. Almost everyone agrees that the talent and experience is there. It's just not manifesting itself on the field. Hopefully that will start to change this weekend. Hopefully!!

Probably because it wasnt just the media. It was Dabo and the entire program, assistants, analysts, etc. Everybody. To borrow your term, everybody was handing this team "rat poison". Loddy Doddy Everybody!

I don't think LSU, Georgia Tech or Syracuse gave a hoot about what the media had to say about us. Give credit where credit is due.

Cade never had material on-field reasons to warrant the preseason "accolades" that he received............ie he wasn't that great to begin with.
Hype or no hype.........it doesn't change the DNA of this team and program.
It lacks: elite talent elite coaching toughness (mental & physical) development innovation (just like in business, you must stay "cutting edge" and a step or two ahead of the competition)
this has been 4+ years in the making

Great players and coaches don't buy in to hype

So yes, I think we would still be in the same position.
True great athletes never base their play on what others think about them. They are intrinsically motivated.

Not likely. It is about player accountability and dedication - all about the money and exposure! If NIL/pay was tied to performance, we would have seen a much different performance and teamwork. It will be interesting to see who stays and who goes in the portal.
Just like Dre decommitment - I am open for business and show me the money. I think it is time for some corporate lessons on contract law - NIL purchasers need to sue to get money back because the players performance did not meet the implied benefits that would be received by acquiring their NIL. Also, need to sue over contract "tortious" interference by other institutions.
If the players, their agents and rogue schools want to act as big boys, then let them face the consequences of real business realities.

I thought during the pre-season...the GOOD news...most of the players from last year are returning. The BAD news...most of the players from last year are returning!

Yes, because our program still wouldn't take winning seriously and do the things that are needed to succeed at the highest level.
