Wonder what was the biggest reason

Our run defense turned to butter this season? There were games it seemed like we were decent on defense but the end of the year it was like a different team. Watching Pitt I remember being concerned about stopping this little back and we held him. End of the year I doubt we could stop a high school team. I know there were some injuries but thought we had most back against the peckers and Texas.

don't appear to be coached particularly well and the tackling in the back 7 has been horrific this year

This was an issue last season that looked better due to turnovers. Duke and Miami ran over us. Even teams we beat like Notre Dame and UNC had a lot of rushing success. Been getting worse and worse under Goodwin

Defensive ends couldn’t set the edge, particularly on the strong side which is a major problem. Either your linebackers/safeties are out of position, or you scheme around the lack of containment and expose yourself defense in other ways. See all the bad angles that we took against Texas. We aren’t used to not being able to contain and our linebackers and safeties tend to cheat inside for an easy stop.

Heldt is a big dude, with long arms, hard to imagine him not starting opposite Parker next year. Think it will solve multiple issues honestly. But can’t let roster management go so far off again in a position we have such a great history.

History is well said. I can’t remember a Clemson defense so putrid against the run. And yes on our ends setting the edge. People running around us.

The other issue is that DE is a top dollar position in the NIL market because they get the attractive stats. It’s going to be a tough position to manage for Clemson moving forward.

It sort of reminds of something Deon got in trouble for saying, but I think it applies here. Dabo can sell a heady young man that plays QB, LB or OL to forgo some NIL potential for the he Clemson experience and development process, but twitchy players like WR, DB and DE are known to be a little dimmer and they are going to be harder to convince that the delayed gratification can be worth it. I’m glad we have guys like Parker and Woods that seem to buy into the system. Hope that holds up.

Heldt may be another if those uncommon DEs that can analyze the entire value proposition that comes with Clemson (of which NIL is only one of those ‘value’ variables) as opposed to those DEs who choose their destinations in just NIL and prospects of being a starter.
