As an aside - if you're willing to hold signs up for all to see...it's not really sign stealing. But you better make them so that it would take Alan Turing to figure them out.

constantly moving from school to school, and players are now too... there just can't be any "top secret" stuff that your opponent doesn't already know. No magic playbook locked in a safe...

As the Netflix documentary points out:
“Sign Stealing” ie deciphering the other team’s signals is perfectly legal if : 1. Happens in game just 2. Happens from review of the other team’s televised previous games.
The only thing that is illegal is “advanced scouting” ie going to opponents games and hiding out on the sidelines ie what Stallions is alleged to have done.
I think coach BV was just really good at deciphering signs in game!

I’ve always operated on the assumption that if you put any signal through the air there is the potential of it being stolen. Not sure if that’s a fair assumption?
