With all the talk about Goodwin, I have a thought

First, I have no idea if he's relieved as DC. I do believe he has some unique strengths however.
I see college football becoming a moneyball business. Who can make the most of their resources. We're not the Oakland A's. We have resources, but we're not the Yankees or Dodgers.
What is Wes's strength? Analytics. Evaluation. The guy never played the game but has earned the respect of NFL coaches, BV who really wanted him at OU, and Dabo. He earned it as he shined in these areas.
So, with an NFL model quickly coming upon us, without the salary cap that keeps the NFL even money wise, analytics and evaluation will be extremely important. Wes is the type of guy who could excel at this type role.
Wes Goodwin, Clemson football GM.

I am not sure I agree with you about the A’s analogy - we are miles from the top of the monetary food chain, but absolutely agree that the current state of affairs is Moneyball. I like the idea… a lot!

Actually an interesting idea.
What ever happened to Thad Turnipseed after he left? Wasn’t that essentially his role? He was very good at it and as I recall we were one of the first to employ such a role.

Ding! Good point on all counts. Wes is just 'out of position' in his current role.

I had a crazy thought that we should throw a bag of cash at Theo Epstein and see if he would want the job of running our CFB "Front Office". Now he is a baseball exec, but he was the guy that got Boston their fist WS in almost a century back in 2004. Then he took the Chicago cubs job, and won them their first WR in almost a century. The guy knows how to run a professional org, and we have to start thinking more like a professional org. We need guys that understand contract negotiation. Guys that have exp dealing with player's agents and ego's.

We are little ole Clemson in Pickens county. There are two things in my opinion that allows us to compete at the highest level. A special coach like Dabo. I put Frank Howard and Danny Ford in that class also. Also, a special fan base. The pundits have always amazed at how we can put 80,000 folks in the stands. Also, for the most part of our fan base it has been, $1 down and a $1 per week support giving way beyond their means to support Clemson.

I question his analytical ability tbh. In his presser he said they would evaluate how teams attacked them all year in the offseason.
That’s great. Normal. But kinda late donchathink?
Maybe he’s an analytical guru and BVs success was partly because of Wes analyzing DURING the year and BV making adjustments. But BV was fine before Wes, heck he was better I’d say.

Need some fire on the defensive side of the ball.

Yep. The defensive guys need to go out there and kick ash. CBV inspired them to do this. It does not look like Wes is up to the task. He's a brainy guy, but the defense needs brawn.

I like your thinking. Wes has a great plan but maybe teaching 18 year Olds how to do it is not his strength. Poor angles and tackling has been a problem all year.

It's a terrible fit and has been since day 1. He is a data nerd.

No way is he going to inspire fire into anyone at the present or at any point in the future. Also those types are usually not fast decision makers in the heat of the moment. Two bad traits for an in game play caller. This one is a 100% bad call on Dabo.

It’s funny you mention moneyball. I picture awes as Jonah Hill in that movie.
