Disclaimers. 1. I think Dabo and Tom won the presser yesterday. 2. I think Tom won the interviews I've seen him to afterwards. 3. I think Tom is a great hire and will do a great job as DC, seeing a significant improvement this year.
Now, with that said, I think there is very little correlation between winning the presser and winning on the field.
You can win the presser and be a horrible coach. You can give a horrible press conference and be a great coach. You can be great at both. You can be horrible at both.
Wes Goodwin did not give a good press conference or interview, ever. And, he was not successful on the field. But, I also remember Mickey Andrews at FSU. He was horrible in front of a mike. If he had been a better speaker, either in a presser or 1-1, he probably would have been a head coach. (One guy close to the situation at FSU told me this 30 years ago, "Houston was ready to hire him. Flew him out for a final interview to just work out the details and he was so bad in the interview, they changed their minds." But, he was one of the best DCDs in the history of NCAA.
On the other hand, Tommy Bowden knocked it out of the park on his initial presser at Clemson. Few would say his on field performance was even close to that.
On the other hand, who would say Bill Belichick gives a good presser.
Throughout the years, it's been my experience that, while I enjoy a coach who is great in front of a mike, that has nothing to do with how great he will be on game day.
I'm sure y'all could give examples of coaches who were great at the presser and flopped on the field, or were great on the field but you shuddered every time they stepped up to a mic.

Danny Ford struggle early on with the microphone; however, his on-the-field voice was loud and clear!

Another possibility is winning the presser, being a great coach but factors outside your control influence limits the production of your group. Example, Riley’s first year O was not great.

You have hit 100%. Danny Ford was a great example. Kids loved him and he was a great coach but he was not good in front of the mike.

Mickey was a good DC but he also had some great Criminole players...wasn't hard to look good with them.

Same holds true for Bud Foster at VA Tech. I always thought Mickey and Bud recognized what they loved and did best, and stuck with it. I just wish BV had been cut out of that mold.

I could tell you stories about how his players absolutely loved him. Just like Venables kids would run through a wall for him.
That's part of being a great coach. Getting great players and then convincing them to get better every day.
Andrews was asked, "Who is the best athlete you have ever coached?" Without hesitation he said, "Deion Sanders."
Then he was asked, "Who was the hardest worker you ever coached?" Without hesitation he said, "That's easy, Deion Sanders."

Yes, I have seen people get too excited about a press conference.

Dabo is the GOAT, imo, both on and off the field.***
