Will Dabo just give up coaching at college level?

1

Oct 9, 2023, 4:46 PM

Dabo has said often over the years that when college sports become professionalized, he would give it up. With NIL, we are one step away, if not already there. He is so committed to his model re recruit and develop that he likely would not change course and begin to use the portal the way others do. We have seen the last few years, if we do not recruit generational talent, we do not develop it so the combination has now caught up to us. So....will Dabo simply walk away and say the game and expectations have changed to a point he can't align with it any longer? As an alum, I love what Dabo has done for the program and put us on the map. But I also want us to adapt to remain relevant and I just don't see him playing the NIL game the way the competitors are or the transfer portal the way they do. I would not be surprised that within 5 years he doesn't simply hang it up and walk away from the game.

Nah, he’s not giving up $12 million a year.

No....

he's not walking away from the 2nd highest paid college coaching job in America, ESPECIALLY when he knows he doesn't HAVE TO CHANGE........he can keep doing what he's doing the "DABO WAY" and the fans are good with that.

Tldr but if I were him, with those accomplishments and wealth, I might be less motivated in my current role and be more inclined to look for other professional opportunities.

Luckily, I’m not him and if he felt like I feel he wouldn’t be the person that has accomplished so much.

So he could easily give up college coaching but something tells me he’s not going anywhere and the best is yet to come. Patience

I think if he doesn't get it turned around in the next couple of seasons he would definitely be fielding other calls and offers. He has a great legacy and he won't want it to end on a bad note as he gets longer into his career.

Probably not, but I do believe he cares about the program and does not want to see it decline.

The portal is overrated and promotes selfishness.

The difference now is it’s legal to pay the players, although it’s been going on forever. What is really hurting football is that you no longer have to sit out a year. It’s created a financial free agency that at some point will have pure greed take over. Greed taints everything. That’s the real catalyst. “Come play for us and we’ll give you a million dollars.” “Forget about that team you’re on.”
At some point greed between the players will take over. “Hey, since you’re the star QB and you don’t shine without me as your offensive lineman, I just might let that defender get by me and plaster you behind the line unless you share some of your NIL money with me.” It’s bound to happen and the SEC is where it will start. They are the original gangsters of college football.

So, schools are paying players to play now? Do tell.

That is very specifically what he was talking about…

IMHO Dabo loves the limelight, he loves to help others, he loves to call the shots, he loves God and the soap box to reach others with his message, and he loves the big paycheck he's earned to share with his family, friends and the needy.

At some point, Coach will believe the costs outweigh the benefits, but we're a long way from that time.

I could also see him waiting to see how the next major realignment takes shape and what that means for Clemson. He already said it was coming so you know he is thinking about it.

he said all of that when 5 million a year was considered outrageous for a head coach in a short amount of time his salary has increased 120% to 11 million. I do think dabo is a genuine but remember this,

mammon is not simply a term for money, but of a spirit or demon/god it is an entity that attatches itself to an ideal (wealth) everyone knows money and wealth affords you the ability to bypass many of lifes hard realities by insulating yourself in a nice neighborhood, school, part of town etc. It also is a way many people get there self esteem or self worth from, hyper aware of how others view there image.

but in the end although there is certainly nothing wrong with earning a large amount of money, you and he will be tested you can't dance around some of these issues that will be pressed in the coming years, and unemployment will be the price for the wrong opinion.

I would not be surprised. If Dabo wanted to coach pro ball we would have jumped, or tried, to the NFL.
"College" football is now more professional than the NFL. The NFL has salary caps. "College" has none. The NFL has restrictions on free agency. "College" has none.

Coach Swinney has always said, it is about building young

1

Oct 9, 2023, 5:27 PM

men for him. Until they screw up the system so badly that he can't do that anymore, he will still be here. NIL is just one more thing to navigate, and he has already put the things in place to do that.

Even the Protal, when HE deems it necessary, will be used. But, he is not going to allow the Tigernet Coaches Association to make that call.

HE is dead wrong about using the portal to help your team. Literally anything would have helped at WR. Anywhere on offense. That Louisville throttling of ND was it for me. I guess literally everyone can use it with success besides Dabo.

Tyler Brown was our last WR signee and 3rd-lowest rated recruit of the '23 class.

He would not be a Tiger today, and likely the next three years on top of that, if Dabo did it your way.

Who else from the WR room should we have cut for a protaler?

Re: Will Dabo just give up coaching at college level?

Oct 9, 2023, 6:45 PM

Dabo would be out of his mind to leave Clemson and go to the pros. He has all the money he will ever need, but NFL coaches don't make what he makes and the cost of living in cities is way more than at Clemson. He also has a huge amount of control here and because NFL teams have owners and GMs, he would not have the freedom and control he has now.

Would Dabo just retire, maybe but he still enjoys coaching. Time will tell.

Re: Will Dabo just give up coaching at college level?

Oct 9, 2023, 10:40 PM

I don't think he needs to give up totally on his stance on NIL and the transfer portal. He just needs to get rid of the "Friends and Family Plan" when it comes to positional coaching hires. Nick Eason and Mike Reed are examples of what should be the standard for his staff. Both played NFL and have a proven track record of recruiting top talent and developing it to play in the NFL. The dream of playing in the NFL is still a major selling point in attracting top talent. You can't walk in a top recruits house and the highlight of your resume' is I played with or for Dabo.
