Wide receiver development

If Tyler Grisham’s group does not produce this year then it’s time for a change.

I've been as critical of him as any coach.

However, I do think the group needs to stay healthy for a full season.

The amount of injuries we've had the last 3 season have been borderline absurd. Hard to get production when you're rolling out the 2's, 3's and 4's most of the time,

I agree and relate to this comment 100%.
Been very critical of Grisham - "but is it fair given the # of walking wounded the Tigers have had at his position group"?

I don't think so.

We have to stay healthy at WR.
Then; as stated above - we can assess the job he is doing fairly.

I do agree we need to stay healthy. And it’s hard to put all the fault on wide receivers with some of our quarterback play. But Ngata and Ladson were highly rated players. Those 2 not panning out really hurt. Then Collins getting injured every year. Same as Randall and Stellato. It’s just been a weird 4 seasons at receiver.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ngata and Ladson also had injury issues to contend with

While it does seem like the wide receivers have had bad luck, excessive injuries around a locker room has a lot to do with training and attitude. I’ve always found it interesting that winning teams ive played on, almost no one sits out injured, and then losing team I’ve played on, people start dropping like flies once you start struggling

Jimmy's and Joe's not x's and o's

I have never liked that hire, but if he brings in a Wesco and Moore every class, that's all that matters.

Exactly! If he is 100% responsible for bringing in the likes of Wesco, Moore, Randall, A.Will he needs a little runway to work with.

People can't; but somehow are missing this: "it doesn't matter how much talent or skill a player has - if they are unavailable they can't help your football team"! How is that on the coach?

Now, with that said. I wasn't a fan of the hire either. But, I do think you have to acknowledge the fact the WR room over the last few seasons have been devastated with injury.

Ngata - stayed hurt.
Williams - hurt most of last season.
Randall - compared to S. Watkins - but then had ACL and hasn't fully been the same.
Frank Ladson - stayed hurt.
Stallato - stayed banged up.
Beaux Collins - frequently on the trainers table and unavailble.
Dacari Collins - hurt all the time.
And, I know I am missing some.

You're 100% right with that list.

if we can't get our #1's to stay healthy, then everything else is kaput.

With that said, I have seen enough of my own eyes that our receivers are not being held to same standard when it comes to blocking that Jeff Scott demanded. Go back watch old games an see all of our guys trying to block someone when a WR or QB took off running. I have not seen than at nearly the same level the last 3 seasons.

.... maybe they were scared they were gonna get hurt.

Thus is foolish to claim they weren't held to the same stsndard. For some reason, people can't accept the truth. They just weren't that talented.

I really like Randall and hate that his injuries have hampered/impacted his prformance to date but he was definitely coming "on" towards the end of last season. However, I can't see how anyone compared him to Sammy Watkins during his recruitment.

Injuries and inability to play have been a monkey on this program’s back for several seasons now. Not just the WR room. We all joke about the “Fire Batson” thing but that’s another part of the coaching staff that needs some serious evaluation.

Also, my concern with Grisham is that he can’t develop. I’m hoping this season with healthy WRs and a hopefully more mature/ developed QB and OL, he is able to show he is qualified for his job.

Since Dabo, Clemson has had a lot of really good WRs to come through our program, but a really good known named WR coach could keep elite receivers at Clemson every recruiting class!!!

I think that Grisham can help an elite receiver maintain what development they had coming in, but I don't think he is a good enough coach to help them to get better. Coaching WRs is a position that young coaches need a lot of time working with an experience WR coach...

That’s not a quarterback thing, nor a lack of talent thing- it’s mostly an effort and “want to” thing. I’ve always thought as a group they never respected Grisham, or feared him in the coaching sense of the word. Too much buddy-buddy, more like he’s one of them and not their coach. A very bad hire that seems to be the gift that keeps on giving.

Coach Grisham is one of the nicest people I know. He's a strong Believer.

I agree with some of the posters: I feel like we've just had too many misses at critical positions over the last several years. WR/QB are the most glaring.

But I have loved seeing a lot of our 3*s and below out punch their weight class.

- Tyler Brown was my fave player to watch last year. All Heart.
- Cole Turner has flashed some major fire
- Will Taylor was extremely promising pre injury/baseball

Probably missing someone but we've had some bright spots in these 8-4/9-4 times

With all the injuries at one position, I believe if I was the HC, I would be looking at "Why"? If other teams are not having all those injuries , why is my team having them. Fix that and you fix part of your wide receiver problem. Ignore that, and you will not fix the problem.

In my opinion lack of adequate coaching causes injuries. I am not talking about strength and conditioning but the confidence to play at full speed. Being timid causes injuries.

Watch out - many tnet posters get upset when you suggest "it's anything other than Bad Luck"!

I stop. I mean, Full stop of suggesting what should be done. Who should be gone. Any of that.

But, as you said so well, "you have to at some point go, why do we have so many injuries to our skill players"! OL/DL/Specialist backers and RB have all been pretty decent in terms of health. But, DB and WR has been another story.

"I will only say, I have full confidence the question was asked. Things and processes were evaluated for possible Root Causes"!

Get Wesco and Moore involved early and often. Nothing against the other guys but they have not done enough to have a lock on the position. The WR group should be a completely open competition.

If I am a WR recruit I am looking at how a program develops the position and how successful they are putting guys in the league. Grisham has to turn the corner on this to recruit top talent. He has flailed in this regard so far.

If it was just based on performance, he should've been gone last year but I think Dabo was hesitant because it could've cost us some recruits. If things do go well this season, he will most likely be terminated
