Why have our tight end passes virtually disappeared since

Oct 20, 2019, 9:06 PM

Leggett left? The guys are talented there, maybe not on Leggett's level, but still talented. It's like it is non-existent anymore. Believe me, I am not complaining about 22 straight but it seems as if the other teams had one more passing threat to be worried about it might open things up a little bit more. Maybe I am not able to see all the receivers during the plays and don't realize they are out there but Leggett was often the #1 target on a lot of plays, not the last resort like many of our options seem to be these days.

It is not just tight end passes

Oct 20, 2019, 9:10 PM

We are not using the middle of the field . We were so spoiled with Renfro and Legget

I just did a horrible thing and while watching some football replays on Youtube saw a recap of Conner Shaw with his 21 out of 22 against Missouri with virtually every pass 7 yards or less on crossing routes, short dumps, screens, and tight end dumps. Absolutley destroyed them and all safe passes letting the WR athletes do the work. Actually a very impressive video for a Coot.

That’s all Fran Tarkenton did his entire career. The first of the short pass specialists, I believe.

I'm old, but it seemed like 2 of our TD's at Louisville were over the middle.

The tight ends are used much more for run blocking and pass protection. The coaches obviously feel there are plenty of options out there.

I know that they know best what to do with the talent, but like ESSO said above, it doesn't seem like we are using the middle of the field as much as in the past and the tight end could give a block and release to the middle and maybe give that outlet when they are double covering Ross and Higgins.

I actually wonder if they are avoiding using the TE until championship/bowl season so that its a new facet of game too late to study and prep for. And Galloway would be back so....

So you want to take a kid who has not played a snap in over a year and suddenly run him out on the field during the championship playoffs.

Okay.

The fact that this surprises you actually proves my point - no one would plan for that. And Dabo said that he is has been engaged and practicing like he's playing each game. Get closer to Dec, I bet he gets even more engaged.

Not worried about our opponents being surprised that Galloway plays. They would quickly adjust. I just wonder how effective Galloway would be after not playing for a year. I fear he might me just a tad rusty as far as route running, timing, blocking, etc..

Has Galloway not been practicing every day . If so , then there's no way he should be rusty .

Re: Why has our tight end passes virtually disappeared since

Yes, he’s practicing. He’s also running with the scout team. Don’t let all the gloom & doom around here coupled with the lack of inside team information get you worried. Our offense is just fine & the defense is the best in the country. If they keep winning, Clemson will be in the playoff & will be the best team of the four again

But why recruit Galloway and Lay only to hide them all year waiting to surprise the opponent in the playoffs? It seems like getting experience and practice in game day situations would be beneficial at that time. We didn't hide Leggett all year long 3 years ago.

We were using Galloway some. Lay is raw right now. Chalk is a below average receiver, he cannot reach or jump for a pass, it must be perfect, and even then he drops it half the time.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it was nice to see Davis Allen catch his 2nd rec. yesterday

Oct 20, 2019, 10:26 PM

Kid looks the part at 6'6", 240-250lbs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because we don’t have a TE who can block and get

Oct 20, 2019, 9:16 PM

Open down field. Our TE recruiting has been the weakest position on the team and hopefully it gets better going forward. Brandon Galloway will be available in the playoffs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lay is a 4 star.***

Oct 20, 2019, 10:30 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes he is and the only one at the position.

Oct 21, 2019, 3:13 AM

Look at every other position on the team and we have several 4 star and at least one 5 star. I think it’s obvious that it’s the least talent position on the team.

Re: Why has our tight end passes virtually disappeared since

Oct 20, 2019, 9:18 PM

I have wondered this many times! The thing is you have to at least target them. It seems like you make it easy for defenses if you only ever pass to the boundary or the field. Just play quarters coverage and make the QB fit it into tight windows.
If I had a say(which I don't and would not want to get in the way of our multiple championship coaches). I would beat up the middle of the field with the play calling. Work the middle specifically and deliberate.
D. Overton is a legit 6'5 and is always open even if covered. Make the defense get a P.I. or give up the toss to Overton. Same with D. Allen or J. Lay both 6'6 and good hands. They aren't the best blockers in the world from what I gather - but as far as pass catching TE I think they can more than get it done. Again - I trust our coaches and believe in what they have going on. Just like you said, "something you wonder about out loud"!

The only thing that Clemson's coaches have done to make it easy for opposing defenses, as far as I can tell, is take out the first team players in the third quarter. If Dabo keeps TL, Travis, Tee and Justyn in there the whole game, the Tigers would be averaging 45-50 point a game. Guess we'll just have to be satisfied with 40-12 nail biters.

Because JC Chalk is slow/has below average hands & is a little short

Oct 20, 2019, 10:49 PM

for a catching Tight End (no pun intended) Braden Galloway would be similar to Leggett if eligible. It irritates me that we try to force passes to Chalk. He’s not a viable TE as far as being a threat catching the ball

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For relaxing times, make it Suntory time

TL missed a TD pass to a wide open Chalk on Saturday.

Oct 20, 2019, 11:15 PM

Calk caught a TD pass earlier this year but the play was negated due to a penalty on the OL.

Re: TL missed a TD pass to a wide open Chalk on Saturday.

Oct 21, 2019, 6:10 AM

And Deshaun used to “miss” Leggett by the same amount at times. Difference is Leggett was 6’5”, could elevate, and could make a tough catch. Chalk is much shorter, can’t elevate, and has below average hands. That is the issue more than a pass that was 2 feet higher than perfect.

Using the TE to help protect. RB can not handle the bliss of big safety or linebacker coming off the edge.

Re: Why have our tight end passes virtually disappeared since

Because we havent had a TE like Leggett since Leggett. Next year you will see much more TE use.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And by "next year" you mean

Oct 21, 2019, 8:09 AM

January in New Orleans I assume - Galloway will be back.

Re: Why have our tight end passes virtually disappeared since

Oct 21, 2019, 8:02 AM

I seem to recall we throw to TE a few times per game, and at least one or two passes are dropped per game or TL overthrows. And for some reason TE passes are a play where we get penalized a lot with illegal shift or holding negating successful passes.
