Fact is Brent Venables defenses' gave up a lot of points in big games over the years...
Difference is we had an offense capable of outscoring people.

Go back and watch some games against top teams. Pay attention to the run defense and tackling. Maybe that will help you understand.

Seems like the coot game was his downfall but Illinois held them to the same amount of points they just were able to score 21 which isn't a lot.
Old Dominion scored more points on them than we did.

We gave up 431 yards to the Coots, lost the game on the same repetitive play after pulling the player who was doing the best at stopping it out of the game for the 4th quarter.
We gave up 8000 rushing yards to the Citadel.
Texas ran the same play against us for 4 hours, we couldn't stop it.
Awful blown leads against Pitt and SMU.
Clear lack of intensity and aggression.

I also have concerns about the offense. Seems like most of the focus is being put on the defense when that wasn’t 100% of the problem.

They held him to 17 yds rushing which is where he hurt us plus, our defensive stats/ranking are really bad. With the talent we have, that is unacceptable.

gave up over 1000 yds rushing in the last 4 games...The citadel rushed for 288...gave up a huge lead to smu in the acc championship game...BV defenses never looked that bad

Our talent was ranked pre-season 5th best in the country and most of that was on D.

Wes had zero experience as even a position coach, but Dabo made him DC. Insane.
It’s no wonder the talent has declined under this coaching staff.

That's a fact, he had no clue of how to stop it. Something that I haven't yet seen mentioned and it should have, so I'll bring it up. Mickey Conn was the Co DC to Goodwin and Mickey has a ton more coaching experience than Goodwin, and I somehow believe that Dabo done that so he could help Goodwin when his lack of experience was getting the best of him.
Was it that Goodwin felt that his smarts was so far over the top of Mickey's smarts that he wouldn't pay him any attention. Was it bc Mickey had some jealousy bc Goodwin was over him and he would never give Goodwin any straight answers when Goodwin needed Mickey's advice bc of his lack of experience.
Something went on there with those two that none of us actually know about, and my opinion is that it was jealousy, and that Goodwin made 1/2 mil more than Mickey and Mickey and he made up his mind if Goodwin was worth 1/2 mil more than him, he wasn't offering or giving any advice to Goodwin.
Bet the farm that those two relationships were strained a lot more than anybody is saying. Mickey was the Co Coordinator, and if one is pushed out, so should the other bc that was a shared job and neither done a good job...

Because Goodwin took over a very talented Defense and had us outside of the top 25 two out of the three years. We were like outside of the top 50 this year. Thats unacceptable with the talent we have.

That's wishful thinking, speculation. It's just as likely that Venables called with an offer he couldn't refuse.
Somehow since many of Tnet's outspoken members believe that Wes was the problem they assume he should be fired so upon learning he won't be here next season they assume he was fired. Indeed.
10 wins, an ACC championship and playoff seed and they are ready to fire everyone and start from scratch. Where angels fear to thread man rushes in.

especially on the offensive side. That lull at the end of the 3rd quarter and most of the 4th quarter was completely ridiculous. The final score should have been 35-14.

I think that it was more like Dabo advised him to look for employment elsewhere bc he wasn't going to have his job stressed bc his defense was kind of bad throughout the entire season when playing a team with a heartbeat, or by saying something meant the same thing!!!

As long as Dabo has had a mouthpiece he has proclaimed that he wants to stop the run.Passing/catching takes skill; any 3rd grader can run the football. If you can’t stop the basic play you will not win.
It sometimes took BV defenses halfway into the 2nd quarter—Bo Scarborough says hi—but eventually he got the run stopped. Remember Bama’s 7 straight 3-n-outs in the second half of the Natty? And what broke the string? A QB scramble.
Under BV our DBs knew how to tackle, because sometimes we ended up committing 9 to stopping the run.
Wes seemed incapable of making significant adjustments at halftime.
Our backups seemed woefully unprepared for game conditions.
We lacked a significant pass rush.
Since Wes had never been a position coach his IQ didn’t matter except in the big picture, and his big picture cost us the lead multiple times. You can’t teach what you’ve never learned; besides, the goal isn’t really to teach a player better technique or skills, it’s to help him develop his own motor so he is perpetually improving. I never played for him, but he didn’t make me want to improve just by listening to him like BV did.

Thinking same thing, Mickey had way more coaching experience over Goodwin, but he was made the Co-Coordinator under Goodwin, and I personally believe that cause a ton of friction between those two especially with Goodwin making a half mil more a year that the man with 10 times more coaching experience and he had been at Clemson I think longer than Goodwin...

True we would give up a big play about every game under BV, but that happen when the opposing OC made a good guess for when BV was about to blitz the H$LL of their QB, but BV was more successful with his defense at Clemson than most other teams in the country. There is no way people can keep comparing what BV did or didn't do at times and try to use it to make him out to be an average DC bc the truth is that he was one of the top 5 DC's in the country year after year, and it was bc of his defense that we have added two more National Championship Trophies to our trophy case, and it was mainly bc of his defenses that we played 4 NCG'S...
The word has been most of the time that defenses win games and championships, but I don't see it like that. I believe that top offenses and average defenses or the other way around is what wins championship games. Just ask Nick Saban, his defenses have won an awful lot of games, or ask Steve Spurrier, his offenses won an awful lot of games, and both have their names written as championship coaches...
Nick Saban stopped offenses, and Steve Spurrier ran over defenses!!!

Worst rushing defense since 1975 when we were 2-9. I was a student at Clemson then. We were bad. The 56-20 loss to a running QB at SCAR, Jeff Grantz, was eerily similar to our inability to stop Sellers this year. Red Parker lasted one more year at Clemson, but even a win over SCAR in 1976 was not enough to save his job.

Because Dabo needs another scapegoat...DJU was Dabos fault...2 poor OCs and a bad DC is Dabos fault...poor OL coach replace them and make a good excuse...the CEO needs to focus...playing Brown at MLB was not the DCs fault...MLBs fill holes and make tackles there, not 10 yes downfield...Wes will do well somewhere else...our HC/CEO is still one of the best in the business...He ain't GOD!

There is no way this dude is serious. Nobody that’s a true Clemson fan can be that stupid.
If you watched Clemson at all this year and didn’t see our defense getting progressively worse then you know absolutely nothing about football and you’re just the average fan.
And that’s totally ok but don’t come on a message board and ask a stupid question like that.
It’s clear to anyone who knows anything about this game that we needed a change and immediately.
Whether he was fired or left on his own is irrelevant. He’s gone and that’s what’s most important. Watch how different our defense looks next year.
