Why does Clemson/Dabo get disproportionate heat vs USC (So-Cal)?

Just a thought exercise. When the Tigers lost to UGA, the national media was quick to bury Dabo and the Tigers. We turned things around and started playing better then lost to UL and suddenly it’s the death of the program. It’s all over. Dabo and his 2 national championships suck. He’s out of touch, won’t use portal, doesn’t tamper…etc etc.
Meanwhile, Lincoln Riley at USC is 4-5, 0-3 in CFP…never won anything of note. Where’s the Dabo-like scrutiny? Where’s Finebum burying Riley and USC as a program? How about Oklahoma? Coach V is struggling mightily. You don’t read about Oklahoma being dead and buried as a program. These programs have all the “advantages” and are failing. Is it just me or does it seem like another case of the media building heroes only to tear them down? Seems like programs that are allegedly doing all the things you’re supposed to do and failing should be held to an even higher standard.

I suspect Riley at USC is getting a whole lot of heat within that fan base and with sports talking heads in that part of the country. I don't listen to Finebaum so I have little knowledge of what he's spouting...

He has a philosophy that he believes in and so called experts believes things cannot be done but one way. People love to pile on when things go a certain way and if things were done the experts way then there would be no issues. I believe Dabo believes in rewarding the guys that have bought in, but as he has stated numerous times when he feels he needs to use the portal he will. If folks believe Clemson will get into a bidding war over a player that may be here a year then I believe they will be disappointed. Not his philosophy and wants to be able to develop players coming out of high school. Just my 2 cents and thers will chime in with theirs.

Exactly, the poster answered his own question with this line.
“ Meanwhile, Lincoln Riley…never won anything of note.”

Ok Sterling, if the answer is the Portal, why are so called traditional powers like USC, Michigan or Oklahoma not in the Top 25? Finding players in the Portal guarantees absolutely nothing.

It isn't JUST the portal...

We apparently are using NIL in a way no other team does and it isn't working
We aren't using the portal like elite programs to fill gaps and replace numbers... ESPECIALLY considering how small our recruiting classes are
Out coaching hires since the title run has been largely questionable - especially if BEST is STANDARD

Dabo’s personality, core beliefs & philosophy as a coach & as a person lie outside the current culture. For the pundits to acknowledge his past and potential success would be for them to renounce their own commitment to that. So he gets no slack whatsoever. Likewise neither do many of the rest of us who support and agree with Dabo and his approach.
It’s not so hard for us to understand really, just difficult to accept

Because Dabo won 2 titles and made 6 straight CFPs

As you said yourself, Riley hasn't won anything. And he is getting heat too.. I've heard quite a bit of it.
But Dabo is getting the heat because the expectations for him and his program are higher, and also because he's been very vocal about doing things against the grain. When you zig while the other 99% are zagging you are opening yourself up to scrutiny and an outsized portion of the credit or blame.

Finebaum just called for Riley to be fired and dragged him pretty good the other day. But Dabo gets more clicks than a lot of other coaches, so even if Finebaum absolutely loved Dabo the man, he would drag him over the coals as a coach because it drives traffic and generates clicks.

First thing that pops in my head is that Dabo wears his faith on his sleeve, which angers media, and he is not afraid to tell you EXACTLY how he feels about something. That angers the media too. They are then out to get him.

I dont always agree with your posts but this one I am 100% behind.
Its because as much as we like to laugh and nash our teeth about injury coach speak, we have a coach who has his opinions and when asked will share them without hesitation. And they don't always fit the mold of what we think a coach should say.

Money.
ESECPN is FULLY INVESTED in all things SEC & B1G. That’s where their money is. Anything that promotes either the SEC or the B1G or bathes them in a positive light, is played on a continuous loop 24/7/365. Anything detrimental to either the SEC or B1G is minimized or if at all possible, completely ignored or flat out lied about and denied. All of that helps promote the business that ESECPN has invested in.
Anything that works against either the SEC or B1G, thereby hurting or diminishing ESECPN’s monetary investment in those 2 conferences, gets blasted 24/7/365 on a continuous loop. That’s the ACC, the Big 12 and was the PAC12 before the B1G destroyed them. There is NO OTHER SCHOOL that more flies in the face of ESECPN’s propaganda than Clemson. All of Clemson’s accomplishments will be minimized, glossed over, ignored or lied about. Because that puts money in ESECPN’s bank accounts. Any failure by Clemson will be maximized, paraded, mocked and celebrated, for the same reason.
There is ONE EXCEPTION to all of this……NOTRE DAME. Notre Dame although not part of either the SEC or the B1G will receive the kid glove treatment, because there are 100 million Catholics in this country and most of them will watch and pull for Notre Dame. That’s the kind of money ESECPN can’t ignore.
ESECPN is NOT a news organization, is NOT a sports organization, is NOT an entertainment organization.
ESECPN is a MARKETING DEPARTMENT for the businesses that ESECPN has invested their money in. They sell what makes them money…..by any means necessary.

USC uses the portal and NIL, just like 99.2% of the non military FBS schools.
That doesn't make their methods stand out.
Clemson is a unicorn and can't help but stand out.

Riley is on the hot seat. You just don’t care to pay enough attention to what the media is saying about him. He also doesn’t have the expectations Dabo does. Of course Dabo will get more heat.

The real USC has not been relevant in nearly 20 years

and Riley was always a con-man....riding the Big12 of nothingness in which he won exactly nothing....USC thought they were getting something in Riley and he has proven to be just another guy they could have had for much cheaper.
Which brings me to G Riley and our Clemson Tigers.... Against any kind of competition or talent, the Clemson offense has been stagnant. NCSU/App St/Stanford are all bad teams, completely overwhelmed. But WF & Virginia battled for a long time before being overwhelmed and of course a Louisville team with not much defense to speak of kept our Tigers to 7 points through 3 quarters...and when the Tigers did score it was as if they were playing a juggernaut defense...slow, time-consuming, 3 yards and a cloud of dust style from the 1970's and 1980's...which is fine unless you are down 3 scores.
What is the Clemson offensive identity ?? Clemson ran 100+ plays and was held to a single TD for 3 quarters, it makes no sense. And FG team, well I prefer we just go for it on 4th down from now on.
