Why can't we cover the TE?

I only got to watch the 1st quarter the other night, but finally got around to watching the rest of the game tonight. Seems like 90% of the big plays we've given up over the last 2 seasons have been to the Tight End. I'm not a Defensive mastermind by any means, but it seems like we should have a plan for the TE.

Note the "fast Talented tight end"part. It's from our

aggressive play style. People love it when it works and it's the main reason we year in and year out have one of the best defense in the country but when there's an offensive line capable of keeping the QB safe enough to find a mismatch and a QB capable of not being rattled and finding the mismatch we give up yards to big fast tight ends that cannot be covered by a linebacker who a lot of times isn't even responsible for the tight end but due to a blown assignment or a defender being out of position we have to try to seal that hole with whoever is available and aware enough to recognize the hole before the opposing team is able to exploit it. South Carolina fits absolutely none of those categories. The O line is among the worst we will face and their tight end is below average in regards to tight ends we've had to deal with this season.

I noticed this as well. I believe that Dorial O'daniel is fast, quick, and athletic enough to run with any TE. I haven't really paid close attention to his cover skills though. But to me, he'd be the ideal guy to cover the TE compared to the rest of our linebackers

I agree with O'danial. It still baffles me why they haven't moved Boulware back to MLB and put Williams and O'danial outside. Why not just pull him out on obvious passing downs. I love the way the kid plays, but he's costed us a few points over the last 2 seasons.

He may have cost us some, but it is harder to quantify how many he has saved us conversely

I'm not knocking him at all. I think he's a great player that has a physicality that you look for in a Linebacker, but he just struggles against the pass.

lol what's given any of you the inclination that Dorian and Jalen are any better in coverage because in all honesty, they aren't. All three of our LBs are excellent in run stoppage between the tackles. Jalen and Dorian are the best sideline to sideline and Jalen can find a hole in a blitz better than all of them. Unfortunately, none are any good in coverage. Bj Goodson and Stephone Anthony excelled at coverage...but they obviously are no longer with us. This is why our front four or 3 given the scheme we are in, are so vital.

Honestly, I think it's a speed factor. O'danial is clearly faster than Boulware.

Oh well that's obvious. Like it was stated earlier by another poster, Dorian is run stopper. He too struggles in coverage and open field tackling. I love our Defemse and our players but I don't think I've ever been so ready for Lamar to step in

Boulware is moved out to Outside LB to help with weak side pressure/help Van Smith. He's mismatched against athletic tight ends because he's geared towards run stopping and QB pressure (obviously). He's not very fast, so man coverage exposes him a lot to that. Venables likes to bring a lot of people on blitzes, so that leaves the rest of coverage help to utilize man coverage a good deal of the time.
O'Daniel is best with coverage, but not so much in run stopping, unless it's option attack.
Pretty sure the next time someone tries to exploit the defense with tight end use is going into nickel formation. Jalen Williams, Korrin Wiggins, K'Von Wallace, and Ryan Carter will be used in coverage help.
Doesn't help by subbing out Boulware in obvious passing downs because other teams would recognize this, make necessary package substitutions/adjustments, and smart quarterbacks will audible to something else.

Kryptonite identified: http://rolltide.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=525 Clemson: Earned Offensive MVP honors for his career day against the Tigers ... finished with five catches for a career-high 208 yards and two touchdowns ... all five catches converted first downs while going for at least 15 yards ... hauled in a career-long 63 yard reception before being pushed out of bounds late in the fourth quarter ... his 208 yards were the most in a bowl game by any single player in Alabama history and were the most by any player in a national championship game. AND THEY ONLY WON BY 5.
On the flip...have you seen our te? He can fly. Aerial distances over 15 feet are nothing. 1st downs are a sure bet. Tds are certain. JL16 is the real deal. Bring on the tide...DW4 has the answer.
Go Tigers!
