Why can we not be competitive with

5

the money we are getting? Just asking the question!

How much more do we need to be competitive. How has the extra money made Vanderbilt more competitive. At what point is enough enough!

I agree. How nice do facilites need to get? etc - they are already unbelievably nice.

The problem now though is NIL - need more money to pay players.

Bingo. The schools no longer need money for their programs. They need it for payroll

That has nothing to do with the money we receive from conference affiliation.

It actually does. Conference affiliation money replaces booster money to got diverted to NIL. Moneybags donor is now funding NIL deals with 2/3rds of the money he used to donate to athletic association. L
Papers have to be shuffled, but the more money you have, the higher your team payroll can be.

That money won’t go towards NIL but it frees up boosters poor more money into collectives for NIL.

It’s harder to recruit in mid major conferences

Vandy is a poor comparison as they have other intangibles (like our basketball program) which limits success. The key for us is not more money but a comparable amount of money to other similar programs meaning programs who are capable of winning a national championship. While we are currently at a revenue disadvantage to the SEC, the gap is small enough where we can still be competitive thanks to IPTAY. But what happens if the gap is $50M per year? What would you think if we had offered Coach Riley $2M per year but Napier wanted him and offered $4M per year so we had to keep Coach Streeter as our OC?

Why is Vandy a poor comparison. IF you are correct that there are other intangibles, then it is the intangibles that make the difference and not necessarily the money. Clemson has the intangibles, including a great football tradition, that should mean more than money ...... as long as we have enough, which we do. Plus coaches salaries are not paid for, in most part, from revenue from conference revenues.

Because Vandy is not a sports school, they are a school which fields sports teams. They don't do the things needed to compete at the highest levels in key sports. I agree there are a ton of variables to having a top tier team but even if you take care of all the other variables without competitive funding there is no way to have sustained success. Clemson is already at a disadvantage in terms of revenue based on school size and a lack of big money donors. If you look at the revenue brought in by UGA or Ohio St it is much more than Clemson. So there is no way to overcome the built in advantage of the large state schools plus a $50M deficit in TV rights.

This is a business now and you have to keep up with the other payrolls in the market to get the top recruits....I saw this coming and I hate that we are here.

We already spend the second highest amount of money on recruiting, yet there are dozens of other schools with more revenue from conference affiliation, so it appears that is not a problem.

is opportunity cost.

Refusing a promotion because you like your job cost you the opportunity to make more money.

Don't get me wrong ...... I hope we are able to keep up money-wise with the other institutions but am playing devil's advocate. I'm just curious of how much more money do we need and how we will spend it. I would love to be able to cut my IPTAY donation in half because we are flush with cash ....... but that ain't going to happen ..... regardless of how much money we take in.

After reading several really good articles about how money is spent for college athletics, it is now apparent to me that the more you bring in, from whatever sources, the better chance you have to compete. And I guess the easiest way to raise that money is from a conference that pays each school a bunch more money. However, it is a zero sum game, so for every winner, there is going to be a loser ...... which of course means that the Coots will probably always be a loser. :)

Thanks guys for you enlightenment!

I also look at it as having the opportunity to have all around great athletics not just football. The football budget is huge no doubt and it would be nice to be able to fund it easily without the possibility of taking away from our other programs.
