Spring battles: Who emerges at quarterback?
Deshaun Watson is the unquestioned starter as Clemson's quarterback, but there will be a fierce battle for the backup quarterback spot. Who can make the biggest impression on the coaches before the heralded Zerrick Cooper arrives this summer? Full Story » |

Whoever runs the scout team could start at USC!!

WE TOO DEEP!!!! Actually, I'm a little concerned that we have too much talent in one critical position and somebody is going to end up either transferring (Israel) or not end up signing. It would seem that Schussler is just destined to clipboard carrying. I wonder if Bryant can get his throwing up to par with the talent we have at receiver as his forte is running--insert plug for a move to WR here?! Cooper is reported to be a Watson prototype in his skillset, while Johnson & Brice are more in the Pro Pocket mold, which could lend itself to the running game, which is loaded as well.
All in all, it's a full house of talent in TigerTown!!!

Not at QB we're not...not yet, anyhow.
I'm not sold yet we can win with Kelly Bryant at QB. Love his wheels, think his passing was well below par as a freshman. If he improves we're golden...if we're not, potential problem.
Not sold we can win with Schuessler for ANY length of time. Great practice guy, might be a career #3.
Know nothing about Israel other than small, with a so-so, fairly weak arm. Can he even get past Schuessler?
Zerrick Cooper may be our actual #2. As a true freshman. He won't be here until Fall. The other two won't be along until 2017. We'll have a new president before those guys are on campus.
That is not the definition of "deep"...not yet, anyhow.
We could really, really use Bryant to step up.

Well said, I may be in the minority, but I think the ball goes from Watdon to Cooper. I am pulling for Bryant, as a local guy, but I see him more as a guy who will play often- just not s starter. But, what do I know?
Go Tigers!

Dabo has shown in the past that he will stick with the experience i.e. Stoudt. There is a positive side to this stubbornness that I think teaches the team work ethic. Go Tigers!

Kelly Bryant could help the team at several positions ...

He's the true wild card in the QB situation at Clemson.
If he blooms as a passing threat, he may very well be the Clemson QB of the future. If not, he is athletic enough to play a variety of positions down the road.
While I would hesitate to sell Tucker Israel short this early, I could see him eventually transferring for the sake of playing tim. And it's not too had to visualize Schuessler simply sticking around keep his scholarship and to provide depth, graduate, and move on.
Meanwhile, I really can't see any reason why Kelly Bryant (if necessary) couldn't transition to another position the way that numerous athletic Tiger QBs in the past have done.
The list is long: Charlie Waters, Ricky Gilstrap, Terrance Mack, Patrick Sapp, Dexter McCleon, Andy Headen ... etc. Kelly Bryant has a great future at Clemson regardless of whether he wins the QB sweepstakes.
The issue is, how soon does Bryant either make a solid case for his ability to lead the team as the starting QB, or see that his long term future actually lies at another position? Hopefully it can happen this coming season ... and the earlier the better.
Just how immediately ready Zerrick Cooper is to fight for the 2nd string job may hasten the process.

Actually quacking tiger said that Cooper isn't nearly the athletic runner that Johnson nor Brice is. He thinks Zerrick is more of a pocket passer with a live arm.

Dunno where QT got that idea.
Cooper reminds me so much of Deshaun Watson it's a little scary. Cooper is not a pure pocket passer; he very much can run the read-option and extend plays with his feet.
It's not...remotely hard to see, actually. Watch his HUDL film...and remember, you are NOT watching Deshaun Watson. It's not always easy to remember; your eye will try to tell you something different at times. Actually I think Cooper is a couple inches taller, and maybe a little slower, but he's still got more than enough athleticism and mobility to get out of trouble and extend plays...and exactly like Watson, that's how he uses it, to extend plays, while keeping his eyes downfield.

lot like Watson! I know it's just high school but he does just as good a job at keeping his eyes downfield when moving as Watson does if not better and I didn't think that was possible! Our future looks bright! Go Tigers!

I think Israel is the Wild Card in all this. He has had a year to digest Streeters teachings and seems a quick study. I think his arm is more than adequate for all the throws he needs to make. I see him as being a really nice timing/ rythm passer who throws a nice ball and hits guys in stride. He's also fairly quick and mobile. Let's be honest, he didn't come to us as a last minute take that played 2A in Wyoming. Kid broke records at the highest levels in Florida. That is nothing to sneeze at, and I am salivating to see what he can do.

Relegated is the word you were looking for.

That would not shock me. Considering some of the cases Muschamp has already been involved with, it's abundantly obvious that Muschamp is unafraid to stick his hands down in the muck. He doesn't care diddly what the "optics" of the situation look like; he just wants to win.
If he's got to steal Bobby Petrino's mojo for the All-Incarcerated All-Stars, that's just what he'll do.
I think he's already very well aware nobody at South Carolina will remotely stand up to him no matter how many chick-punchers he allows on campus. Heck, a few years back, the Lindsey twins were basically standing on Columbia street corners passing random passers-by in the face and nobody at the school much minded; they're fine with that stuff there.

And of course, I responded to, and highlighted, the wrong post.
That would be quotational fail.
I will be relinquished to the writing bench now.

It should be a lot of fun to see these guys develop without the team desperately needing their services (hopefully) and I'm just amazed how DW4 made a great Bama defense look lost!
