Who needs it more in the opener? I think it is Georgia and here is why..

I suspect I am in the minority here, but I think this is a MUST WIN for Georgia.

Just being real here.

If Georgia were to lose the Clemson game I honestly don’t think they make the playoffs.

Schedule:

At top 4 Alabama

At top 3 Texas

At top 7 Mississippi

NOT TO MENTION Tennessee, Florida, Auburn

When you play 3 top 7 teams ON THE ROAD that is a problem. I don’t care how good you are. Then, the other solid teams on the schedule.

Three top 7 teams ON THE ROAD.

Not counting Clemson, I see 2 losses. Being honest.

Clemson is a top 12 or better team. Maybe a top 8 team. Too many people discounting Clemson. Coming off a 5 game winning streak. I think Clemson has a major chip on their should and are quietly but confidently looking at this game with Georgia as a way to show they are back.

Clemson has been written off and been told they don’t belong with Georgia or the elite teams. That does not sit well. I think Clemson has a real chip on their shoulder and are looking forward to the game majorly.

What better way to announce and show they are back than to beat the #1 ranked team in the country to open the season?

Ok, if Clemson loses to Georgia they can run the table in the ACC and win the ACC and be a top 4 seed. Reality. They don’t NEED to beat Georgia.

Georgia in a different situation. And, quite honestly, I don’t see how Georgia will make the playoffs if they lose the opener to you guys.

Just my honest thoughts and curious what you guys think?

Well there are 12 teams now and they would have been in. They also lost their most important player and there were only 4 options. They didn't deserve to be there.

It certainly is Georgia. If Clemson loses, it is to the best team on Earth. If Georgia loses to Clemson, it is to that team none of the polls are showing respect and to a coach that some big-earred ESPN guy says is washed up.

No, if we lost to Georgia (and they’re certainly favored by double digits) and then ran the table, we would be in the CFB playoff. If we then lost to FSU and NC State and not make the ACC Championship, we’d be out for sure. We could get in with 2 loses AND an ACC Championship.

Georgia is in the same position that Clemson was in five years ago. They are expected to win it all, so anything less is disappointing. Plus, the SEC is a tough conference with a lot of teams. All the talking heads have invested a lot in pumping up Georgia, so when Georgia finally (at some point) goes back to being normal, the media will drop them like a hot potato. That's a lot of pressure. Clemson can lose to Georgia and still make the playoff by winning the ACC, which is a much easier path.

I personally think this is a very important game for Dabo and could determine the season early due to the negative from the media that will come with a loss.

BDog, that is a very fair and honest take. That said I feel that Bama will end up with at least 2 losses in the regular season and Texas even with a Charmin schedule outside of Jawga and Meatchicken will have two losses. I'd say more bur seriously, their schedule is as creamy of a cream puff as I have ever seen. It's embarrassing imo. All they needed to make it easier was to replace Yall with U of SC and I'd ask if they were in the SWAC.

Honest take to be sure. Here's the difference as I see it. Clemson will be playing the game to win it. Georgia, based on the post, will be playing not to lose. If at any time during the game Georgia feels they are in a position to lose, they will.

The Tigers need to come out hard and fast and put the Dawgs on the defensive from the start. The same should be said for App. St. Do not give them a chance to believe that they can upset us.

As you point out in your post UGA has multiple opportunities to regain momentum and reputation. Plus, UGA only needs to be the 5th best SEC team in order to make the playoffs. UGA has hardly any pressure on them for this game and can treat it like a preseason tuneup.

If Clemson loses in anything other than a very close game, the “Dabo’s done” narrative will haunt them all season with no chance of redemption until the playoffs. Plus, after last year, Cade, Riley, and the offense are probably emotionally fragile. Lose to UGA with poor offensive play and the season can unravel quickly.

It does not affect SEC standings and the Dawgs are an almost lock for the top 12 either way. Basically, just win the SEC and the rest does not really matter except for bragging rights. I feel like Clemson is in the same scenario. It would be nice for the Tigers to get the win just to set the tone for the season.

Clemson needs it more to build some confidence in their program. Right now everyone outside the program is waiting and praying for Clemson/Dabo to fail bc in their eyes his "refusal to adapt to the portal and NIL" should spell doom. If Clemson wins this and finishes with 1 loss and a run into the playoffs it changes the perspective on what Clemson is and how Dabo is doing things, especially if it's with a QB that had to be developed and not Portaled in or came in as a generational talent.

UGA on the other hand will get a pass if they lose especially if they finish with only 2 losses on the season. The SEC will get 3 teams in at a minimum, no way UGA is left out. No one questions how Kirby runs his program (outside of internet forums blasting his players for getting in trouble). At this point it is expected for UGA to replace Bama, a opening day loss will not kill the optics of that program. Clemson losses the way people are expecting (17+ points) the way voters look at them makes it an uphill battle to get in and a second loss leaves Clemson out with alot of negative talk going into the post season.

This will be a slobber knocker. Both teams badly need this win but for different reasons.

Georgia is out to make a statement and will likely run up the score given the opportunity.

Clemson obviously needs to get back on the path to the " elite " status that has eluded them of late.

We will need to get out of the gate quickly against the Dawgs and hang to the end.

As Dabo likes to say the last 4 minutes of the first half and the first 4 minutes of the second half will be the most critical 8 minutes of the game.

We absolutely must win the turnover battle or this game could get ugly in a hurry.

The game plan for Riley will be to be unpredictable with some new wrinkles not yet seen by our opponents yet is executed at a high level by Cade and our expected somewhat improved O line.

Of coursec a heavy dose of Mafah naturally will be a crucial part of that but we can't wear him out early by leaning on him too much.
If he's just getting lathered up early in the third Q I like our chances

Given an early lead our D can turn it on and hold off a dawg comeback.

Go Tigers !

While a loss would damage Georgia's preseason reputation possibly more than a win would help Clemson's (the pundits would say "you can't put much stock in week 1"), the assertion that Georgia would miss the playoffs with a loss to Clemson is absurd.

Georgia would have to be worse than fifth in the SEC to not make the playoffs.

A loss would definitely be more damaging to GA since they are a huge favorite. It's kinda like how losing to Duke last season basically started the destruction of our season but if they'd have lost to us it wouldn't have really mattered either way to them.
