Who is the best RB on our team??

Oct 26, 2014, 11:52 AM

I change my mind every week.

CJ Davidson is the most dynamic, definmately fastest.

Gallman has the ability to pick up tough yards, though he runs too high for my taste.

Choice appears to be the most well-rounded of the backs, and was the apparent go-to before his injury.

Dye of course is heralded as the great future back, but who knows.

Howard is very good with his north-south running ability.

None have shown the ability to create something out of nothing the way that CJ, Ellingotn or McDowel could.

Thoughts?

Well for this week it's Gallman.

Hopefully Dye can burst on the scene and give us a boost too.

I've always maintained that Gallman is our best RB***

If CJ could hang on to the ball I say him. Gallman is close but like you his running style and size is going to get him killed.

Gallman is 6'1" and 200lbs...

Oct 26, 2014, 12:20 PM

He is by far the most physical RB we have. You don't like his running style, but his style did make him the first 100 yard rusher of the year.

He ran hard. But his running style is like Eddie George without the extra 2 inches and 30 lbs. lol

It works for him right? So sit back and appreciate it.***

No way he is 200. Lbs all I'm saying is lower those shoulders. He gets grabbed from behind and stopped in his tracks a lot. He is young and will be a good one tho.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gallman actually weighed in at 209 lbs in the spring...

I think CJ is the best runner but he ball security hurts him

greatly, Gallman and Choice are the better RB's for that fact

I think you answered your own question. Our best RB changes from week to week, and they bring different things to the table. It doesn't matter to me if no one stands out, as long as they get it done as a unit every week.

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

Re: Who is the best RB on our team??

RB is a difficult position to evaluate because of style. for example there were times where spiller would get bottled up alot then bust a huge run and have great numbers.

I like that gallman does not fumble. Before the fumble davidson looked explosive, he looks to be the most dangerous if he had better hands.

we just need to block for these guys and good things will happen if we protect the ball. I hoped howard being the oldest would have come in stronger and bigger, but i still seem to see him getting bounced easily.

I think choice, gallman, and davidson would all be ok if we just finished our blocks a bit better.

will make the best backs look inadequate. Get our guys back healthy and our new comers in next year and it may not matter who we stick back there ;)

Gallman and Howard got their yard after Cuse defense tired.

Oct 26, 2014, 5:17 PM

Take them off the list.

Re: Gallman and Howard got their yard after Cuse defense tired.

Oct 26, 2014, 5:42 PM

They all have their upside, and they all have their problems.

Zac Brooks is hurt, of course, but he's always looked like a WR/RB tweener to me, a guy who's never really found his position or maybe just his role. He catches the ball very well but he never showed much leg drive through the hole. At times he has flashed that 4-star potential he was rated as coming out of high school but he never looked like a finished RB to me. I had heard he was building up his lower body strength prior to his injury; hopefully he builds on that and comes back more effective as a pure rusher.

Adam Choice was a wildcat QB coming out of high school and it looked to me like he was still adjusting to the college game, college angles, and the nuances of the running position. He does a lot better running north-south on the inside zone but he was not good on power plays (and our guards aren't athletic enough to pull effectively anyhow.) He was rated as a mid-level four-star coming out of high school...maybe, but while he was a load to tackle inside I never saw that next-level burst from him. Maybe that develops as he gets more comfortable and experienced, but we'll have to wait until next year to see - and he'll have to do it after rehabbing an ACL.

Gallman played more LB than RB in high school and it shows. He's about 20 pounds too light for the kind of high-contact runner he is - he gets arm-tackled way too easily - and he tends to turn his shoulders east-west and get dragged down behind the line too much when he should be turning it north-south and just getting what's there. He also has a tendency to frantically run up his blocker's behinds instead of being patient and allowing blocks to develop in front of them. I think some of that's just inexperience. Give Gallman a couple years in the weight room, and more experience, and I think he's got all the upside in the world. But while he oozes talent, right now he is not a finished product as a RB.

Davidson is even less finished. He's getting better every week but he's a converted track guy who really is just not that experienced handling the football, and a lot of the yips and fumbles and gaffes he's making right now are those a guy who'd toted the rock a lot in high school would have gotten out of his system then. His upside is so high you understand why the coaches are reluctant to give up on him - he's potentially another Ellington, physically, or very close - but his fumbles are an issue right now. I do think he might have a very good senior year if we stay with him.

DJ Howard is just a guy. He does everything OK and gives you a lunch-pail, honest effort, but he also looks like the low-end 3-star he was billed as coming out of high school. He is neither a huge back nor a fast, explosive one. He'd do OK if we had a better OL but we don't so he's limited.

Tyshon Dye, who knows? Physically he looks like the 225-pound north-south slasher you want in Chad Morris's offense and his high school film is outstanding. But we've also never seen him take so much as a snap thus far and he's coming off a major back injury and an Achilles injury and you wonder how explosive he'll be. If he contributes at all it'll be in the last month of the season (at best) and it'll probably be next year before we see what the real Tyshon Dye looks like...if he stays healthy. (Those kind of injuries are concerning.)

Who's our "best" RB? This second, Gallman. Who's got the most upside? Probably Davidson and Dye, though if Gallman can put on some good weight and develop a little more patience and vision I think Gallman will remain in the discussion. But Davidson needs experience and needs to improve his ball security in a hurry and Dye needs to get and stay healthy.

The problem is, none of these guys - as they are right now - resemble a #1, "bell cow" future-NFL back, like James Davis/CJ Spiller/Andre Ellington were.

Next year, everything could be different. In two years, we could have a scary stable of RB's. Right now we've got some projects and physical-rehab cases we're hoping will either develop or get and stay healthy. Or both.

Gallman has great potential. He needs

to put on more muscle and I think he will. He has one worrisome tendency - he often "dances" around instead of plowing through with the called play. C.J Spiller did the same thing as a freshman, so this kid probably has a great future at Clemson.
