Who else is excited about the Kentucky Derby tomorrow?

May 6, 2022, 2:11 PM

Any other horse racing fans here?

Zandon is the current favorite at 3-1, with Epicenter at 7-2 and Messier at 8-1.

Zandon's jockey "won" the Derby a few years ago, after the initial winner was disqualified.

Epicenter is trained by Steve Asmussen, the most successful thoroughbred trainer in America. Interestingly, despite all of his success, Asmussen has never had a horse win the Kentucky Derby. This seems to be his best chance.

This will be a full race with 20 horses. The horse that can best maneuver in tight quarters might be the winner. I'm keeping an eye on Cyberknife (20-1 odds), as he won the Arkansas Derby doing just that.

It will be a fun race!

A great event that is probably the oldest major sporting event in America. Amazing that it only last for a couple of minutes! Years of preparation for a few minutes of glory .

Like many of you I have attended Churchill Downs while at Louisville football games. Definitely worth the trip .

I have been to Churchill Downs several times...

but only once for the actual Kentucky Derby. Definitely a recommended bucket list item even if you don't follow horse racing (like me).

Been to the Preakness twice, and several Steeplechase events. Definitely want to make the derby one of these days.

May 6, 2022, 2:38 PM

Watch them dance for 3 minutes.

Wait around for 3 or 4 hours.

Watch them dance for 3 more minutes (in a different outfit).

Wait around for another 3 or 4 hours.

Watch them dance for 3 more minutes (in yet another/different outfit).

Wait around for 3 or 4 more hours for the awards/trophy presentations.

She actually earned a spot as a Rally Cat while she was at Clemson but injured her knee shortly after tryouts and never actually performed with them.

Asmussen may have the most career wins, but is 0-23 in Derby starts. I look for Messier to skate to the finish line first.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m not sold on Messier. Canadian horses generally don’t fare well in the Derby.

May 6, 2022, 2:37 PM

Messier was a Bob Baffert horse and is now with a new trainer. We will see if that affects him tomorrow.

Take Secret Oath (1) in the Oaks tonight. Easy money.

Messier and Taiba are good for the Derby. Buffett horses unofficially, so you can expect them to perform like Nuke.

Your odds are old. Zandon is no longer the favorite - Epicenter and Taiba are.

to win The Triple Crown. Even though it has been done now several times in my lifetime, it takes a MUCH better than average horse to even have a shot at it by winning the first two races, The Kentucky Derby and The Preakness, most years.

Many a pretender has had their dreams shattered in that third and longest race, The Belmont Stakes. And one named Secretariat achieved true immortality in it in 1973.

Dan Fogelberg wrote a really great song about horse racing, and the Derby in particular:

Secretariat’s track records in each of the three triple crown races still stand today.

May 6, 2022, 5:19 PM

What an amazing feat! How many sports records from nearly 50 years ago still stand? Incredible.

We will probably never see another horse like Secretariat.

The Derby for all of the glamor that it represents had become a bit of a turnoff for me as the number of entries has exploded. Racing is tricky enough as it is, but with such a vast field many a good horse has gotten boxed in. Preakness and Belmont usually have somewhat more reasonable numbers and are more watchable for me.

It's been a 20 horse max field for like 50 years...are you saying it isn't typically fully booked?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Who else is excited about the Kentucky Derby tomorrow?

May 6, 2022, 5:15 PM

No, just that the extremely large field. Having grown up on the track as a kid I have a lot more appreciation for a 8-12 horse field. 20? Just too many. Yeah, less Cinderella stories but just my opinion better racing.

I know nothing about it but usually tune in. Definitely fun to watch. What would happen if they pushed that race to 2 laps? I have never been around horses.
