The difference today was that the Oline gave Cade more than .5 seconds to go through his progressions. The play calling and designs were the exact same. He simply had enough time to get past his first read. Dabo didn’t stop calling plays, he never was. It’s not complicated…. Amiright

the question of why does losing two starters result in the o-line playing so much better is a mystery for the ages.
Maybe these young guys Austin has been pulling in (I hear he's trying to get bigger dudes and do less cross training) are better come gametime?
We found something that worked today, no doubt.

Same with mafah … I’m not trashing ship I think he’s a great athlete and we could use him in a lot of ways but mafah is a much better pure runnings back and seems to let holes and the play develop… he also ran through a TON of arm tackles today that ship seems to go down on a lot. The passing game still needs a lot of work … watching other games all day it’s still frustrating that we can’t get wrs open on deeper passes … I just feel like we don’t run good routes or something.

On the flip side of the coin Notre Dames starting center was an absolute patsy knocked two yards deep in the backfield most plays. Why was he their starter when it looked like their 2nd and 3rd team centers were better? What is it with coaches and talent evaluations?

It looked to me Cade read the blitz better and there were better hot routes. More than one completion was in the area where the blitzer came from.
ND also blitzed themselves out of run defense a couple times too.

I don’t get what you guys think you saw yesterday? Mafahs jump cut were his and that’s where he got the extra yards today, but overall the team average was down yesterday. The subs held up well, but it wasn’t “better”.
We didn’t have catastrophic turnovers. That’s why we have 4 losses and why we didn’t lose yesterday.

Klubnik's negative rushing yards & the bad snap w/ 15 yard loss skewed the numbers back down to 4 ypc.

Again, the numbers went down. Rationalize if you want, but the stats are the stats and they’re determined the same way every week. QB sacks and lost yardage are also in the season averages.

The last 12 carries netted 23 yards, so you've got some skew on the average there at the end.
We started playing 'run the ball with no creativity to run the clock out' and lost that YPC.

Cade’s numbers were one of the worst of the year, I think, and he is usually decent when given time. I think we ran A LOT more slants and quick hits vertically rather than horizontally and that was different then previous games. It is also why we ran up a good offensive show in the first half and then we were pretty much shut down in the second half once ND adjusted.
The OLine DID do a better job in run blocking and they also had a much better running back running behind them then we have been featuring.
Just my thoughts.

Honest assessment here. Happy for the win against a solid team. And loved some things I saw from the offensive line today in the run game. Hope we stumbled onto something with the best personnel. That being said, the offense was very underwhelming in the second half and had bad news bears moments. Cade did not have a good game.
This was the same team we have seen the last three weeks. We just avoided the devastating turnover. Although we tried.

Agreed. And given that fact make me hopeful about this line moving forward. ND was lined up to stop the run and they could not.
One could argue that had we stuck with it more we may have had a better second half. Riley threw in some screens etc. and a toss that really would hurt drives.

Cade was 13/26 for 109 yards 1 TD and 1 INT; that’s not good. Are you saying that it was? We won today because ND got big boyed by Mafah and because Jeremiah Trotter Jr is a perennial NFL pro bowl player; I don’t mean someday he’s that guy already. Put him in the game tomorrow for the Panthers and you’ll get the same result that you got for the tigers today.

I was going to say the same thing about Trotter. His cover skills growth will make or break him in the NFL. He refines this and I am with you on the pro bowler thing.
PS. Should play some RB next week with the jukes he displayed today. 😊

I don’t think Cade was terrific. He is a bit hobbled. But, I think there might have been at least four drops and at least 2 others where his receiver was disinterested.

He was 6-6 on a critical drive. Several drops. The INT hit Colin’s perfectly and Collins just missed it and popped it up into the air. Cade also made some smart throw aways which he has not shown the ability or willingness to do before. Throwing it away and living for another play, even if it is a punt, is a sign of maturity for a QB.

13 of 26 for 109 yards. Gimme a break with the rationalizing sir. I do think Cade will be great, but he’s the biggest constraint we have on offense right now.

Cade turned the corner.

That is not to be ignored. The film bears me out. He was hitting crossing route without breaking the receiver's stride. Two steps back and release. Blitzes didn't have time to get to him.
I'm not disrespecting the blocking but time never helped DJ do what Cade did yesterday. DJ simply couldn't hit a laterally moving target and Cade struggled to do that until yesterday.
I'm not taking anything away from your praise to our linemen. They did a super job but Cade's ability to hit a pass that wasn't stationary kept the defense off their heels and added yards after the catch to many, many passing plays.
Imo, the that was the difference in our offense. Mafah did great, ripping through tackles but a significant number of those yards after contact came because ND's secondary couldn't play a soft zone and make tackles on the receivers after the snap. Their attention was divided which resulted in the running and passing games being complimentary to one another.
Why Cade isn't getting more credit is beyond me. I whined about his DJ-like inability to hit those passes all year. I pointed out those crossing route passes he hit when flashes of his greatness lifted its head.

Look at the number of times we ran the ball yesterday. The play calling obviously changed. That’s how we had an improvement in red zone scoring.
