I love Tigernet because it reminds me of living in Johnstone

There was that short little dork at the end of the hall. He always bragged about the multiple chicks he had “back home” in Bishopville, but none of them could come up to visit because they didn't have a driver license yet.
The yankee transplant that walked around in his Ohio State jersey, talking about how much better it was than Clemson, but they didn't offer his major.
The two high school best friends from Belton Honea Path…. Their hometown buddies would come in Saturday nights to party, dressed like New Jersey club hoppers, gold necklaces outside of their popped collars and smelling like they took a bath in Polo Sport.
The RA always thought he was in charge. But at least once a week, the jokey pranksters would catch him with his pants down, so to speak.
Shower time was always tricky. No matter which of the five shower heads sticking out of the wall you chose, somehow, that weird guy you never saw on the hall, would end up lathering himself within arm's reach, right beside you.
Then you had that group of mental ruffians who would gather in the bathroom to brag and laugh about their poops and then rip the shower curtains off of the stalls on the way out.
Mr. party animal from Spartanburg, when drunk, was always far too happy to show off his attributes and let his towel hang open as he strutted down the hall to the shower.
Can't leave out the guy who thought he was the smartest thing since sliced bread. Fancied himself some cooking genius, but when he used the common kitchenette, it just stunk up the whole place and made everyone hate him even more.
It's nice to see very little has changed from back then. Everyone still together, sharing space in an outdated locale while willing to accept and even welcome the other non-true fans.

" the common kitchenette" - really? You had a common kitchenette? Dang, you millenials had it soft. We had to walk 3 miles in the snow with no shoes to find a kitchenette.
Johnstone was fun man - well, except for the intense heat (no AC) and extreme cold, and noisy, and ...

Well, Johnstone hall was an experience. In 1969, there was one phone on the hall, females were not allowed on the halls,( of course there were no females living on the west side of campus), there was no A/C and the heaters came on periodically, controlled by the P Plant. There were no elevators and the bathrooms were those of military barracks. Facing west in the fall was like being in an Easy Bake oven in the afternoon until the sun set. Classes ram 5 and a half days per week and Rat Season did not end until the first Football victory. Fortunately, we played Virginia the first game. And freshman were not allowed to have a car on campus. The girls had it better with a ratio of 4.9 guys to every female registered on campus. That included women teachers taking night classes that you never saw and one fast food place, Hardees, across 93 from Fike Field House. There were not any hand held calculators except for slide rulers. WSBF on the radio. TVs were few and far between with reception being poor in a metal building.

In 1969, I really don't think there was a Hardee's yet across from Fike. The only places I remember to eat were Dan's, Red Carpet Lounge, a pizza place opened in 1970, I think, right behind Study Hall. Or one could go out to Howard Johnson's, The Old House, Walhalla Steak House, a restaurant in Central, and Crenshaw's in Pendleton. Of course, the old standby, Mac's. During the day you could get 10 cents draft and a can of smoked oysters out at Lester's. There were more, I'm sure, but I'm old and my memory ain't what it used to be. Besides, I drank a lot of 10 cent drafts.
As for shower curtains, I never saw any in New F or Bowen Hall...EVER! Just shower heads sticking out of the walls. Your choice. No doors on the poop stalls. And when you flushed, you had to holler "Flush" if anyone was taking a shower lest they get scalded.
In summer school, everything was different over in Manning and Lever. Privacy prevailed. The very few females at Clemson had it made.

I was in Lever (first year it opened, I think) and the front, center shoe box one year, the rest of the time was in the Tin Cans. Lever was nice. Harcome commons dining was so much better than shitletter. The fast foot shack in the quad has burger with a fried egg and chilli sauce they called the super 70 ‘ cause it cost a whopping 70 cents.

this is interesting. when I was there in the 80's, word on the street was that shiletter was slightly--ever so slightly--better than Harcombe, and that of course if you could get a meal at the Clemson House, you were doing really well by life.

Shoot, my first year, stayed in B-9. We didn't even have those newfangled things called "telephones" in our individual rooms. One phone booth on the corner of the hall. Millenials would jump out the window over that!

I moved in to the stone in 98, and they told us we were the first class to have partitions and curtains. Not sure how true it was, but we did have a dude steal a urinal and mount it to his window for a private toilet.

Sorry about double post! One of the funniest things in my stay in Johnstone was when I was in a friend’s room who had a pet flying squirrel. Someone stopped by with on the was to the shower with only a towel on and that squirrel ran out from under a bed and fan up his ley under the towel! The boy, the squirrel and the towel all went flying in all directions and we about died laughing!

Smells in T-Net land. Johnstone...E..and F...there were these smells. Strange smells...the ones mama warned you not to follow.
Like others, I have no knowledge of any sort of curtain/partition/'fill-in-the-blank'. Bottle rocket wars...yep...know them! One of the other smells! LOL!
The OP forgot that 'other guy'....the one who fancied himself as THE DJ and music aficionado.

Was in Johnstone in '82 as a freshman. Guy two doors down at end of hall had the most unreal loud stereo and blasted Ted Nugent and Ozzy all day and night. With his door open. No one else stood a chance of playing or listening to anything else lol. Still get a little twitch every time I hear Cat Scratch Fever or Crazy Train. Good times.

I was a freshman in '68. While our dorms were definitely elite compared to the tin cans, we had to wear a horrible straw hat and a cow bell around our necks during Rat Season. Can you imagine that flying now? We also had to be in the dorm by 8:00, having signed out before we left. What a life!

You hit it right on the head! Your Johnstone was experience could have been mine. One of the “guys” you forgot is the one guy from Latta that was the obsessive-compulsive rule follower. He would come out in his pajamas, house robe and slippers at 10pm and demanding everyone to be quiet, over and over and over. When that didn’t work he’d call the RA or Dorm Supervisor. Ahhh....the good old days!

The bullsh*t that occurred on the halls and ledges were entertaining enough, but the convenience was perfect.
The B.S., joking and arguing on T-Net reminds me of those days, also, and should anyone think students didn't raise he1l about everything Clemson related then, well, they are mistaken.
Oddly enough, I was somewhat of a he1l-raiser, which promptly changed my last two years, as a hall monitor and supervisor. The money spoke! lol.

Johnstone was awesome!! Made the friends of a life time while staying there and we still stay in touch. After that, I moved out to Cedar Hood, I mean Cedar Wood behind Old Stone Church. There was always some funny crap going on, on our hall. College is a melting pot of all the crazy things kids did in high school. Some of the things I saw were truly amazing and very educational!!!
1. One guy on my hall had a recording of a girl having a major ######. He also had some BIG speakers pointing out his windows. He would see a group of girls walking by and he would blast them with it. They could not figure out where it was coming from because the sound was bouncing off the other Johnstone sections toward the post office. He would even do it to the girls walking with there parents during move in days! It was awesome. They would blush and laugh!
2. First year there no shower curtains in front of toilets, second year they put shower curtains up but they soon had cigarette burn holes all in them.
3. There was this one guy on our hall who apparently had a hound dog nose. He always knew when we had pizza in the room. We learned to never answer the door until it was all gone.
4. Those Chanello's party pizza were the BOMB! The Danny Ford and Cliff Ellis subs were good too.
All in all, I loved my experience of Johnstone D4 and would have stayed there all 4 years if the same guys would have stayed on the hall. However, being a rising Junior and knowing all the guys were moving on, I went with a buddy to Cedar Wood.

In 1980 - 1984, neither D-4 nor F-5 had shower curtains or doors for the poopers. A good newspaper was always available though. They must have made major upgrade to the "tin cans" after I left.

There were no curtains? In 72 in E section. The mad dash for great meals like at the stadium after Hogan’s hero’s. Pj made in new F with dry ice from the chemistry department Shaving cream under the doors and funky incense from some rooms. Endless phones ringing from some rooms. Tigernet is much better than Johnstone
Didn't know any better when I first got there but most of us survived except for the ones that flunked out or transferred.
We had one guy who went out for football, quit and just left. Don't believe he ever went to class but he was a really nice BIG guy
Will always remember my roommate from Asheville and my other friend who remains one of my best friends today.
Was a great growing experience that I never want to repeat
Thank God they tore them down to end the suffering
But Clemson is SO GREAT and I am Orange until I leave this earth

You forgot “the daredevil”. I lived on E6 late 70s. After a night on the town everyone goes back to the room and in search of more food or more beer, “the daredevil” walked down that concrete ledge, six floors up, climbed in the open window to raid someone’s mini fridge for a few more beers or ransack the guys food stash. Happened a lot and seems real dumb now!
No kitchenette or shower curtains when I was there either, but the rooms still had rifle racks from old military college days.

I stayed in Johnstone in the Winter semester of 88. First weekend there it snowed about 15 inches and the whole chipped in and got a keg and put it in the snow, good times. I was on the second floor with a nice view of the Valley every morning. Don't remember any kitchenette, but I do remember the showers. Come to think of it some girl passed out after puking everywhere in the bathroom at the before mentioned keg party. Go Tiger's!

83-85 in Johnstone. We had a football then as well. Not as good as now, but pretty darn great.
We would be up big and leave the game at halftime (sorry Nickie Saban). We'd go back to Johnstone, pull our cooler out into the ledge, and drink beer watching and listening to the action from the stadium.
After the game, we'd sit there, drink beer, and heckle friends and others from above as they walked back home. Not one fatality during my years...there were a few that fell (not with me), but they survived. My guess is the alcohol absorbed the majority of the blunt force...
I think we were F5 - highest floor, directly facing the stadium.
And correct, there were no doors or curtains. Every man for himself...

all the smells.... Mercy.....favorite memory: tipping over the ticket witches' little buggy thingy. 1 time in the late fall, after receiving 1 too many tickets, 4 of us had our way with the little buggy. No, there was not anyone in there at the time. Still, it took the CUPD bringing out a tow truck to get it back upright. Thank goodness no live cameras from big brother back then.....

Johnstone in '68 - a place where you could play cards with your buddies, while watching someone on LSD swatting at stuff lying in a bunk next to the card game. We had to watch over and protect these brilliant minds that would someday be leaders in our society.

There was also a few dudes who were just always getting wasted and gave up on going to class after the first week. They were one semester or year and done.

1976 - C4 the Pershing Rifle Hall. We were just regular freshman scum. Not many of the ROTC persuasion lived there so things were quiet until FRIDAY!!!! Two guys lived across the hall. One was the clean cut farm boy type-about 6' deep drawl-roundish, slick back hair, real overalls and looked like he could toss a cow. His roommate was about 6'3" and looked like Tommy Chong down to his preference for odoriferous compounds and beard..Friday night was "Fight Nite" Came back to room one Friday night (Sat am)to an interesting site. You remember how our janitorial staff placed those 55 gallon metal barrels in the hallway corners. That nite-Chong's legs and feet were sticking up from a can wedged in back-scissoring like underwater ballet with a serenade of colorful metaphors of which only a mother could be proud. Farm boy had too much Wild Turkey that night and whatever started the altercation, ended with farm boy going back to his roots-he planted his roommate in a trash can. It's one of those images you never forget!

We even had a few undie raids from the high rises. Nothing like sitting on a concrete ledge tossing underwear to the ladies. Might even be a few marriages from names and phone numbers delivered in that manner. Who knows?

D539 in 1969.
You forgot the group from Orangeburg that went home every weekend and came back laughing about “mooning” everybody along the way back to Clemson. Roy was our hall RA. After a couple of weeks, everyone had had enough of Roy. A group on the hall, (not me), started pounding on his metal walls on three sides and the entire “asbestos” insulation sheet crashed from the ceiling to the floor.
Also remember flooding the hall on weekends and doing the run and slide.
Lighter fluid being squirted under your door and being lit! I’m sure that guy is probably incarcerated now!

When I came to Clemson as a freshman in September, 1957, the tin cans were almost new. We were also only the second freshman class since Clemson came off the military system and still caught absolute #### from the juniors and seniors who had no intention of letting us get off easier than they. We were told we would be Rats until after Clemson won the Carolina game, otherwise this humiliation would contine until Thanksgiving break. Being on the top floor of F-7 brought additional misery since performing almost constant errands for upperclassmen required a lot of steps-running. On the other hand, it was close to the loggia and The Tiger office where I was a member of the junior staff.
The gang showers and open toilets were somehthing that required putting aside any thoughts of privacy but at least there was a sink in the room which my sophomore roomate was quick to show me had uses other than washing my hands. The lack of air conditioning was of no consequence since few of us had it at home, but the sporadic heat was another matter. It was turned off somewhere around midnight and came on most of the time around 5 to 6 in the morning accompanied by the loud clanging of steam pipes. There was never a need for an alarm clock.
A bonus to living on the top floor was the "Sun and Fun Social Club". We used the roof to get a start on our summer tan. Climbing up was a bit hazardous but beat lying on the grass which was made up of about half wild onions. I lived on other wings, but ended up back on F for my senior year in 1961 where I was an RA. Of course, there had been no improvements to the dorms, but let's just say I had acclimated!
