primarily local business, nation-wide franchise companies with a store in the locale, or private individuals?

I see very few examples in Clemson (outside of the Tyler Brown commercial for the security company) of using NIL for business development/advertising.

And unless they are endowment type donors, I dont see "big donors" at schools contributing to a scholarship fund AND a collective. Maybe I am naive about the willingness of donors to keep contributing. I support IPTAY at a mid level, and even though I could throw more in the pot, I don't feel like that's a good use of my disposable income...

I believe that this year will help to settle some things out....my hope is that with all of the craziness going around, that the businesses will see that their investment is not really paying off, that the colleges see that the trajectory is not sustainable, and that the players learn that their college experience is being compromised big time.

how do you say it -- it just don't add up?
and at what point will the people investing want their money back ...

Clemson Football (Dabo's enterprise) is actually doing things the correct way. You win and it'll just come. Not everyone is a future professional and CFB is just an amateur league.

I'm still waiting for the NFL to relax it's college year requirement. That's the day CFB + NIL dies.

This here.

Deep pockets want a championship...but do they keep throwing money down the bottomless pit if no championships come? Eventually this will even out I bet.

To me, the craziest thing is seeing the incoming freshman catch these deals. IDK how some business people think it's a smart investment to pay a player who has yet to take a college snap.

For a star player? Sure thing - they proved it on the field and should make some money on NIL...but not every high-rated freshman player is a DW4/TL16/TE9/CJ28/SW5 etc walking through the door ready to set the world on fire.

The larger "donors" are using this as a tax shelter.***

So your saying they should get paid for play?
I am all for NIL if NIL means name image and Likeness. EX: A commercial, You sell a shirt or hat or other memorabilia with you NIL on it.
What we are seeing now has nothing to do with NIL and everything to do with pay for play.

It cant last!

IMO it's going to take something like revenue sharing, CFB cap, and financial records being made public to curb CFB free agency.

NFL relaxing their 3 years past high school rule isn't gonna do it. If the NFL had another minor league that rivaled CFB that could be a thing but potential millions with NIL in CFB v. maybe 6-figures in the XFL/USFL ain't gonna cut it.

NIL has the cart before the horse. The players wanted a share of the revenue that the schools are making. Right now, boosters are funding the revenue. I will donate to IPTAY but not to the collective. The players need to realize that they are slowly cutting their own throats and will kill college football.

Billionaire alums

Short answer. Bad thing for us right now is we do not have that many so we try to offset that with our large fan base donating…..but its hard to justify a family who is living day to day with inflation as high it is donating money to go pay for an 18 year old to get a 7 million dollar contract.

Do any of us really know what the players are getting? I think it is likely much less than the amounts you see in internet posts. My guess is a star player who is not a Heisman finalist may get a $100-200k. I don’t think it is millions. I have no proof but just a gut feel that it’s is an order of magnitude less than what we read.

I guess one could draw a correlation between what is happening with NIL and the LIV golf tour. The problem with LIV money is that it is not market driven. The money is just being thrown at these players to "perform" in something that there is just not that much interest in (yet?) to warrant it. But the ones throwing the money don't care. The difference being that the players on the receiving end are tried and true professionals. The rationale being that their name and talent will draw fans. But here again, it's not like the ones backing the LIV need a return on their investment. There is a breaking point with everyone. The gravy train will stop eventually if it produces nothing.

Sooner or later the money behind NIL will realize that throwing money after unproven talent is not the road to a championship. That's where NIL combined with the transfer portal is most dangerous. You can build a championship team using both. But at of the day there still are no guarantees. The portal is real. NIL is based on the hype machine.
