I think Kirby knows there are select few in portal better than his recruits and has boosters willing to pay for them. Not sure dabo has the booster that is will to give millions a year for a couple players.

LOL, nobody wants to be Colorado or even FSU, but we sure could have used a kicker last year and looks like a WR this. Do you really think Clemson's culture would be destroyed by adding 2 to 4 immediate impact players via the portal? If so, then our culture isn't what many claim it to be.

You can’t just wait until a highly recruited kicker misses a few kicks and then go ###### one out of the portal midseason. Portal aint open.
You also can’t just verbally whip every issue seen using hindsight with the portal either. It’s not a time machine.

the #8 ranked kicking prospect according to 24/7, so he obviously was able to make A LOT of kicks and did so consistently.
Maybe there were some signs in the spring prior to '23? And if so, do you just run out and try to find more kickers? We've not historically given kickers schollies and if Gunn is on one at the time you certainly don't hand out a 2nd one for a kicker (that may be unprecedented). So you go try to find essentially another walk on to add to the other walk ons? And do so prior to the end of April or whenever the portal closes?
Things aren't always as simple as just rolling the guy off under a shade tree and producing another player. THA PORTAHL ain't always the fix some of ya'll think it is.

If you don’t think taking a wide receiver, running back and corner from the portal wouldn’t have helped us this year, I don’t know what to tell you. I certainly don’t think you should take 20 players a year, but two or three to fill holes on your roster as long as they’re a good fit for your program makes a lot of sense to me.

Nobody wants to turn the roster over every year but adding a couple of pieces can make a real difference. We have a first round DT playing DE because of a lack of depth, we were hearing reports that we might have to start a true freshman at CB because of depth. Fact is if you don’t portal some and only replace departures with true freshman you’re getting younger every year.

At some point you have to decide if you are going to be the Hunter or the Hunted. We get less than 20 commits on average and lose 4-5 to the portal very year while taking nobody. The math doesn’t work there.
UGA, Bama, ND, OSU, Mich etc are the Hunters. Duke, Vandy, South Carolina, Wake, GT are the hunted. They lose top players every year to elite programs.
Dabo is going to let the portal kill the back end of his coaching legacy if he doesn’t adapt. Get 4-5 guys a year. Maybe hit on 2 or 3. That’s not FSU. That is what top programs are going to do until something changes.

100% right just fill some gaps. But dang if we’re already not killing it in NIL funds see what happens going forward. The donors that are giving are going to start to wonder why are we paying for this? Why are we giving money to pay a team that has no offense 4 season in a row? Dabos made some real effort at real changes with the coaching staff lately. Hopefully he does the same with NIL and selective portal usage.

Key has done a nice job at GT and they have gotten some talented transfers so maybe not the best example. I was referring to guys like J Gibbs transferring to Bama.
Regardless, they beat a bad FSU team. Let’s see how the season plays out. No way GT runs the ball on Georgia like they did on FSU. They are going to lose some games.

I don’t pretend to know how to navigate this portal era and I can’t imagine being a coach in this mess. But I played a sport in college and I promise you cohesion matters! I don’t know how a coach could balance “portal help” with not messing up team chemistry. It’s a mess.

I don’t disagree that it can be ok if used within reason and not the foundation of your program. Let me ask you a question and I promise I don’t mean this in a negative way. Did you play a team sport at a fairly high level? If you did I think the cohesion part would make more sense. It’s hard to explain but when you know and love your teammates, and know and accept your own role on the team , trust your coaches,etc it’s a lot more fun and productive going to battle together.

I guess I'm looking at it from the perspective of average turnover for a college team per year is a certain number already and wouldn't think 5 or 6 portal additions would make that huge of a difference. Yeah you make a good point. Maybe football is different with such a large number of players. I was not a football player. Baseball was my sport in college and cohesion seemed to really matter. I played some basketball too (not college) and I think it matters even more with that sport.

All of that is true but there's difference between a roster that's 30 deep vs 40 deep. If player A gets injured or is not cutting it, you need to have a backup option. The blue bloods always have been able to hoard the athletes and the results have shown on the field resulting in the same programs in the championship hunt decade after decade.

I can see that. As I said, football is probably different. Players expect depth charts and multiple players at each position. Football digs a little deeper into the roster each game which I’m sure keeps more players engaged and motivated.

Wrong comparison. FSU had to use it to rebuild their program. Clemson only needs it to supplement their program. I see 15 enrolls in Alabama, 12 in Georgia, 7 at Ohio St. Are you going to say those programs are failing because of the portal?
