He’s one of the classiest guys I know. And he doesn’t get nearly enough credit for setting up where we are now and what we’ve accomplished in the last fifteen years. I was at the Holiday Inn with the old round table that had coffee there every morning. It consisted of Frank Howard, Buddy Sparks, Bill Thomas, Gary Barnes, Ray Campbell and Jim Ensley. They ran that town then. Coach Bowden met with us there one morning and they asked him how long it would take to win consistently. He asked “Do you want to do it the right way or like some of these crooked schools do?” Coach Howard said, “the right way son.” Bowden said it will take about 100 million and ten years. He was spot on. We needed facilities and budget. He got it started. And he hired Dabo. Never forget that.

I agree with you. I’ve made my thoughts known in recent posts on this subject. Tommy Bowden is a first class Christian man who is largely responsible for getting Clemson to the top of college football. He has tremendous integrity, and Clemson is far better off for having been associated with him.
I get it that lots of people blame him for not getting us over the hump and for losing games we should have won, but overall he was good for Clemson University. He put us in position to take the program to next level, and he did do it the right way.

He walked into a position with some serious holes to fill both offensive and defensively. The fact he won at all that first year was remarkable. The second year was pretty special until that beat down at FSU. But TB was always very approachable. He was friendly and humble.

I was at that FSU game at Doak Campbell stadium. Because teams ahead of us lost in the weeks prior to that game, we suddenly found ourselves ranked in the top 10. Everyone, including us, knew we were overrated and FSU was more than happy to expose that fact.
My 12 year old nephew and I were sitting in the middle of the FSU fans, and we were roundly and rudely harassed all game. I appreciated one man who apologized and tried to console us, so not all FSU fans were a**holes. He told me that when Bobby retired, they would probably come get Tommy. That didn’t happen.
In his radio interview after the game, Bobby Bowden was less than gracious. In fact he was quite gleefully rubbing it in and pointing out that we weren’t in the same class as FSU. I remember talking to Brad Scott about it a week or so later, and he seemed surprised that his old coach made those comments.
Needless to say, it was sweet revenge in succeeding years as we eventually cut their a** and handed it to them on a platter.

If the comment was made in 1999, regardless of who was present, and we won our next ACC championship in 2011, my impeccable maffs say that’s 12 years. That’s pretty close to the 10 year estimate.

Good try, but Tommy came to Clemson in 1999; Frank Howard died in 1996.

His insistence on Clemson needing to update badly outdated facilities was spot on. He got that process started, which helped Dabo.
It isn’t a coincidence that Dabo started winning big only after our administration stepped up and put more money into the football program.

So you were at most 4 years old when TB was hired, and that makes you an expert on his tenure? You know nothing except what you’ve heard others say.
Tommy had his issues, but you can’t honestly deny that he moved the program forward.

He was a classy Christian guy that did not cheat but also had a high opinion of himself. I will never forget his sideline coaching. Always staying well away from the team on the sidelines with his headphones on and little communication with the team.

I never really liked Tommy but I do like his brother Terry and I

Tommy came off that way in the media, but he was more humble and friendly than most people realize. Handling the media was not his strong suit.

Tommy knew how to play up the good time charlie act, with his little jokes and phrases to continue to get extensions he never deserved..........he should have been at clemson 5 years but stayed 10 because the AD was not strong enough to fire him.
