Your favorite food you wished you could have one more time if they were still with us?
My mom the biggest Clemson fan ever made the absolutely best biscuits I’ve ever had.
She taught me how several times but I could never achieve the real deal and she never measured anything.
Those biscuits with butter & Molasses or butter & your favorite jam also, by themselves was amazing too!

My Mom made some desserts that I haven't seen since she is gone. Even something like chocolate chip cookies were way better.

My maternal grandmother made the best chicken and dumplings from scratch every Christmas and Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, she took the recipe to heaven with her.

I have a great recipe for cake cornbread. Two cups cornmeal 1/4 cup canola oil One large egg 1.5 cups buttermilk One TBSP sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt Large cast iron skillet coated with crisco Preheat oven and skillet to 450 Add all ingredients after mixing and bake 18 minutes. Toast the top to desired brownness.
That’s an old Appalachian mountain recipe. Super easy and delicious! Great as cornbread and buttermilk too!

Lasagna - took a day to make the tomato sauce from scratch. The next day she would assemble and layer the lasagna that included mini meatballs that simmered in the tomato sauce for many hours, sliced hard boiled eggs, pepperoni slices, mozzarella cheese and much more. Was an unbelievable treat every Christmas eve. You could smell the outstanding sauce throughout the house while she was cooking. The recipe came across the Atlantic from our family in Italy.

(We called her by her nickname because she wouldn't let us call her Grammy. And you generally did what Addie told you to do when she told you to do it.)
Nobody could pick a Pecos cantaloupe at the perfect time, slice and serve it up chilled and salted like Mimi did.
And nobody -- I mean nobody -- could make red-eye gravy or cornbread like Nannie.
(I was blessed to have had three grandmas.)

A young newlywed went to the grocery store. After walking up and down the aisles for several minutes, she asked to speak to the manager. She said, "I can't find what I'm looking for. Do you have any scratch?" The manager looked puzzled and thought he had misunderstood. "What are you looking for?" She replied "Scratch." He said, "I'm not sure what that is."
She said, "My husband says my biscuits aren't as good as his mom made. I told him I bought the very best biscuits I could find in the store." He said, "My mom didn't buy canned biscuits. She made them from scratch. So, I need to buy some scratch."

Mom’s chicken and dumplings. And of course her biscuits with it.
Close second is her steak and milk gravy, again with her biscuits. This is only second because several of us can come close to duplicating the steak and milk gravy. No one in the family can duplicate the biscuits or chicken and dumplings. My wife and sister make dumplings and they are good, but they are not the same as Mom’s.
Now I have the sads. Miss Mom’s cooking terribly.

My Mom’s chip beef over toast. Nannie was our maternal grandmother, and her Thanksgiving dinner was the best. They lived in WV so we didn’t get up much but always on Thanksgiving. Once sdk Mom for Nannie’s recipe for dressing. She didn’t have any recipes or cookbooks.

Brings back lots of memories. My grandma made sunday dinners and a lot of the family would come over after church. Fried chicken and biscuits definitely. Also, anyone else remember the homemade sweet potato fried pies? She would make these little small fried pies of sweet potato and apple.

Pot Roast - my grandma and mom both made it in an ancient cast iron pot. Tons of onions cooked down into a rich dark gravy. Cooked to a point where it was browned perfecty on the outside and would just hold together when sliced, but not to where it would crumble. I miss them both and the pot roast.

We cooked it together on a Monday morning 6 years ago so she could teach me how she made it (I had her recipe but good cooks always have special little quirks they do). It is a great memory because she passed away 3 days later, and we buried her one week to the day of my last cooking lesson. I miss her terribly. You young folks should cherish every moment you have with those you love.

Red Velvet cake! I have tried so many Red Velvet cakes over the years trying to get one that tasted anything like the way my Mom would make them. Many look the same, but the icing is the not the same.
The biscuits and gravy she made spoiled me as well.

while she was living. Now she is gone and I have been trying, but haven't quite matched hers. Problem was she really didn't use a recipe, and yet it was always consistent.
Lesson to those whose moms are still around. Get recipes written down. If there are old photographs that only she knows who the subjects are, get those in writing too.

Mac & cheese that had egg in it to make it congeal solid enough to slice it. About 3" thick. And a coconut cake that had to be 8" tall.

My Mom has my Grandmother's recipe for Spiced Icebox Cookies ... they typically make their appearance at Christmas!
Otherwise, my Grandmother gave me my love for green beans. And, my Mom makes a great chicken pot pie and the best shrimp and grits, both from scratch.

Granny's (my Dad's side) made the best cornbread ever. I still use the recipe and can get it close but not exactly what I remember. Maybe it was the wood stove she used.
Grandmama (my Mom's side) made the best cornbread dressing at Thanksgiving. I can't come close to duplicating it.
Mama made the best fried chicken. Hot or cold it tasted good.

Biscuits and gravy are two things you have to cook often to keep the flavor and consistency. Unless you’ve done it a thousand times like so many mothers did. My mother made the best gravies, from fried chicken, fried cubed steak, roast beef, had a great one from pork tenderloin. Marinaded in a good seasons salad dressing mix.

Mother's scratch biscuits, cornbread dressing, and real cooked banana pudding ( I did learn her recipe, very simple but have to be patient to cook the custard/pudding. Also made a special dish with chicken livers and gizzards, brown rice, peas, carrots and tomatoes cooked down. Kind of like a paella
Maternal Maw Maw - best blackberry cobbler ever. Made from fresh picked wild blackberries. Nobody could figure out how she got the doughy middle part of the cobbler to absorb the blackberry juice.
Paternal Granny - any cake, all scratch made no cake mixes in her house. Coconut from fresh coconuts, black walnut cake from harvested black walnuts (those things are hard to crack), peanut cake made with roasted peanuts ground almost like a peanut butter. At family reunions (remember those) people would watch for her and Grandpa to arrive with her cakes, then get slices and hide them away before the meal. Then those great peach fried pies fried in a big ol black cast iron pan.

Fried chicken, rice and gravy, fried okra and her biscuits that i just cannot come close to replicating. My great grandmother showed me how to poke a hole with my little finger and pour syrup in those biscuits. I once tried to eat the whole pan of okra too. Man her chicken was the best

My mom always said that the secret to a moist pound cake was in mixing it up for a long time.
Mom put an lemon glaze over the top of that pound cake 🍰 & it was out of this world!

Have to go with my Mom's "Butter and Sugar" sandwiches on Merita White bread with the brown edges cut off.
My Grandmother who lived in Miami would have lobster tails with a warming bowl of melted butter and fresh limes from her backyard garden for lime juice on your lobster. Salt as desired.
My Mom would give us Frosted Flakes in a bowl of whole ice cold milk with fresh strawberries.
My Dad and I would eat sardines out of the can with Saltine Crackers washed down with Coke or Dr. Pepper. If the fish were biting we would eat in the car on the way home and have fried fish for supper.
