Whats a good bourbon in the Makers Mark price point range?

Sep 5, 2020, 5:41 PM

I like Four Roses, Bullit Bourbon, or Buffalo Trace. Those are probably in the range of Makers Mark. It’s worth it to spend a few extra bucks for the single batch or reserve. Woodford Reserve is really good but a little more expensive.

Toured Buffalo trace once. Impressive place. They had some thing like Bailey we could only get there then. Forget the name but it was good.

If you are talking Bourbon Cream, most bigger liquor stores carry it in the cordials section.

Let me classify myself first:

1. I am 70 years old and have liked 'brown liquor' for well over 50 years since my first visit to Clemson in the fall of 1967 as a high school senior.
2. I had a nice career, working 40 years after graduation as an engineer. I made enough money to pay for my kids schooling, my house and a very nice style of living.
3. I give my church more money every year than I spend on Clemson football even though I've see most home games live from the 2 lower deck tickets I've been buying for 40+ years. I catch a enough away games that I can sing the Johnny Cash "I've been everywhere" song.
4. I drive a Toyota Avalon instead of a Lexus because the Avalon is a great product (for an old man) at a great price.

So now you have me pegged.

I like Jim Beam Black, Extra Aged more than Maker's Mark and regard it as my every night bourbon to have over ice. I've had better bourbon than JBB-EA, but for me it's a great bourbon at a great price. Marker's Mark is a nice bourbon. High dollar bourbon, like high dollar wine, is a product I do not appreciate enough to buy.

In order, my favorites

- Makers Mark 46 - For the dollar, my favorite. For the price, it's a close second to Blantons for me.
- Wellers - Again, for the dollar ($30) a really great bourbon. If you can find people selling at it's retail price.
- Buffalo Trace - Solid!
- Elijah Craig Small Batch

I have not had any Whistle Pig yet. What would you most closely say it resembles?

Whistle Pig is a rye whiskey. Completely different flavor profile, but it is awesome! Not cheap.

Buffalo Trace or Eagle Rare, made in the same locale as the Van Winkle wonderfulness

Weller is my go to if available, then Buffalo Trace, Four Roses. Rough Rider is also surprisingly good for its price.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Four Roses Single Barrel is my go to.

Sep 5, 2020, 8:55 PM

I sip it straight. If I were mixing it, it wouldn't matter so much. There may be better bourbons, but it's really good, and for the money it's like a sore goober (hard to beat).

I’m a scotch guy (mainly Islay with Laphroaig as my go to. Love the peat). That said, my college buddy from Louisville gave me a bottle of Rowan’s Creek that I enjoy and think it is similar in price to others mentioned.

Right in that sweet $35-45 range and they make a delightful Rye as well.

Someone mentioned the Whistle Pig, great stuff sits round $70 a bottle tho.

Is Angel’s Envy in the right price range ? Great bourbon &

Sep 5, 2020, 11:36 PM

GREAT people ...... we met the main folks at their tasting room a couple of Clemson @ Louisville games ago. Nicest people. AWESOME brown likker.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

For me it depends on how you’re going to drink it. Right now I’m looking at a self of 7 bourbons in my house, many in the Makers Mark price range.
I bought small bottles and tried them different ways first. Here are my preferences in the Makers Mark price range but yours might be different:
Straight - Basil Hayden
Manhattan - Bullit ( actually like their Rye even better in a Manhattan)
With ginger ale - Woodford although it might be a little more than Makers Mark

By the way, I have also experimented with a lot of bourbon drinks and come to prefer a Manhattan “up” with a Luxardo cherry. 2 parts bourbon 1/2 part sweet vermouth.
