For now, Republicans will simply say Trump is “trolling.”
Then Trump will run for a third term.
Republicans will initially give a couple feeble remonstrations, and then they’ll fall in line.
Then we’ll all be gaslight about why this isn’t a big deal and why we’re overreacting.

to voters, not to elected politicians. Many, maybe even most Republican Congressmen and Senators, don't particularly care for Trump, or his tactics. But they also know fully well that even the slightest utterance that doesn't toe Trump's MAGA line raises the legitimate specter of being ousted by the sizeable enough MAGA voter contingent in basically every district in the country. Hell, Elon openly threatens to primary anybody who speaks up against Trump, DOGE, and his administration. I don't think that's even legal, even though nobody has the balls to do anything about it.
So it doesn't matter that every Republican politician isn't all-in on MAGA, if they still vote that way at the end of the day because they know it means political suicide to not do so.

While the Turbo MAGAs would cheer it and pull for it, it would take a combine effort from Pubs and Dems who aren't spineless to stop it as well as non-MAGA voters to avoid shrugging their shoulders and allowing it because they still think he's a lesser evil.
I think people are optimistic that we'll have a fair election in 2028 let alone one at all. And even if we did and Trump loses, what he and his sycophants do to keep him in office will make Jan. 6 look like a garden party.

This stuff needs to be taken seriously. Trump did not install unquestioning loyalists as heads of Justice, Defense, FBI, CIA, etc., just to retire to Palm Beach. He has no respect for the Constitution, believes he can do whatever he wants, and knows that a Republican Congress will not interfere and the courts lack an enforcement mechanism. Jan 6 was not an accident. It was his "beer hall putsch."

It's probably the Insurrection Act conspiracy that didn't get very far last time. It won't be a third term, just an indefinite extension of his second. He's got a lot of time to purge everybody in government who will try to stop him. This scenario is exactly what the second amendment was all about, making sure we don't have a large standing federal army and that the state militias are the real military power. We got complacent when the guy they were afraid of took over 200 years to show up.
