Make their nil money be tied to the entire season. SEC had very few opt outs this year for some reason.

Brock Purdy makes less than quite a few college quarterbacks. Just in case you’re wondering what’s wrong with college football.

College sports WAS always amateur athletes. Now that all players are paid, they have to open the door for NFL players with remaining eligibility to return and burn said eligibility. You can see what it has done to the sport. There’s no loyalty. A commitment means nothing. It’s pathetic. We can’t unsqueeze the toothpaste though. Rules and limitations are needed or the viewership will implode. NCAA athletes receive on average $450k in received value when you figure room & board, strength & conditioning, trainers, medical, classes & books, nutritionist, and tutors. NIL + portal with little regulation = broken game.

Was posted on Reddit- no sport has unconditional free agency and cfb probably can’t survive it. FSU showed that the portal and NIL $ create absolutely no loyalty. Very sad. System is helter skelter and $ has to be tied to playing even in bowl games.

NIL, OPT OUTS, and PORTAL

All run hand in hand. First, I will address the opt out. If a player opts out for the NFL draft and does not participate in post season games, then you send that player a bill for the cost of their education. This should be included in the scholarship contract details. The player takes the risk of not being drafted and owing a large debt to the school. It would deter players from doing this.
Transfer portal is another issue I would address. A player should only be able to transfer as a starter or 2nd string player if his recruiting coach is fired from the program or if the player has an immediate family member who is terminally ill and the player desires to transfer to a closer school. 3rd string players should be allowed to transfer but waive a year of eligibility after their first transfer should they decide to transfer again.
NIL should only be available to players who decide to return as a starter for their senior year. A prime example would be Xavier Thomas. This establishes an incentive for players to complete their education and earn a degree. The NIL offer can only be presented by a source connected to the player’s current school. In other words, outside schools cannot lure a player away from his current school with NIL money. Doing it this way also prevents NIL money from going to waste in a player like DJU who ends up being a bust.
NIL sponsorship funding should be used to pay a stipend to players who participate in sports at the collegiate level. This marks a requirement for a minimum investment to the school in order to become a NIL sponsor.
If the NCAA incorporates the above it settles things back down, puts the needs and welfare of the players first, and protects coaches and players alike from tampering.

tuition for missing a bowl game?!!?!?!?! A player that is going to the NFL, presumably has a real shot there, that the coaches can tout they developed and sell to the next generation of players as a BIG plus to coming to Clemson? Man, some real delusion going on based on the importance of a bowl game?
There is no reason at all that an exhibition elicits this much reaction. In the same tune, should season ticket holders be mandated to buy two tickets to a bowl game to show their support, at whatever price the bowl mandates?

"NIL should only be available to players who decide to return as a starter for their senior year"
NIL is between a business (or collective, as we've seen) and an individual (player). It is not "pay for play" and the school is not (legally) involved. The Supreme Court has stated that amateur athletes cannot be prohibited from profiting on their name/image/likeness. The NCAA cannot put anything in place that requires a player to be a senior to make a private NIL deal.

Like your suggestions but 1st /2nd string is arbitrary so can’t be done. Just a simple sit out a year. They can still move close to home for family issues just have to sit out a year.

Your portal idea has already been ruled illegal. You cannot have different rules for different types of players. I would like to see all transfers have to sit a year.
If NFL eligible players play in a bowl, they should be given insurance. The debate will be who should pay for the insurance.

I believe that any player that has completed their degree and is entering the draft should be able to.opt out of post season play. Any others should have some type of financial penalty attached. If the NIL money is truly ran by a collective, then tbe contract could most definitely cover this. It would have to be done nationwide for it to work. Most all coaches and university presidents would agree to it. If they were not impacted by it this season, they will be down tbe road.

MOST responses here are to tie financial penalty/fee, tuition, something to sitting out of the bowl (and I agree w/ all of that), but the loophole will eventually be "FAKE INJURIES". I guess you could ratio on a per game basis on give BONUSES for those playing in a bowl, again.......what about the "hurt" players both real and fake??

Eliminate Bowls and Expand the Playoffs to a Championship and Consolation

Mike Leach may have been a prophet when he floated the idea of a large playoff format similar to basketball...
If NIL and the Portal remain as it is expanding the playoff would greatly reduce this.
FCS has a 24 team playoff and works fine..
I would have a Champions Playoff for the National title and a consolation tourney similar to the NIT for those who didn't make the cut.

Decision to opt out deadline is before 6th game of season. That is current situation considered. Once 12 team playoff starts opt outs won't happen any more on top 12 teams is my prediction. Too much draft stock to gain by making a big run in the playoffs

How do you make someone play in a football game? It's a contact sport. What your talking about is making a kid travel with the team. He can just say he pulled a hammy or jog around the field not blocking or hitting anyone. Kinda like the gamecocks o line.

committee having to decipher who is best, most deserving, for at large playoffs taking into consideration the opt out's that occurred during the mid-October post season playoff roster setting?
This would be totally bizarre, but incredibly entertaining. Huge risk/reward for players and teams.
Be fascinating to see how coaches handled it, would they bench the player(s) who opted out of the postseason or would they player then to give the best chance to win, despite their decision? I bet the coaching decisions would be wide-ranging.

I wouldn't. If opting out is who you are, I'm fine that everyone knows it. Now advertisers, broadcast partners and bowl sponsors might want it stopped so that will find a way to happen.
Does that mean the NCAA moves the portal dates to alleviate that? Maybe.
I saw a proposal to move the bowl games to the opening week of CFB season. I don't think that will work. It's a nice idea but I don't think Utah State vs Air Force in August is going to be something anybody cares about outside of those fan bases. Honestly, only a few care about it in December.
I think the bowls that fall outside the playoffs are on life support until there is a separation between the top tier schools of D1 and the rest. I think they could hang on for a season reward to the Boise State's etc. Maybe even fashion a pseudo NIT tournament for the schools that don't participate or even compete in the top tier.

A lot of people keep wanting to lock players into playing with their NIL deals, the schools have no legal say in that. Legally the schools are not involved in NIL deals at all, they are strictly between the player and a 3rd party who wishes to buy that players NIL for some purpose. Advertising their product is the generally accepted premise, but how many ads have you seen some of these players in? The point is however, the schools are not and cannot be directly involved in NIL. There are collectives that work with the schools of course to help distribute NIL opportunities, but unless the collective tells the player that they must participate in all games including bowl games in order to get paid, the opt-outs will continue. But then you have to consider that another NIL collective will just offer the player money to skip and come to their school.
There is no "easy fix" to the NIL/transfer portal. You cannot tie the scholarships to NIL, and scholarships are already on a year to year basis, there are no 4 year scholarships given out. Unless the scholarship offer has terminology in it requiring participation in a certain number of games or else it must be repaid, you cannot use it to force players to play. And what of 2nd and 3rd stringers that don't get into enough games? All you can do is not grant the player a scholarship for next year.
As for players going into the NFL draft, I don't blame them for skipping a bowl game. There's several examples of players getting hurt in bowl games and dropping from 2nd/3rd round to 5th or not drafted.
In the case of FSU yesterday - all of the players that opted out, if they aren't transferring/NFL draft bound I'd pull their scholarship and let them figure out what they want to do and where they want to go, but it's not at my school anymore. That frees up opportunities for new recruits/portal players that want to play for my school.

Put it in the contract for both the scholarship and NIL. If for any reason the player quits before the last game of the season they owe the university and the NIL group 25% of the total amount of money and total scholarship cost received for that school year. It’s not that hard to solve.

If the players are guaranteed NIL there is a contract and I don't see why the contract can't include pay out based on certain "appearances or participation barring injury" at events. Just make the last payout larger to incentivise participation.

Greed and TV ratings are the only factors that initiate changes anymore In college football.
The major TV networks and their lobbyists decide if/when any adjustments will be made. These changes won't take place unless they directly increase viewership ratings.

Take TV money out of NCAA football.
Make it amateur.
The fans in the stands would know the football game starts at 1pm on Saturday. They wouldn’t have to wait for TV to determine that.

Opt outs should not be a problem going forward with a 12 team playoff. I suspect there will be very few opt outs on teams that are in the playoffs. If players from the 13th or 14th ranked team choose to opt out, who cares.

Easiest solution is what I have said for years- reduce number of schollys from 85 to 65 or 70 at most. Then players will be engaging in hand to hand combat to keep their scholly.
