Next DC Wishlist

There’s a couple of guys I wouldn’t mind Dabo trying to get to be next DC if he pulls the trigger on firing Goodwin.

First choice would be Greg Gasparato (Tulane DC)
- Played S @ Wofford, so had South Carolina ties.
- Defensive position coach from 2010-2023 @ various stops. Mainly Safeties coach.
-2023 was DC @ Troy. Troy finished with the #1 ranked total defense that year, with an average of 17.1 ppg.
-2024 is DC @ Tulane. Tulane was top 10 defensive ranking for most of the year and struggled at the back end and finished #26 total defense, with a 26 ppg average.

Next would be Indiana DC Bryant Haines.
-All Conference LB in ‘08
-2019-2022 was DC @ JMU
-Consistently was a top 10 defense at JMU, with an average of 17.7 ppg in his entire stint @ JMU.
-2024 Indiana DC/LB coach
-Top 10 defensive ranking with an avg of 16.7 ppg
Indiana had great success this year defensively but Haines has been loyal to Cignetti so not sure if he’d leave for Clemson, but I believe Clemson DC is a more attractive position than Indians DC.

Lastly would be Jess Loepp current DC @ UTSA
-UTSA finished top 10 in total defense this year.
-He also has an extensive coaching record and is proven to know what he’s doing.

I think all 3 of these are good choices but Gasparato would definitely be my first choice. SC ties and a proven track record of taking lesser talent and elevating it to success.

Gonna be difficult imo. But also, wouldn’t think Riley would leave from TCU after being in the National Championship, so who really knows.

But Gasparato has a great track record with extensive experience.
I’m sure Dabo has in mind who he wants.

- 17.3 ppg allowed over 5 years with Wisconsin
- Is multiple like BV. Very hard scheme to prepare for.
- HEAVY emphasis on stopping the run
- Aggressive/tough personality. Great communicator.
- Is a great recruiter
- Has experience as a cfb and nfl player
- Current Broncos db coach

That’s a good choice as well.

I was really only researching CFB guys but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him try and poach someone from the NFL.

I know a guy who also wants Dabo to try and get someone from the NFL as well.

defesnive rankings(PPG) under Goodwin vs Venables

It is clear as day where the problem lies, Goodwin has to go. Rumph is as good as they come, Eason did the best with what he had, a banged-up group of seniors who could not beat out underclassmen, who left early to play in the NFL, and Woods, who was banged up and quite honestly, needs to drop a few pounds.

Agree Goodwin has to go.

Question is who do you bring in?

Clemson DC seems like it’s one of the best jobs you can land, so it shouldn’t be an issue to bring in just about anyone.

Like I said in my post, Gasparato is my choice. But I’m sure Dabo knows what he’s doing. When he’s actually made an outside hire, they’ve always been a good one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Knows what he is doing? Like when he promoted Goodwin and Conn to DC?***

You don’t luck into 2 national championships. I’m not saying Dabo is infallible, but I think he knows what he’s doing as much as any coach in college football minus Kirby Smart. Promoting Goodwin was a calculated risk, it hasn’t panned out, and all signs point to the fact that he’s about to hit the reset button. Let’s hope he goes for a less risky option this time.

What would you be saying if hed hired a top $ DC

I wouldn’t be naive to believe that alls it would take would be paying someone to come in to fix the issue.

The problem has been building up for 3 years now at this point. It would take a year, maybe two to fix the issues the defense has developed.

Lack of talent in some areas, poor coaching/development, learning a new defensive scheme.

It’s the same situation Riley stepped into with the offense. I was aware that it wasn’t going to get fixed in one single season and would take time. Now we’re in the 2nd year of Riley’s offense and the unit is operating way better than it had been. The same would be true for the defensive side of the ball.

Now if he paid big money to someone and after the 2nd season we aren’t seeing marketably better than what we have now, then I would be a bit more concerned. But definitely not going to be ringing the panic bell just because it didn’t get fixed in one season.

JK questioning Dabo knowing what he’s doing by promoting Wes. He could have hired a headlining, top dollar DC and ended up with the same results. Then they would be complaining about how much the DC gets paid, just like they do with Dabo now.

Dabo is the one that went out and hired BV, the one Tnet wants to come back. He hired Morris, he hired Riley (although jury is still out on that one, I think next year is his “contract year”). He promoted Wes to keep as much of BV as he could. It hasn’t worked out and he will find someone new, most likely from the outside, similar to those you have mentioned.

I gotcha.

I have no problem paying top dollar for Coordinators if they’re worth it.

I think Riley is slowly showing why we paid top dollar for him and next year should be a pretty successful year with all that we return.

The defense can be fixed with the right guy in charge. I’m just not sure, regardless of who is hired, if it gets fixed in one single season. Which will give trolls like him the ammo they want to wrongfully criticize the hire.

I think of myself as modest, and not too critical of things like this.

But this list needs to be thrown

We better be da*n sure we get a better DC if we do pull the trigger on Goodwin.

Do we think Goodwin can improve and make game plans that can work against the good teams? Not sure.

But it’s got to either be a certified DC from a proven program, or in my opinion Chris Rumph.

All 3 of the guys I mentioned are proven DCs though?

Everyone gets their start from somewhere, until the right opportunity comes along to elevate them.

People were probably critical of Morris when Dabo hired him from Tulsa but he changed the way Clemsons offense operated.

All 3 of these guys have a track record of taking lesser talent and elevating it to top 10 defensive rankings.
It wouldn’t be that hard to envision them succeeding with the talent Clemson has/brings in.

My pick FWIW

Randy Bates is the defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Panthers football team:
Experience: Bates has been with the Panthers since 2018.
Accomplishments: Under Bates' leadership, the Panthers have:
Had one of the most productive defenses in the country
Recorded 230 quarterback sacks in the last five seasons
Finished in the top 12 in rushing defense four times
Scored 12 defensive touchdowns in the last three seasons, which was an ACC best

My only concern, same as the one I have with Indianas DC, is how much of the defensive success is coming from them and how much is coming from the benefit of working for defensive minded HCs like Narduzzi and Cignetti.

I’m sure the DCs deserve a lot of credit but it’s not as quite the same situation as it was with Dabo and BV, where it was clear the defensive success was coming solely from the DC.

I noticed that the JMU defense was outstanding again this year versus the run. I know Cignetti took a bunch of his JMU players with him to Indiana. Do you know how many were defensive players? I was thinking this year's JMU defensive coordinator would potentially be a good pick given their performance but perhaps those guys were the product on the guy who moved to Indiana with Cignetti...

I’m not too sure.

Indianas DC now was the same guy with him at JMU, that’s why I put him on the list I wouldn’t mind grabbing.

But not sure how much of the defensive success is a product of him and how much is a product of Cignettis defensive approach.
