What is really wrong with this team?

Huge turnover in coaching staff? Too many alum coaches? Poor recruiting at WR? Soft OL? QB not ready? Nerves? Team speed? Special teams? Lack of fundamental tackling skills? Lack of coaching intensity? Uninspired play calling? Does Riley really need to be on the field?
Or is it just a weird series of stumbles in the first game vs a pretty good team, road game, choke, key players making big mistakes, not used to pressure, lack of focus, lack of leadership, trying too hard? Murphy’s law? Or all of the above?
Dabo needs to explain, what the heck happened and what are they doing to right the ship?

1. We don't use the portal to fill gaps.
2. We hired inexperienced position coaches in the past, and they failed to develop our players. Sure, they can be playbook installation coaches, but they can't coach fundamentals and mechanics (QB and WR comes to mind).
3. This team has no leadership, no vocal alpha-dog in the locker room to get guys in line.
4. No intensity on defense, BV was as intense as it gets with veins popping out of his neck every practice and on game day. We decided to replace that intensity with a very docile Wes Goodwin.

There is a difference between a testosterone-fueled Brent Venables (an Erk Russell-type) and a Wes Goodwin. No offense to Wes, but being a terrific on-the-couch film analyst does not make you a tough high-motor motivating DC. Dabo is as organized and down-home intelligent as any HC leader can be, but he lacks that macho quality that a team needs.

It's rather easy to explain. The receivers on the team now don't have the speed to get open downfield. That allows them play closer to the line and defend a smaller area.
On the flip side, Duke is a decent team, and if you combine the previous issue with failing to score whenever you have a chance, Duke is good enough to beat you.

I love Dabo and appreciate everything he’s done for this team, but this all starts with him. I don’t look at it as hubris like some on here and the media claim, but he really got too into building the family culture and I think in that, “forgot” about the business side of football. As a man, I respect that of him. He was the nobody given the chance to fulfill his dreams, and now he wants to give that chance to those around him. If he was the CEO of your company, you’d love the guy and love going to work - so long as your company doesn’t operate in a field with such narrow margin of success as college football.
We used to be the team that punched up in weight. We’d consistently get three stars that would be contributors against the Bamas and OSUs of the football world. Now we get four and five stars that year after year we say, “this is the year they breakout”. But it’s not happening, because they’re not being developed. Too many coaches on this staff that were given the chance, but aren’t up to the task like Dabo was. Outside of Riley and maybe Eason, who on this staff is going to be poached by another team for an equal or greater position?
Yes, we could use the portal. Yes, we could have better receivers. Neither one of those are fixing the bigger issue of coaching. We should have absolutely been able to impose our will on both sides of the ball against Duke without a single roster change.
That’s why I ask the question - if we switched WR rooms with Duke, do we win that game? The answer is still no, because the problems run so much deeper. We are playing fundamentally poor football across the board.

Dabo is having a hard time accepting the fact that his once highly successful philosophy no longer succeeds in modern CFB (Portal / NIL)
