What is a "tater"

I'm not a native born Carolinian but reading between the lines it seems to be an insult to call someone a tater but it can also be a term of endearment depending on context.

Kind of like redneck..?

Coots used to refer to IPTAY as " I pick taters all year!", referencing Clemson as an Agricultural school back in the day. So they continue to call Tigers 'Taters', but they are just jealous of our success.

I pick taters all year?

Hmmmm…….so am I picking these taters from a tater bush, a tater tree or is it a tater vine?

Which raises the next question. Where in Sakerlina, do the coots believe is the best tater vineyard….or is it an orchard?

Coot- a foolish or crotchety person, especially one who is old!
Capon - a male chicken that has been castrated or neutered, either physically or
chemically, to improve the quality of its flesh for food, and in some places,
fattened by force feeding!!

*So, they're all denutted, old, foolish yard birds!!*

Kind of like Alabama calls Auburn fans "Barners" or "Allbarn."

Barners call Bama fans "Gumps" I assume for the Forrest Gump reference.

Taters are good fried, boiled or baked. The coots have an affection for fried taters since many of their graduates run the fry station at fast food joints.

It's also a vexatious wordplay on the acronym IPTAY (I Pick Taters All Year).

University of SC fans call Clemson fans taters to try to make fun of our agricultural heritage. They used to refer to Clemson as a “cow college” to try to conjure up some image of a dumb farmer. If they only knew the farmers I’ve known, they would understand that dumb and farmer don’t belong in the same sentence.

So yea, kinda like those who like to refer to us country boys as rednecks, thinking that it is somehow negative.

And BTW, no native of SC (or probably NC for that matter) refers to themselves as a “Carolinian”. We are “South Carolinians”. And they are something else.

I pick taters all year(IPTAY) is the origin according to my coot family members. And yes, they are embarrassed that one must “dig” potatoes not pick them. But not surprising, gamecock fans can’t even name their starting quarterback half the time. Another gamecock fan I know didn’t realize South Carolina had only won one championship, and he couldn’t name what it was.
