the Uneducated in SC vote Democrat?

With all this talk that we see from far lefties about Republicans being dumb I decided to look up a few counties in SC. I chose the two counties with the highest unemployment and the two counties with the lowest unemployment.
Here is what I found:
Allendale
13.2 unemployment rate
72% of people 25 and older have a high school diploma or more.
20.13% Romney
79.20% Obama
Bamburg
12.1% unemployment
75.5 of those 25 and above have a diploma or more.
31.8% Romney
67.14 Obama
The lowest two unemployment rates below
Lexington
5.5% unemployment rate
88.4% of those 25 and above have a diploma or more.
68.07% Romney
30.32% Obama
Greenville
5.6% unemployment rate
85.7% of those 25 and older have a diploma or more.
62.99% Romney
35.23% Obama.
Ok, in just this small sample size, it appears the less educated a county is the more likely they're voting for democrats in the presidential election. And the more educated goes towards the republicans in the presidential election.
I only had time to do those four counties but results look the same in many of the other counties I browsed over.
So, why is that? How can the republicans be so stupid but yet looks like more of them, at least in the small sample are more educated than the democrats?
And if the sample size is something other than education, what is it?
I'm a weather geek, I don't usually look at stuff like this so I'm sure someone more educated on this can help me out.

30 years ago the southern democrats controlled the state. lots of pandering to the religeous right and the clinton affair did not help.

The Democrats of 30 to 60 years ago are Republicans today. Thurmond led the list of those who switched parties. The first time I voted for a Democrat in SC it was that way. I remained a Democrat after the change over in parties and I'm happy that I did. The same was true in NC when I was there.

increase your sample size to include the whole of the United States of America. If you haven't noticed, South Carolina is not exactly the measure of standard for the U.S.
In fact, just look it up. The results are already out there.

The point I am making is that unemployment is divorced from party affiliation, it is a socioeconomic issue and the residents will vote in their own self interest. 30 years ago the tables were flipped.
bottom line is poorer counties will have higher rates of unemployment. due to lack of opportunity.

those counties are voting dem because it is their best interest to do so. As much as we like to focus on national politics, the real battle ground is on a state level and how funding is distributed. if dems are campaigning on providing more revenue to poorer districts for education and jobs, than I believe it speaks to a larger point than assuming the less educated would somehow vote dem based on ignorance. it is quite the opposite IMHO.

yes you can, on a federal level.
On a state level, I do not believe we can ever increase revenue once it is taken away, not in this current system. Once you open that box, no politician will get elected or re-elected trying to close it.
how do we address poverty in these counties?, your answer is as good as mine.

In my mind, it all comes down to education. How do we convince young people to stay in school?
As I posted above, a couple leaders of Marion County have told me how hard it is to attract reputable employers to that county because of the low grad rate. And I'm sure it's the same in any area with high drop out %

I agree,
That said, the quality of primary education varies wildly from community to community, and from county to county. We suffer from a value disorder and tend to grease the squeaky wheel when it comes to funding public education. Even as a liberal I have no problem admitting that it starts in the home.

On the other side, I can't help but wonder if throwing more $$ at it will solve it.
We can see stats of other school districts spending less money but keeping kids in school. Also, other countries that spend less than the U.S. but have a higher graduation rate etc.
Also, I can't help but wonder if we are to blame somewhat. We as in our government. We've made it easier to collect welfare etc. So is there a part of society that looks at high school as bump this, I know I can get $$ from the government?
In no way am I saying all drop outs or even a majority of drop outs feel that way, but there is a segment of the population imho does. And I believe that is learned from home as well.
As far as mandatory voting, not in favor. That benefits one party and one party only imho. The democrats. Millions of young people being forced to vote? I point out young people because that is a bigger voting block than older people that usually vote more conservative.
I believe the U.S. works better with two parties, although I believe we need more than two lol

we spend more money per student than the 20 or so developed nations ahead of us on education. I recently learned an interesting stat on higher education in that public universities spend more on advertising than educators' salaries.
maybe a no frills brand is a good start.

Must go to college. It has become a formality, that puts people into massive amounts of debt. Forget the idea everyone needs a degree and start focusing on giving people skills for the marketplace. plus, pay teachers more, but make it somewhat of an actual challenge to get the degree. I can't tell you how many people I know who went the teaching route just because it was the path of least resistance in college.

college was mostly state funded when I went, paid my Stafford loans off in two years.

Problem and getting them out of here would go a long way in putting black people in rural America back to work. It won't make them rich, but it'll help get them off the welfare payroll, and maybe, just maybe, instill some incentive to work hard and better themselves. Just one idea though, not the total solution.

According to a poll by Alipac.com blacks and even hispanics want the government and business to get tougher on illegal immigrants.
I don't think that we can deport them tho. But it's good to see that it isn't just crazy right wingers that want something done

Next question and I'll based it off of Marion County since its the county next to me and traditionally has a high drop out rate/high unemployment.
Some of the county leaders I've talked to there have stated how hard it is to bring reputable employers there because of the high drop out rate. (Looks like many of the bigger companies want an educated local to choose from)
How do we solve that issue? Of course we can't force companies to locate where people are choosing not to be educated so how do we convince young people to stay in school, etc.
Anyone have ideas?

I'm the one living on Maui about to retire at 57 in less than two years.
I watch the pubs come here to vacay by the tens of thousands every week, giving away their money to the "stupid lefties" living on this island.

Two issues.
You're not as smart as you think if you read a thread title referring to SOUTH CAROLINA and instead want to talk about what goes on in California or Michigan or wherever.
Secondly, I'm not a pub. I'm a moderate that gets a huge laugh when I see righties talk about how ignorant lefties are or vice versa. All that generalizing entire groups of people?
And sure, everyone is always "wealthier" on Tnet or most any site.
Thankful I was born with some honesty and proud of my measly 80k year job

That is comparable with what I retired at. I'm an educated liberal who has no desire to compare myself to anyone to the right of me. My life is good and I am content being me. I don't begrudge richer folks. Dollars are secondary. I use what I have to keep me happy and enjoy helping others regardless of their circumstances.

Yep. 80k is a decent living in most of SC and I also waited til I was 37 to marry and have kids so I was able to save a few dimes lol
But I have to be honest and say I can hardly wait for my wife to return to work. We decided for her to stay home the first few years for the kids. I plan to retire early so her extra income will help

Wasn't really what I'd call an argument, just something I found interesting comparing the two counties with the highest unemployment with the two counties with lowest unemployment. and as I said, I didn't really know what it meant but I do agree with Tigerbalms explanation.
But to your post, only one of your examples had a high grade rate that went clearly to Obama.
Also, I'm surprised Chesterfield has that low of a grad rate. There are some decent jobs in that county and close by in Monroe area. (And people in that county who travel to Charlotte area for work)

On second thought, Chesterfield is mainly rural, lots of farm land between Cheraw and Pageland.
So maybe that helps explain the low grad rate. Not saying farmers are dumb just that I know of a few that have dropped out to help on the family farm.

He hasn't a clue. We carefully tried (as a family) to explain to him the difference between a democrat like FDR, a democrat like JFK and a democrat now. I even went to far as to remind him of the 1964 and 1968 democratic convention. He was still clueless. He hates Obama and Bill Clinton. Still does not register with him.

What's the difference between FDR and a democrat now?
FDR oversaw the beginning of one of the most massive expansions of government in our history. Also he threatened the Supreme Court that one time.

He also saved the country and built lasting infrastructure with The CCC and WPA. Democrats are now and always will be the party of the people, not the party of special interests. No recent Pub. president can come close to him in love of country. BTW, he was highly educated.

Thanks for the example....
MODERN democrat-backed EPA regulations and laws would make both impossible today. Both programs would not receive one iota of support today from democrats because of their massive environmental impact. Democrats would be picketing, boycotting, sabotaging, and litigating any attempt at such an initiative.

So you're just saying that FDR was shittier on the environment. Well, sure, but it was 70+ years ago, and it was the Great Depression.

he probably did not support gay marriage either.
but FDR had a lot of clout in the business community, he was worried that if concessions were not made, the labor movement could become a real threat to "democracy".

You've highlighted counties that get the short end of the stick in this state for funding and quality teachers. A lot of that has to do with prior demographics involving poverty, racial make-up, and political influence. Poor education has proven to be a product of these characteristics, not the cause.
I'll go ahead and say it: It's partly a racial issue, and black historically vote Democrat post-Civil Rights era.
And since these areas are filled with poor blacks, our state legislature has shafted them for decades on education funding.
I think you also have to entertain wealth status in the counties, and wealthier citizens mostly lean GOP.

I like your thought process. However, some poorly educated folks can become wealthy by using their cunning and daring. In Adams Run, SC, there is a large drug dealing business. Those who sell are rich and most of them are black. You should see some of the cars they drive. These guys vote as Democrats.

So Greenville gets less money per student but graduates a larger % of students than Allendale county that gets more money?
I only looked at those two because it was easier to figure in my head than comparing Lexingtons 4 districts to Allendale.
