Mine is Bruce Jenner. He was the celebrity at my company’s trade show booth and when he wasn’t “on stage” he hung out in the back with several of us. One of my buddies challenged him to a race down the hall.

Ronnie Milsap, cousin. Mostly musicians in metal/death metal bands that I've supported. Hardly celebrities.

I ran into Yosh and Stan Shmenge of the Shmenge Brothers in a hotel in Kenosha. They were in the middle of their Tribute to Michael Jackson tour. They were in the bar enjoying cabbage rolls and coffee just like normal guys. A very cool experience.

Jerry Clower and Smokey Robinson...

Walked into a college friends house one evening and Jerry Clower was sitting on the sofa talking to my friends parents. Genuinely nice guy and very different than his on-stage persona. He played football at Mississippi State after a stint in the US Navy.
I had a job in high school working at the local skating rink. The owner previously mentioned to us that he knew Smokey. Walked into the skating rink one evening about a half hour or so before opening and my boss and Smokey were sitting at one of the tables in the concession area. Smokey gave us a signed copy of his "Being with You" album that had not yet been released commercially.
Not too many years ago, I also got to meet and chat with John Smoltz. My daughter was playing club/travel volleyball and her team was playing in a tournament in Atlanta. On the last day of the tournament, we were watching two teams warm-up for a semi-final match when John Smoltz walked over to the court and sat down beside me. He was there to watch one of his daughters play. Genuinely nice guy. Got to talk to him throughout the entire three-set match.

There is a great documentary called Hitsville, the Making of Motown. It focuses primarily on the period beginning with the birth of Motown in Detroit in 1958 through the early 1970s. Lots of interviews with Smokey and Berry Gordy. A lot of great Motown talent is featured as well including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, The Temptations, Gladys Knight, The Jackson 5, Marvin Gay, and several others. Definitely well-worth the two hour investment of time. I watched it on a flight to the west coast a few months ago.

Cuba Gooding Junior, he lived in my neighborhood, was a friend of a neighbor, and has his own nightclub in Downtown Santa Monica Called Harvelle's. Hung out with him one night at his VIP table, and he turned out to be a real POS, nothing like the roles he plays. He was snorting coke off the table and burying his face in a girl's cleavage that was not his wife's. He was also asking me creepy questions, like had I seen my 19 year old neighbor naked before, he seemed a little too interested in her.
When I worked at Paramon Studios, I bumped into Clint East Wood and Leonardo DiCaprio cause they were filming J Edgar Hoover. Eastwood did not utter a word, but Dicaprio I ran into a few times and was one of the nicest people I have ever met, a really humble, down-to-earth, nice person.

The pron star, not the singer:
Many many years ago, buddy of mine called and said that Samanth Fox was going to be at the Cedar Lane Drive in promoting her new flick. We bought a couple of six packs and headed over. Sure enough, there she was, sitting in the lobby, talking to fans as her talents were on display on the big screen. She was surprisingly intelligent and funny. We were able to talk to her for a long time, probably close to an hour. We got lots of pics (teddies only) and some autographs. She was very candid about her profession, the good and the bad. She was desperately trying to break into the mainstream, and was at that time a stand-in for Valerie Perrine in a Broadway musical. A very interesting character and an unusual thrill of sorts for the 19-yr-old me.

Also met Willie Nelson on a golf course and had a very brief conversation.

Oh, I forgot ... Danny Trejo.

I was in a movie scene with him. Much of the movie was shot in Greenville. He played a prison guard and I was an extra convict. I had no lines but was in one scene for about 10 seconds. Danny Trejo was super nice and down to earth. Apparently he was into tango dancing and was leaving the next day to attend a competition in Texas or Mexico.
It had to be one of the worst movies ever made - never released in theatres.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5105238/The Lost Day (Video 2016) - IMDb The Lost Day: Directed by Kipp Tribble, Derik Wingo. With William Baldwin, John James, Danny Trejo, Laura James. After witnessing a horrific sight, two men inexplicably claim to be one another at New Year's Eve parties...only the parties are six years apart.

I was in a hot tub with two of the "Wives of Orange County", just me and the two of them. I had no idea who they were at the time. Wife told me at supper that night when they were eating at the table next to us in a resort in Sonoma.

Some really great stories there. My list is strange. I have met Geraldine Ferraro and Bonnie Franklin (mother on one day at a time) at the NOW convention in New Orleans. Geraldine was busy and only spoke for a couple minutes as she was running for VP at the time. Bonnie seemed nice, but I was maybe 12 so not that interested. I got my picture with my favorite player, Pete Rose at spring training one year. It was my greatest treasure. He was very kind to me and was just sitting up in the stands and spent several minutes with me afterwards. I have met Jim Hunt, former Governor of NC.
In college one night after The Wailers had played at ECU, we went and found their hotel rooms and kind of partied with them and that was a fun moment. They were very sharing with the herbs.
I guess the most relevant person to now would be Asa Hutchison. He was a family friend and my father's personal attorney before he became a congressman or governor. Of course, now he is running or Presidential nomination. I will say he was a good man years ago and had a strong Christian upbringing.

I will add that I met Greg Norman in a Wendy's restaurant. I asked him for his autograph and then everyone in there started bothering him. I felt bad and told him I was sorry and he said no worries you get used to it.

He was on a flight with us when I was a kid. I went to ask for an autograph, and he said “there is an open seat next to me”. I spent the whole flight from Denver to Atlanta talking to him. He had just been traded from the Broncos to the Browns. He wrote me a long, personalized autograph before we deplaned. He was forever a hero to me after that day.

tale.
I was in a movie in the 80s, filmed in Richmond, Va known as The Ballad of Mary Phagan.
https://www.famous-trials.com/leo-frank/38-balladWelcome to Famous Trials, the Web’s largest and most visited collection of original essays, trial transcripts and exhibits, maps, images, and other materials relating to the greatest trials in world history. “Famous Trials” first appeared on the Web in 1995, making this site older than about 99.97% of all websites. In 2016, the site seemed to be showing its age. So Famous Trials 2.0 (thanks to my great support team) debuted in 2017 with a cleaner look, additional video and audio clips, and new features that should improve navigation around the site.
Based on a true story and originally set to be released in theatres, it was renamed and made into a mini-series instead. The cast list is impressive and because I was in the court room scene, I was put under contract, which meant I could eat & drink with the cast.
Tom Thumb, brilliant friend at Washington & Lee was involved in a project while working on his Masters, which would bring him to Richmond to visit during my time shooting. As life would have it, Jack Lemon, who played the Governor in the movie, was Tom's favorite actor.
After agreeing to terms, I was given instructions to not speak to Mr. Lemon unless he spoke first, which never happened. The man was lost in his practice & method. Also, because I had access, I was allowed to bring Tom onto the "sets".
One beautiful morning, Tom and I noticed Mr. Lemon standing next to one of the white columns of the Richmond Capitol Building and Tom was off. I had warned Tom I was asked to not disturb Mr. Lemon, but Tom was undaunted.
I took up a great spot next to a tree to see Tom approach Jack, Jack look up from his pages, if only for a few seconds and then Tom's disheartened retreat. When we caught back up, Tom told me he asked Mr. Lemon for an autograph and quoting Jack, "Let's not start that chit" and nothing more.
And the rest is history.

Husband met Glenn Jacobs, the wrestler Kane in an airport. They were on a flight together and he was a super nice guy.
He recently met #### Vitale. Husband is on the NCAA selection committee for Men’s lacrosse and he shared a box with Vitale. His grandson plays lacrosse for Notre Dame. He said he was such a nice guy and enjoyed cheering with him when ND won the title. He also had to help him up and out of the box. He said he’s not able to move around easily anymore.

Played golf with both Nicklaus and Palmer and spent time around each of them a number of times before and after playing golf with them. The last time I was with Palmer was having dinner with him at the Pine crest Hotel in Pinehurst. As we were walking out a couple of guys gambling hitting chip shots into a foam rubber pad with about a 8" hole in it grabbed Arnie and got him to play with them for a while ...... cool night!

I used to live in Peachtree City, Ga and a great friend was neighbors with Tim Hudson. Four of us went to Spring Training and were able to get into the clubhouse and on the field with the team.
I also went to HS with Marla Maples, who went on to become Trumps second wife. She was very smart,a great basketball & tennis player — had a tennis scholarship to UGA.

Butch Walker - musician out of Cartersville, GA (previously in bands - Marvelous 3, South Gang). Also has produced a ton of different bands/artists as well. Have met him many times after his shows. Super nice guy, always so appreciative of his fans. Even when he is at his home shows in the Atlanta area, and his family is there waiting, he'll always spend time with his fans.
Another person I've met a few times in Charles Barkley. Also super nice guy - one of my favorite basketball players. Met him at the original Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Tournament - 94 i think it was. Also met him again 2 years ago, and just super gracious, kind, funny.

Played Golf foursome with Hootie and the Blowfish Darius Rucker and his drummer Sonni (spelling) at Charleston National in Mount Pleasant back in 1993. They were buddies with the Club PRO there that was a high school buddy of mine. They would play golf there when they came to town to play at the Windjammer on IOP.

Stan Bronstein vocalist and Sax player of Elephant's Memory (also known as Plastic Ono Elephant's Memory Band - John Lennon's backing band) I went into a small bar in Southwick, Mass and Elephant's Memory was playing. Since I wore out their 8 track my senior year at Clemson, I knew who they were. I bought him a beer and talked to him during their break.

I was flying from San Fran to Salt Lake City around 1996. Somehow would up sitting next to San Fran QB Steve Young. Was very nice and got to talk to him a good bit. I was somewhat surprised that he wasn't a big guy. I was 6' 1" and about 215 lbs back then and he looked a good bit smaller.

The closest for me is hanging out with Julia Roberts' step sister Nancy (RIP) for a short bit when she was in our friend circle back in the mid 90's. Also met their mom during this time and hung out in what was Julia's childhood home in Smyrna GA.

What I think of most with Julia Roberts is that newspaper article where she complained about the lack of restaurants and social life in gaffney sc. Such a Big Time girl from Smyrna georgia!

Definitely Abbeville. The movie was “Sleeping with the Enemy”. I was there the night that she filmed the pie scene.
I took dance class with Shawn Weatherly.

Years ago while serving in Iraq I met Al Franken. Don't think much of his politics but to his credit, he came over to visit the troops. He was handing out AT&T 500 minutes phone cards. He handed me one and said, "You could make a 500 minute call or if you wanted, you could make five 100-minute calls." I interjected, "I guess I could even make 500 one-minute calls." He stared at me stone-faced and said, "I'm just trying to tell you how the card works." Guess he didn't appreciate me trying to muscle in on his phone-card humor bit.

Met Reggie White at a Mall in Myrtle Beach. He was sitting with his family so I politely walked up and said it was an honor to meet him. Shook his hand and said God bless you Mr White as I knew he was a minister. He said " God bless you too" and I walked away. Not much interaction but it was a thrill to shake his hand.

When my son was about 12 (or so) my wife and I took him up to Six Flags Dallas, right next to The Ballpark at Arlington. We planned to do the park by day then catch a coulpe of Braves/Rangers games. Sunday evening we came down to the hotel lobby on our way our and discovered the Braves in the lobby. Over the next couple of days we met Pat Corrales, Bobby Cox, Andruw Jones, Skip Carey, and Don Sutton. It was a great.

I went to high school with the drummer, Paul Riddle. Had one class with him, that I remember. Nice guy. Last I heard he was teaching guitar.
Years later, I did some work on their tour bus. Nice guys, all.

After my wedding. Albany, NY. 12/3/94. John was in town performing as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. His son Sean of Rudy fame at the time was in town with him. Both were in the hotel bar where we were. It was a good time. We got lots of pictures with them.

2 actually. First would be Carl Brashear. He was in the same dive locker as my father. They were both still first classes at the time. My dad made chief just before he did. Second is Jimmy Buffet. I went into a bar the blind tiger in Charleston sat at the bar and realized who I was sitting next to. We struck up a conversation and talked for almost 2 hours. He then picked up my tab. Said he appreciated just the normal conversation and that I didn't asked for an autograph. Super cool dude.

Early 90’s was down in Lake Buena Vista doing Disney’s College Program. Met Garth and had a 10 minute conversation about Oklahoma State (his alma mater) and Clemson and college football in general. Ended up scoring backstage passes for a made for tv concert he was performing at what is now Disney Springs.
Met a few other famous folk during my time down there, but Garth made the best impression. Tickets didn’t hurt.
PS. While at Clemson, I found myself underage drinking at Jungle Jim’s in Hilton Head. Being somewhat liquored up, I walked between LL Cool J and David Robinson having a conversation. Mr J did not appreciate my disrespect and gave me a little shove which felt like “dude, do you know who we are?” His expression was something like this

randomly walked up to my dad and starting talking to him at a golf tournament in Charleston. My Dad said that the funny thing is that people were so respectful that no one would even approach him. So he was kinda bored I guess and walked up to my Dad to shoot the sh*t about the buffet.
Dad said he's a really nice guy.

Soni from Hootie & the Blowfish, I played a role in one of his music videos. A genuine guy, it probably helped to sober up and find his faith but a really good guy.
Chris Tucker, he is one of the naturally funniest people you will ever meet and he is generally nice to be around when he's not treated like he's on display.
Jamie Foxx, used to be the life of the party but has really matured
Nikita Koloff, a really nice guy out of character, nothing like the persona at all
Cedric the Entertainer, another good guy to hang with and have a beer, which I've done on several occasions
Butch Harmon, when he was famous for being Tiger Woods coach. Had a lot of interesting back stories around the PGA.
Michael Dean Perry, never played the celebrity role, you know his Mama raised him right
Martin Lawrence, interesting fact is that he was a decent golden gloves boxer

He used to hang out at a club that had a regular house band. A good looking young woman was a regular too...he found out her boyfriend was one of the band members, and she and my brother starting sitting together regularly.
One night she came in and said, "Hey, I want you to me someone...this is my sister." It turned out her sister was Victoria Principal! So, he got to hang out with Victoria Principal that night! He said she was very down to earth and looked as good as she did on Dallas!

RUSH- was at a beta club convention in Greenville. The hotel over booked and gave four of us boys a room on the penthouse floor. RUSH was in town and staying beside us. They invited us boys over and played a couple songs. They bought us pizza and soda! Yes, they respected we were in high school.

James Caan. 2004 at Belmont horse race
Jun 19, 2023, 8:30 PM
|
|
Somehow we ended up chatting in the paddocks at the 2004 Belmont. Fun time as Caan was drunk off his lid, and wife was flirting with a bunch of folks.
Hung out for 30min then he invited my friend and I up to the fancy seats. Met Bill Murray. Then watched devastated as Smarty Jones lost his triple crown bid.
Based on reaction, he lost a ton of money on that race.
Afterwards, they walked to a nice entrance for a private vehicle while I fought the crowds getting in the train. Lost a cooler somewhere that day but drank fine.

I got to hang out with David Allen Coe and Ginger Alden back around 1980 or 79 not sure of the year. Alden was hot but we kept wanting to ask her if Elvis really died on a toilet. They were both at the home of Earl Owensby making movies.

Mine is Bruce Jenner. He was the celebrity at my company’s trade show booth and when he wasn’t “on stage” he hung out in the back with several of us. One of my buddies challenged him to a race down the hall.
Was it a drag race?

Danny Ford at the Coastal Carolina Fair. He was there to sell autographed prints of Death Valley. It was slow that night (I intentionally choose the slow nights) so I asked him questions for a few minutes. Not sure how much time has to pass for "spending time" to count.
Tree Rollins' mom worked with my mom. One day he came into their work (the old Hamrick's in Gaffney) wearing a t-shirt that said TREE on it, and mom, clueless as ever, speaks to him. "Tree, huh?" (yes ma'am) "You're tall enough to be a tree!" (I've been told that) "You're so tall you ought to play basketball. Do you, or did you, play basketball?" (Yeah, a little bit). He was retired by then. Mom came home and told me about this tall guy that she met. "MOM!!! THAT'S TREE ROLLINS, former Clemson and NBA star!" So the moms arranged for me to meet him at his mom's house--he was just visiting for the weekend--and I got some cards autographed and talked a bit.
Danny Manning at a scrimmage between College of Charleston and Louisville. It was pretty lowkey so he wasn't in "game mode" and was friendly to chat with.
I got to talk to Marco Rubio at a presidential rally in 2016, and later met Henry McMaster after getting a tour of his office, with the help of a former student of mine who is heavily involved in politics in Columbia.
I know that my list is not like meeting Elvis or George Lucas or Marilyn Monroe, but they're pretty special moments to me.

Some years ago I went in a quik shop in Greenville. Standing at the counter was Danny Ford buying cigarettes. He turned when I walked in this small shop and I said hi Coach. We exchanged pleasantries and he left and got in his old pick up.

Sat next to Anthony Munoz on a flight out of Las Vegas. Good conversation, he had some great stories.
Played Larry Nance in a game of one on one. Waxed me 11-2
Met and had short conversations with several entertainers while in Afghanistan while they were doing the USO thing. Kelly Pickler Toby Keith Kid Rock Wee Man from ####### - hilarious Had lunch with a table full of former Miss America's ranging from like 75 - 05. All really sweet ladies. Robin Williams Johnny Knoxville
and a ton of lesser knowns
Stuck in an elevator with Teller of Penn and Teller. One other guy in there with us talked his ear off. When the doors finally opened I just asked him if that gets old. He looked me dead in the eye and nodded his head yes. Didn't say a word.
Met a lot of old sprots stars while in the Air Force as they would come visit the base and some would get a ride in a F-16.
Met Chuck Yeager, part of a group that was selected to have lunch with him. Amazingly down to earth guy.

Met General William Westmoreland while paying golf at Yeaman's Hall and a year or so later had lunch with just me and him and the two owner's of High Hampton, in Cashiers. Told me some great stories about going to the White House and meeting with President Eisenhour who asked him if he could do something about that "#### footabll team" at West Point. At the time he was the Superintendent at West Point.

Not necessarily a celebrity, but I was a junior at Clemson and I was out drinking with some buddies in the late fall of 2015 and started chatting with this dude in the bathroom line at TTTs. We had chatted for a few minutes about football, Clemson, going to school there, and his son who was a football recruit in town on a visit. I didn't think anything of it because you meet a lot of parents with "kids visiting on recruiting trips" only to find out their kid is just in town for a high school camp and will never sniff an FBS roster. We concluded our conversation and I asked his name and he said something like "I'm Keith, Keith Henry. Look up my son, KJ. He's really hoping to go to school here."
