It needed a new hood pad for insulation and sound so I was shamed into painting it. I've been a week prepping it for paint and got two coats of Transtar 2K epoxy primer on it today. Tomorrow it gets a couple coats of single stage (1) black paint.

Saturday I'll put the hood pad on it and it should be good to go.

Next week, after the pad's glue is set I'll flip it over and get it ready for paint. It has four coats of high build polyester primer on it. First and second coats were wet on wet then sanding and the third and fourth coats wet on wet then sanded.

I have the two fenders, sunroof and two doors in that stage and two doors the trunk lid with the first two coats of HB primer sanded and have sanded the the remaining body and it's ready for a couple coats of the 2K epoxy primer which serves as a sealer. It prevents the original paint from a negative reaction with the new/fresh primers, paint and clear

I might finish it by next summer, maybe.

It's a '85 Mercedes 300 SD turbo. Black!

I'm using single stage paint under the hood so I won't have to spend the money on clear coat. The visible part of the car get either Glasurit or Spies Hecker and I'm not ready to buy the exterior paint/clear just yet. It looks like a $25oo purchase.

I knew little to nothing about diesel engine, w126 mercedes and only shot paint out of a rattle can. Most of that ended up dripping off.

I hadn't touched a wrench for decades back then. I started with a white 84 300SD and a black 380SE which was a gasser that tortured me due to someone filling it with gas/ethanol and then leaving it sit for 12 years. It ruined the fuel distributor. I kept it running on a prayer and every MB fan wanted to buy it, it was a dollbaby.

I liked the black body but loved that 5 cyl diesel which I know for a fact in one of the 750K-1 million mile engines. I transplanted the drive train from the white car to the black one, transfered the wiring harness with them, removed all the interior and put SEC color coat on all the vinyl and SEC surecoat on the leather after stripping it down.

I rebuilt the steering gear box, climate control, cruse control, replace all the vacuum pods under the dash while I had that out painting it black. You name it, I rebuilt it except the engine, injector pump, transmission and differential.

Now I've removed all detachable body parts and am about half way through a total restoration of the all the exterior sheetmetal. I had to cut and patch a bunch of rusty metal in the quarter panels and the dead wells just inside those qtr panels in the trunk.

The fun part was I learned to trouble shoot 40 y/old auto electronics, learned to solder, how to use sheet metal tools to take out dings, a ton of pneumatic tools and I'm getting really good with an HPLV paint gun.

The fun part is learning and remaining able to work 5-7 hours/day. I'm 72 years old, have 7 children,15 grands and 2 greatgrands. I'm near 15 on heart attacks, two bypass surgeries and 3 stents.

God is good to me to keep me this health for this long. Pray that I'll have the strength to remain active and alive.
