Ha. Yes. I've always thought that if Rachmaninoff were born 25 years later he'd have become a killer blues guitarist. Chopin almost already was.

Let's just start with Pre 'British invasion'
Buddy Holly Early Elvis Eddie Cochran Carl Perkins Chuck Berry Jerry Lee Lewis Roy Orbison
There is a ton of music that is in this - I wish you could still watch American Hot Wax - great movie about that time and great music in that movie.

Should give a couple of listens to Light Fuse, Get Away by Widespread Panic
Also went through a huge jazz phase and highly recommend Coltrane, Miles, Thelonius Monk, and Herbie Hancock
Lastly The Meters. If you've never done The Meters, do some of that. Simple and effective, the originators of New Orleans funk

Great question. All those listed in the thread are great gateways to so much more. For me, the stop with the BB King at age 14 was key. From there, was easy to rock or jazz.
I didn't know who he was. Was in a record store in my small town, had 5 whole dollars from grass cutting gigs. Rather than the usual $1 45rpm pop record, I splurged on an album, my first. Flipping through stacks, I saw a guy was "Live At Cook County Jail". I had no idea who or what he was, but playing at a jail sounded cool. Is not easy riding a bike with an album, but I made it home, and when the needle hit that first chord on that first song, I was gone. No more pop for me.

Harry Chapin and Dan Fogelberg type stuff. You'll might suffer a fate like mine. Music, for the most part, moved away and left me here.
