Wes Goodwin Analysis (DOES NOT HOLD MUCH WEIGHT)

My personal analysis of Wes Goodwin goes a little something like this. Wes Goodwin has a strong quality about him that makes him highly sought after in this business. He's really intelligent whenever it comes to coverage packages and setting formations that give a deceptive look. Where he lacks is not his ability to call plays, but rather the battle upfront which falls on Nick Eason and Chris Rumph.

This defense lacks the violence at the point of attack. Another issue that is serving as an Achilles Heel to this defense is linebacker play. Several times, I've witnessed the linebackers wait for the ball carrier to come to them. This allows the ball carrier to gain an additional 5 yards or so. Wes Goodwin is in charge of the linebacker development and coaching. Our linebackers are tackling as if they're afraid of contact with the ball carrier.

Brent Venables did NOT tolerate that at all. Arm tackles do not win games. The reason why Clemson defensive units in the past under Coach Venables were able to gain sacks and tackles for loss is because they ran to the ball and swarmed the ball carrier whether it be the QB or the RB. They played the ball and didn't care about the player so much. They played like rabid dogs and destroyed the ball carrier. Under Coach Venables, opposing teams were afraid to play against Clemson because they were known to hit hard and even injure ball carriers to include QBs. During some games, opposing teams took their starting QB out of the game for fear that they may get injured. We need that intimidating defense back.

The front 4 is gaining good penetration, but it counts for nothing if the LBs aren't reinforcing the penetration up front. The LBs can get into the backfield and disrupt plays, but they don't. They hang out on the boundary and in the flats and allow the ball carrier to come to them which sometimes extends drives for the opposing teams. This has to stop... Period!

If the opposing ball carrier isn't seeing stars and exhibiting snot bubbles after each play, then the defensive play wasn't executed correctly. It's just that simple. They need to start attacking the ball. Whenever a defense plays that way, the offense can somewhat rely on them to cover down for their mistakes on offense. That's what you call complimentary football. Clemson has never lost a game whenever they play in that fashion.

That's my assessment of the Clemson defense for what it's worth. While it may not be worth much, it's hard to argue with film.

Mostly correct, General. Wes coaches more of a "read & react" defense as opposed to the all out attacking style of BV. This is what you are seeing when LB's are making tackles, or missing them, after a 5 yard gain. These defenses are designed to prevent the big plays, which for the most part, Wes has done. If you remember, BV's "hair on fire" defense put terrific pressure on safeties and CB's and we gave up a number of big plays in big games. On the other hand, BV defense produced a ton of TFL's and sacks which we are getting very few of these days.

I guess the best defense would be a disguised mix of both styles, which is seldom seen these days. Like you, I miss all the TFL's and sacks we use to put up and I do not like the reactionary defense but it is what we have for now until we can get some DE's who can rush the passer and set the edge. Until that happens, Wes will cover the weaknesses rather than attack. That is just the way he thinks.

Great assessment, even Coach BV played a 3-3-5 defense one season due to a lack of depth on the D-Line. It worked decently, but cost us in the end.

Correct. It's not all on the front guys. Wes plays the analytics, which is a bend and don't break, high percentage style defense. It can be okay, and mathematically, is sound. But it ignores the mind games of an aggressive, attacking defense. VEnables likes an extremely aggressive defense with a ton of blitzes (which Wes never calls). It can lead to getting torched, but is the best style of defense in college where you can get into a QBs head and mask your weaknesses. Wes is more fit in the NFL.

Definitely some truth to this as well. I feel as if Clemson has a good enough back four to cover the pass attack or tackle a ball carrier that breaks loose in open space. The line backers are playing too soft in my opinion. Especially considering that you have a stud like Sammy Brown back there who could wreak havoc if only Wes would unchain him.

If you dont, you dont win, period. This candy @$$ defense would get CARVED UP if we somehow made the playoffs. Someone posted a few days ago about the year over year regression of this defense under Wes and it was incredibly stark. Maybe LBB? Apologies for the memory lapse, but moral of the story is, it told the only story that needed to be told.

It has been said for many decades: "the best pass defense is a good pass rush" You don"t get sacks regularly, you won't have any type of pass defense worth a dime. Clemson simply doesn't have a pass rush under Goodwin. The films don't lie. Bootom line is: Goodwin needs his walking papers.

You couldn't have given a more accurate definition. Wes Goodwin is trying to cover his a___! Perhaps the winds of change will occur, and Oklahoma will release BV.

Seems to me the further we get aways from Venables, the softer the defense gets... I have always said that our defense has reflected its coordinator. Venables brought tuffness... Wes has simply not...

The personality of any team reflects the personality of a coach. If he is fearful, the players will be fearful. If he is soft, the players will be soft. Vince Lombardi, the GREAT Packer head coach of the 1960s said, "Football is a game for madmen." Clemson's defense has the talent as I have always felt.
Now then need a "raging bull" to run it.

His lack of preparation for Louisville cost this team everything. A chance at an ACC title, a chance at the playoffs, and cost the program respect nationally and the fans have lost hope. Not a fan of his.

No one on either side of the ball was prepared for Louisville as it turned out. Wes was not alone there. That was a huge miss for this team after starting to win games after the opener. It is especiallv concerning after an open date and a night home game.

Wes Goodwin doesn't have the OVERALL talent as a Defensive Coordinator to do well anywhere, Pro or College. He does not have the MIND of an aggressor. There has to be some "angry" attitude with a defensive team. He does not tranfer that to a defense. Intensity and a mean streak has to be there. He is too easy going. He wouldn't have lasted 3 games under Nick Saban. He got a break because of Dabo Swinney's In House system. It takes GENERALS to build warriors...not frat boys. FIRE the guy. Let him sale insurance.

My argument is Wes does not have the “dogs” that Venebles had. Cannot really compare fairly in my own mind at least knowing the difference in personnel.

Deshaun Watson May Not Have Been As Good As We Believed

Let me clarify what I mean because Watson certainly is a once in a generation kind of QB. However, during the Deshaun Watson era, Clemson had a defense that would stack up 3 and outs against opposing offenses. This would give the Clemson offense tons of opportunities to march down field and score. When the Clemson defense was playing at that level, a 3 and out for Clemson or even an interception thrown by Deshaun Watson didn't mean too much. Many times, Watson was able to start at the Clemson 40 or better due to the defense pinning the opponent deep into their own territory. I can recall one season when Watson threw 19 interceptions, and we still made the playoff. This was because he could keep going back out there just three plays later and have another shot at getting a score. In short, whenever your defense is a juggernaut like the ones of old, the offense can take more risks, and they continue to have another shot at scoring in quick succession. The old adage goes, "Defense Wins Championships".
