First off, I have to believe, after watching him for a few years now, that he is uncomfortable in this position, pushed by the narrative that he is “different on field than he is on camera.” I think he is intelligent, but I don’t think he is the type to be CEO of this defense. I want to believe that he would be humble enough to stay on even as a “senior defensive analyst.” This is where he could do what he loves — the X’s & O’s without the worry and stress of running a full defense.

I think in 2021 Dabo was concerned about going away from that “Clemson Defense” standard & scheme that Brent installed years prior.

His personality just doesn’t fit what a defensive coordinator is supposed to be.
I’m sure he’s brilliant X’s and O’s though.

I 100 percent agree with you. Setting the edge, getting pressure on the QB, STOPPING THE RUN, all of that with some good — not always great — back-end play… which I’ve always been skeptical of Reed always playing soft… it seems like even with Brent, the one bad spot was the soft coverage the DB’s were allowing, giving up yardage we shouldn’t have. All of that said, we still had studs and lockdowns in those corner positions i.e Alexander, Tankersley, Mullen, AJ Terrell, Booth, Goodrich, Wiggins…

Agreed. The biggest missing ingredients have been fire and intensity.

Good schemes, low fire and intensity. The best defenses play with and edge and refuse to be blocked etc. Our guys have seemed to be going through the motions on defense and just never really play with that edge. That’s coming from the coordinator. He tries to be a fire and brimstone guy, but it’s just not part of his DNA. He’s a great guy to have in the booth, like he was for BV, but I just don’t think he’s the guy to be leading an elite level defense.
I’m not mad that Dabo gave him a shot, and it was working decently to start, but I’m afraid the defensive unit has lost its edge and we need new blood. Hate it for Wes… good dude who is great at analyzing defense, just not good what we need manning the head position IMO.

It was a terrible hire considering the circumstances the program was in at the time. He lived off of BVs past players for awhile.
He had never been a D coordinator in his life and all of a sudden he one for an elite program. One of the dumbest high risk moves I have seen in a long time.
Dabo should own up to it.

Hindsight is 20/20.
We were the 8th ranked defense in the country just last season, and that due to schemes and adjustments. But the fire just isn’t there and the defense is playing without emotion.
Take the knowledge and schemes and change the personality, and we’re golden. Wes just doesn’t have the DNA IMO.
Great rep and deserved the shot tho.

And I don’t hold Wes accountable bc if someone was dumb enough to offer that to me I would take it too just to see what happens. Considering his experience I think Wes did ok. But this was not his fault.

I question the X's and O's.
The defense was spaghetti soup schematically against Texas.
The gap splits were really stupid for what Texas was doing. Had LBs lined up outside or over the DE with a rather large split, that's a very inviting rushing lane.

Just missing that edge. Refuse to be blocked etc. watch UGA play defense. They play like they’re angry, and we just aren’t seeing that.

Exactly...I watched the Texas UGA game Friday and was thinking we don't have the defense to do what they did against Texas and it would be a long day for us and it was.

Yeah he would’ve been done after Sellers ripped our hearts out
Kyle McCord saved his job, then Nolan Hauser after McCord.
He’s shown that he his ceiling is below what we need to beat playoff teams.
Now don’t get me wrong, the defense made some adjustments and only allowed 10 points in the 2nd half against Texas. And we did get some stops like the 4th down and the interception.
But you’ve got to have a full game plan, not a plan for one half.
Which could be said about the Georgia game too. First half was great, the 2nd sucked.

Assuming he is no longer the defensive coordinator, I wouldn’t be surprised if we keep him in some role, just not defensive coordinator.
