Wes Goodwin

To be honest, I highly questioned this hire (or promotion tbh) and the jury still isn't in. But I thought the defense played well for the most part Saturday. They were constantly put in bad situations by the offense yet only gave up 12 points. Need more work on tackling but in the long run Peter Grif....I mean Wes Goodwin may be what this team needs.

I can see the defense getting better and better as the season progresses and they have been pretty solid so far. It is offense that I am worried about. They just aren't progressing at the same level right now, but maybe they do catch fire in the 2H.

Poor blocking! Coach Howard used to say, "you can't run the ball if you can't block!"

Yes, kind of hard to see that getting a whole lot better in short order...

Vince Lombardi used to say tackling and blocking were what it all boiled down to.

Schematically I have not had major problems with Wes's calls. The defense has performed well statistically. I thought they did a good job Saturday.

My only issues are some mismanagement at the end of halves/games although he did bring some pressure against WF that he did not bring late in half against FSU. Even BV had same issues at times.

The other main issue is tackling. We just seem to be fundementally poor at takling. Something that was not an issue in the past.

I believe it was Mickey Andrews that said good athletes are the best tacklers and it has less to to do with fundementals. Not sure. We have good athletes but our corners and LB's don't look as good in open space as they did in the past.

Last, this is completely intangible, but I miss the fire of BV and the agression that the D seemed to play with in the past. You see some flashes but there was an attitude and swager that is not there. Maybe we don't need that to be successful but I miss it.

long. He's done well. Defense is certainly not one of our major problems.

Poor tackling is usually an indication of limited hitting during practice as the season progresses(fear of injuries). This is a costly approach" IF" that is happening. I hope not. Better to hit and maintain physicality than to worry about getting players hurt. We have to be an aggressive football team to on BOTH sides of the ball to have a chance at winning.

Hitting in the preseason has been limited by the NCAA

the coaches hands are tied. There already was reduced amt in season due to rules and wear/tear based on longer seasons etc
