This hardened criminal was applying for a visa at the Mexican border, and was told she needed to go home to Canada. So, she tried to book a flight to Canada, and they instead took her into custody.

No crime. No criminal record. But no matter. Into the Gulag she went.

I started working in California and travelled back and forth between Canada and the US multiple times without any complications – until one day, upon returning to the US, a border officer questioned me about my initial visa denial and subsequent visa approval. He asked why I had gone to the San Diego border the second time to apply. I explained that that was where my lawyer’s offices were, and that he had wanted to accompany me to ensure there were no issues.

After a long interrogation, the officer told me it seemed “shady” and that my visa hadn’t been properly processed. He claimed I also couldn’t work for a company in the US that made use of hemp – one of the beverage ingredients. He revoked my visa, and told me I could still work for the company from Canada, but if I wanted to return to the US, I would need to reapply.

I was devastated; I had just started building a life in California. I stayed in Canada for the next few months, and was eventually offered a similar position with a different health and wellness brand.

I restarted the visa process and returned to the same immigration office at the San Diego border, since they had processed my visa before and I was familiar with it. Hours passed, with many confused opinions about my case. The officer I spoke to was kind but told me that, due to my previous issues, I needed to apply for my visa through the consulate. I told her I hadn’t been aware I needed to apply that way, but had no problem doing it.

Then she said something strange: “You didn’t do anything wrong. You are not in trouble, you are not a criminal.”

Were the Baddies

Hate to admit it, it it’s true.

We are behaving no better than Nazis in 1936 at this point. I was just reading the story about the PHD student from Turkey who was taken away on the street near Tufts University where she was legally residing as a Fulbright scholar. Her crime: writing a very nuanced and non-threatening op-ed in the student newspaper about Palestinian genocide. It was not anti-Semitic in any way, so you couldn’t even use that as an argument, as ridiculous as it is.

Y’all are just getting a taste of what’s to come. The courts aren’t gong to be able to stop this onslaught. It’s over.

After today’s treatment by Vance, you could argue that Greenland is looking a lot like Czechoslovakia must have looked to Germany back then.

You think so?

It’s more than likely that you have succumbed to the hyper-normalization of everything that’s gone over the last two months.

The defiance of due process isn’t normal, but in these cases it is now normalized, despite the laws on the books. Making people disappear without a single phone call or any legal proceeding isn’t a thing we should ever take lightly. How many legal Americans have been swept off the streets illegally? We will never know.

The fact that we have outsourced the handling of illegals to a for-profit prison state in Central America isn’t normal. How many people were sent down there by mistake, just based on some flimsy tattoos of roses as the only filter, if only because they needed to meet some arbitrary quota. Not normal.

And when has it ever been normal to arbitrarily rename major bodies of water just to troll your southern neighbors, while you plot and cajole your northern neighbors with threat of annexation every other day. Not normal.

These are but a few points, I could go on and on, and we are only two months in.

Not hypernormalization at all. I think you are making a bigger deal out of it than will be in the big picture for the country.

I disagree with you here. Their rights that are being violated are your rights, as well.

Mrs Slac teaches HS, one of her Scholars Bowl students has been absent for 2 weeks. She asked admin, they didn’t know anything. Mrs Slac knew where he lived because she’s picked him up for a Scholars Bowl meet before. She went to his house the other day, he was there heading shrimp and shucking oysters. She asked him why he wasn’t in school, his mom wouldn’t let him go. She was afraid ICE would take him. ICE had visited his neighborhood, tried to round up his mother, who has been a US citizen for10 years. And the kid was born here. Only reason she didn’t get taken is she called her lawyer when she saw ICE going into her neighbors house. He hopped in his car , came down, and diffused the situation. They went on, but said they’d be back.

What kinda shid is this? That kid and his mom have the same rights as you and me. This ain’t America, when this kinda crap goes on.

I am not for people being deported generally. I would let them all stay here unless they were in a gang, committing a crime of some other sort, or promoting or supporting a hate group or terrorist group in any way whatsoever. If you are here on a student visa and you are an activist that is somewhat radical in any way I am not sympathetic. As far as that kid you mention, of course I don't support him getting rounded up.

It’s Betar US. The fact they have so much influence on the government, I assume through Stephen Miller, is pure evil. Even the ADL considers them extremist.

They are making it dangerous for US travellers in countries besides Russia, Iran, and N Korea. I expect to start seeing some random unjust detentions in other countries.

Like the amoral rapist/idiot Hegseth who has no problems with war crimes. One reason good moral people will not condone war crimes is right vs wrong. The other reason is to protect our own soldiers and citizens from abuses from other countries by setting a moral example.

That’s very Himleresque.

Forget the part where at least one has been locked up for 10 months, long before Trump was inaugurated but hey Trump is Hitler.

If you ask him and he answers honest, yes Trump does want to be Hitler. Hitler is one of his heroes. Just read any account from his wives, associates, and people from the previous administration.

Our ICE system is inhumane when people can get thrown in jail for essentially nothing, and I don't care who the POTUS is.

Trump is using this same system, and ratcheting it up, making it worse, making it more inhumane. People's basic rights are being taken away.

Your argument isn't refuting my original post, and only trying a very weak "but Biden" rebuttal. The fact is that Trump is attacking immigrants, legal and illegal, and stripping people of rights. Biden is not a saint, but there's no comparison between the two....and you know that already of course.
