Saw this quote on ESPN.com this morning, from the Coastal Carolina coach:
"You're not building a program anymore," Coastal Carolina coach Tim Beck told reporters Thursday. "This isn't a program. Each year, you just build a team. You try to find the best team that you can put out there every year, and you know the team is going to get hit by free agency."
Dabo will never fully embrace the portal and see it as an equal with recruiting. And I agree with him on that. For him, the purpose of the portal is to fill any gaps that have arisen through injury or transfers. But it's a last resort, simply BECAUSE transfers don't build a program. They simply build a team for that one season. Til those guys leave, and more come in, etc, etc.
I know lots of armchair quarterbacks and sports reporters who have never played or coached are saying he needs to use the portal, but I'm trusting his judgement and agree with his perspective on this one. Coach Beck nailed it. The portal builds a team - not a program. CDS is all about building a program. And he's doing (and done) pretty well so far.

What some want and expect is for Clemson to lay down so much money we get a team like LSU had the last time we played them. It was a one and done team and look at LSU since then.
LSU fired the coach who bought all those players and they are in the dumps of college football again.

No one here wants to abandon high school recruiting and rely exclusively on the transfer portal.
I know such characterizations make the anti-portal arguments sound better, but they aren't true.

Can you point to a post by "some" who want Clemson to be like LSU or any other programs building a team out of the portal? On the other hand, any reasonable fan would want Dabo to fill the gaps from the portal and just as important, pay the going rate recruiting HS talent as it is not possible to have a great without it.

He's definitely a program builder. There has been an unquestionable drop off over the last few seasons, and Clemson football will always be fair game for scrutiny and criticism from fans and armchair experts, but it has to be kept in perspective and taken for what it is.
I just checked the internet, and Clemson won the 2024 ACC Football Championship game, and was selected for the 12-team playoff. Whatever Dabo is doing, it worked this season. Put that with his overall record, and it remains pretty impressive, even as the game itself is changing.

I just checked the internet, and Clemson won the 2024 ACC Football Championship game, and was selected for the 12-team playoff. Whatever Dabo is doing, it worked this season. Put that with his overall record, and it remains pretty impressive, even as the game itself is changing.
Overall record is great but there was a big shift in the level of talent we attracted in the last three classes. The only variable which changed is NIL (portal and HS recruiting). It is clear we are living on past talent and there will be a huge drop after next season in terms of available talent.

You cant continually replace experienced players that portal out of the program with freshmen that you have to develop. That plan catches up with you sooner than later. Especially when we no longer pull the high school talent we used to.

he built a program years ago and has been watching it crumble since about 2018 man. If he continues on the current path, we are at best a 7-8 win team tops within a year or 2, and will never compete for titles again. Football has changed and it is not for the better, but it is the sad reality we face. He shouldnt hold Clemson hostage over his stubbornness. He has done great things but needs to adapt or retire and let Clemson have a fair shot at competing on a level playing field. The Texas game will be further proof of our decline . We have no depth and it will prove again to be a a problem in this game. We will be winded and out of gas in the 2nd HALF with no real talented backups to help our starters. As much as I HATE to admit it, he has basically allowed USUC to pull even with us in talent and this years 4th ranked class in the ACC should have served a major warning to all tiger fans of the decline that is coming quickly. We are headed to Texas with no running game, and no experienced backs to help out thanks to our coaches and lack of recruiting and personnel management all year. As good a job as Dabo did 6-8 years ago has no bearing on now, he has not made sound coaching hires to maintain what he built nor has he recruited well enough either.

it is negative but it is also reality. Continuing to stick you head in the ground and ignore the problem will continue to end up in more losses to our rival and make us a 7-8 win team happy to make the cheez it bowl.

But those program days are gone. Gotta evolve with it or expect 3-4 losses a year. Just a fact. I agree with everything you said except that Dabo doesn’t need to evolve. He does. Unless the last four years have been fun for you. We’re barely beating teams we used to blow out by 40. It’s not as fun.
