with Mexico. All we got was some troops at the border? Why would he give up so quickly on the opportunity to make America financially greater? Was he scared off by the markets dropping a few percent?

Trump has been bombarded with calls from rich people warning about his tariffs and a potential trade war. Once he saw the markets confirm their warnings he had to find a way to save face and calm the markets.

You made the claim...back it up.
I did do quick research and didn't see any mention of this.
I'm not saying there's not been cases of someone in the military helping the cartels, but that's not the same as saying 10,000 Mexican troops were sent to the border to help stop illegal immigration, but instead the military helped the cartels.
You're the one making bold claims, so, again, back it up.

With all respect, the linked article reflects a lack of understanding about how hard ball negotiations are done.
Trump’s primary direct objectives with both Mexico and Canada is to get them to control their borders(to significantly reduce the influx of drugs and undesirable illegal aliens, and reduce barriers to trade for American goods into Mexico & Canada, respectively.
Indirect objectives are to discourage foreign investment in Mexico for goods which are to be made predominantly for the American marketplace.
Sophisticated negotiators don’t reveal how their intended objectives are to be met via an obvious tactic.
I’ll admit to having never participated in a negotiation involving politician. (My role in negotiations are usually behind the scenes stuff; my experience is in B2B realm.)
From Trump’s first term, we know that he says things for public dissemination that makes the public think that they understand both the objectives of a negotiation and the tactics by which the objective will be achieved. By now, attentive Americans should realize that his stated objectives are sincere, but that his stated negotiations tactics are smoke and deception. This is the smart thing to do; smart negotiators never publicly reveal all of their tactics and often not all of their objectives.
The linked article exposes an author who doesn’t understand how these things work.

With all due respect to you as well, I fully understand what Trump is trying to do and should do especially in trying to cajole Mexico into doing more to stop the inflow of drugs and illegal aliens into our country. On a lesser scale, I support trying to get Canada to do more as well.
However, a more honest approach would be to threaten these tariffs if these countries don't do more, but not to spread the obvious BS to us that tariffs are great for our country and will lead to prosperity and might well end the need for a federal income tax.
I 100% support Trump's attempts to secure the border and begin to remove people who broke into the country, beginning with the violent ones. I applaud this. Certainly Harris would not have done anything on this matter if she had been elected.
On the other hand I find it dishonest of Trump to tell us that tariffs are going to be good for our economy and lead to great prosperity. That simply isn't true. I also find it very off putting and juvenile of Trump to spout nonsense about bringing in Canada as the 51st state and putting the PM as the Governor. It's also complete nonsense to publicly clown around with Denmark over Greenland.
Every idea and every proposal that Trump is considering isn't bad, but it's beneath the office of the President to speak in a stream of conscious manner and essentially be a bully.
He is simply NOT a statesman and that's just the fact.

I was certain a lot of his crazy the first time around was designed to influence markets so his cronies could profit. I know half of it is that he wants to be a constant topic of conversation. All this attention Elon is getting is bad for his mental health, so expect something off the wall by Friday.

Been happening since COVID supply-chain shock...
Feb 4, 2025, 9:07 AM
[ in reply to Major corporate CEOs discussing onshoring with their boards as we post...*** ] |
|
supply-chain security/reliability was the main push...not tariffs.
The problem is...THERE IS LITTLE-TO-NO DOMESTIC CAPCITY for many type items. We are essentially at full-employment for those that actually want to work.
I mentioned on here yesterday that I was part of round-table forum at the NEMA conference in November and almost unanimously, the CEOs present all said/asked exactly the same question..."where is the labor going to come from for domestic manufacturing expansion?" Availability of quality labor is most company's biggest problem already!
For 4+ years we've been trying to replace the items we purchase out of China with domestically-produced items and we have had a very difficult time. And if we can find a US-source, it's often time 2-3 times the price of the Chinese source, including the 25% tariff. I many cases we tooled up the US source and are running a split-source arrangement to keep the domestic option available, but mitigate some of the cost increases. In many other cases, we can't even find US companies willing to quote on new projects, so we've gone to India and eastern Europe.
