Texas Tech paying Canady $1 million

Is this the smartest use of NIL money we’ve seen? The reason I say that is because a softball pitcher has the largest impact on a team for an individual in any college sport. They can pitch every game and dominate more.
Getting the no-doubt best pitcher in the game guaranteed Texas Tech a massive improvement in the program with just 1 player. And this was a softball program that had been nothing before.
You can pour millions into a QB or basketball star but there’s no guarantee it’ll improve the program as much.

It's probably the best NIL return in terms of wins. However, I question the ROI in terms of revenue or program stature. If Texas Tech is dominant in softball, does anyone really care outside Lubbock? A star QB may not guarantee playoffs, but it means butts in seats, concessions sold, and TV eyeballs/revenue. Same with a 5 star basketball player. I guess the big money donor loves softball.

and is on national spotlight for a few weeks every May. I do think there is brand value in that.
Texas Tech is also trying in football, but haven't seen the translation there yet. Much harder place to make an impact in.

You ever been to Lubbock? You'd have to pay big dollars to get anyone there. LOL

Weird how the interstate does not go through it, but past it where you can see it in the distance.

Lubbock IS bad enough. But I used to fly in there and then drive through two hours of nothingness to pluck crop samples from Muleshoe, Texas for a week...every month of growing season.

But it's not like Lubbock is some joke of a place. 270k people live there, double digit population growth each of the past 2 decades and a major university is located there.

Totally agree. Excellent synopsis.
As for roi, no it won't be revenue generated $$s but softball is popular. It's a growing sport and generates eyeballs. Say they win, I would guarantee you its way more through synergy than spending 1 million on an ad campaign marketing the school... so yes, a national championship in any sport is well worth the 1 mil. Athletes tend to follow sports and sporting events and news.
As T_I_P said, a bball player or qb won't get you much if the team can't block or rebound.
If Cooper Flagg had gone to Furman, would Furman been a final 4 contender?

AJ Dyantsa. Will they become a final four type team immediately because of one top player?

Basketball is nothing like softball in the way one player can dominate an entire season.
The TT pitcher threw every pitch at the WS so far for TT.

but here we are, in South Carolina or nearby, most likely, talking about it. ESPN has been carrying the games, and ABC carried a game or two as well. Softball is becoming bigger and bigger every year. Just look at our team and how often we sell out the stadium.

I went down this Texas Tech rabbit hole and its a really good story. First year HC thats as country as eggs and a smart motivator and softball coach that gets everything from his players. That pitcher is a big part of their success but still just part. I hope they win it all.

She's 33-5 with a 0.89 ERA. There's probably 20 teams in the country, including Clemson, who'd be in the exact same spot as TT if she was their ace.

Thats true. Kinda my point (and maybe yours too) is there is a handful of teams that she's a "game changer" for. But she's not enough for any team alone include Texas Tech.

Ironically, last year when she committed to Texas Tech, it made a few Oklahoma fans mad that she didn't pick them. They were making comments to her like enjoy the money because you'll never see a world series.
