Some of us donors knew this 7 years ago and it's just now coming to light. The only way that new building was even started was with his money initially. He put up his own money to show the valued investment in a new facility and program. His team also had a makeshift locker room his final year due to construction of the new facility. His incoming class was in the top 10 nationally. We haven't sniffed a class like that in the last 7 years. What's real interesting is that Jack only had Common Market for 1 year while Monte had it for 5 of the 7. Interesting when he loses the Common Market he has worst records then Jacks and has a better facility to recruit.
People say all the time that they hated losing to USC in Omaha especially when they went on their National Championship run. They said Leggett didn't recruit the state and Tanner did and won with SC players. If you go back and look at that USC roster you have 3 maybe 4 from SC that contributed regularly to those Nattys, the same as Clemson at the time. The truth is there are better baseball players less than 2 hours away in Atlanta area and Charlotte then this state. We use to recruit Baseball nationally like football. Then when USC happen to go an a lucky run people got pissed and used the excuse of state talent that really wasn't there. That would be like going to Dabo right now and telling him he can't recruit nationally he needs to recruit more SC talent. If you can pick the top talent from the nation and area go do it. You have a full amount of SC talent now on this baseball team and its one of the worst in our history currently.

Just because Monty is not the answer doesn’t mean that Leggett was. His last few teams were hard to watch. Poor fundamentals and lacking talent . A change was needed but Monte has not produced.

Leggett would not recruit hardly anyone under 6 feet (Wingo great example) and recruited mostly left handed or switch hitters. His philosophy for the most part was most great left handed pitchers went straight to pro's out of high school and during the regular season you would not see that many during games. However, it always came back to bite him in the playoffs or Omaha because the great lefty's with nasty stuff were the ones that usually took us out.

Not sure where you get your information, although Wingo was a terrific college baseball player, Leggett recruited Mike Freeman who is still playing in the bigs. As far as smaller players how about Casey Stone, Herman Demmick and Addison Johnson to name a few. Any one who thinks Monty is a better candidate to lead Clemson is either blind or simply baseball challenged. Admittedly Jack had a few tough years but he never quit believing or looking for answers.

I said hardly, im sure there are exceptions to that rule. and information from a nephew who was recruited by Leggett and that was what his reputation and philosophy told to him by the coaches(which was pretty much backed up by all the years I watched players play under Leggett). He also did not a very good reputation with SC high school coaches and even worse with travel ball coaches from SC. However, it worked well for the most part for Leggett with W/L's, until, like I said, he got to the better teams in the tournament and his teams would get beat normally by a great LH pitcher against his LH good batters.

Good for not believing in travel ball. I coach. Support American legion and play for free. Have a friend that played for d1 and now with the rays. He played American legion. Good competition and helping the guys who served. Why waste money and teams mostly on travel ball don’t care about arms. Traveling every weekend and playing many doubleheaders on hot afternoons.

Seemed to have better relationships with the high school coaches up north.

Corbitt and O'Sullivan.
anyone else that says otherwise is lying.
Same thing could happen to Swinney so its not a slam on Leggett.

Assistant coaches don’t get nearly enough credit.

As you stated, Leggett losing Corbin and O’Sullivan set the program back.
Dabo was barely above .500 his first few years here as a head coach, and it wasn’t until he had better assistant that we started to win more.
I’ve harped a lot on our basketball program needing more funding for better assistants, as I believe that’s holding us back. Glad to see the new assistant hires. I believe they will make a big difference.

Thought Leggett played too conservative at times but hindsight being 20/20 I felt a lot better about where we were under him vs where we currently are. We have gone from being a potential winner of the ACC championship to probably not even participating. Huge drop off.

We had a hiccup in 08 and then what did he do after that. Yeah it’s hard game now and he had a drop off one would say but add in new facility and top class coming in and etc. yeah only time clemson has been reasonable was 2015 and those were jacks guys. We got trounced at last two regionals under monte. People could say bad draws. Sure but guess what the ball is the same and the bat. The game doesn’t change!

Listened to first 30 minutes. Heard about Hall of Fame speech. Read various articles in the past four-five years. Jack is consumed with Jack. How many times do you hear Dabo mention he and Kath did this …. Did that…. Coach Noonan thank individuals …Larry Penley acknowledged his family and staff and set Jordan in good spot. Jack talked about travel, “we” he has 400 contacts in his phone. He coached USA …. he wrote a book and he meets with these people. We will never know exactly what went on in those meetings. Kyle knows and Drad knows and Jack told. Not a Drad fan but Kyle is solid and really smart. Each time I read something about Jack or hear him talk it always becomes about how unfairly he was treated. I don’t believe it.

Yea from interviews I have heard he did seem to be very appreciative of Clemson and his time here (I believe he actually still lives in Clemson) but you do get the sense he is struggling on processing how things ended.

We need a reconciliation with Leggett

I’m not saying we need him back as a coach or looking to re-litigate the decision to move on from him; but it’s a fact that the way the departure was handled is a weight around the neck of our program. Leggett is a HOF team USA coach that is supremely respected in the college baseball community. The way he left turned off many potential coaching replacements and is still a black mark. It appears that we may be engaging in another baseball coaching search sooner rather than later; I think it would behoove us to include jack in the search process.

He did get inducted into the Clemson HOF last year. I would of thought that would have healed some old wounds. I’m sure whatever happened about killed him.
Buddy of mine was down and the baseball game was going on and it may have been about finished but for some reason he was out on the road and he said you won’t believe who stopped and asked me about the score. JL

Please don't ask him to come for an interview. That did not work well for Florida when they wanted Spurrier to come in for an interview. Just give the man his job back, if he is willing to take it.

I’d like to give him the job back but then again move on. Either jack back, a clemson guy coaching somewhere or spend big money and get someone like Godwin at ecu or Holliday at osu. They won’t offer jack, clemson won’t spend big money. If you look at baseball now who succeeds the most. The guys like Corbin and o Sullivan. The guys who are old school and have clubs that move runners and does how the game is suppose to be played. They aren’t worried about launch angles and exit velo.

It is interesting though on how many people want to work here across the university but clemson hardly hires people inside who knows the system. I know this for a fact. It is also interesting on how clemson baseball doesn’t hardly recognize previous players and do a poor job at promotions. The other sports do a great job. I mean for example we had a Seth beer bobblehead night and they have rusty adkins recognition the last home series this year. Well clemson that game is at 3pm on a Friday and students are gone and many people work. How do you think the crowd will be?

We are being coached by someone who not only has no ties to our program or history, he cut his teeth with our arch-nemesis - in the one sports other than Women’s basketball that they exceeded us. The Ray Tanner / Jack Leggett coaching trees do not have much overlap. DRad nuked our baseball program’s institutional memory when he fired Leggett and brought in Lee.
