Just a few notes I have found to be interesting
A few observations after spending time with the coaches, with Cade, the players and Coach Swinney yesterday.
Let me start with this - I was listening to two of the OL talking to a Walhalla coach last week at Cade's camp. It was the usual stuff you hear every year - this team is the most focused, the most prepared, it's different, etc. They all say the same thing. But then I heard something different - one of them said, "We brought almost everybody back from last season, and we want to run this back and do it the right way. And the best part about it is that Coach Swinney kept it in the family (no portal)." Interesting how the players feel about it.
After spending a few days with Cade, he's bigger and stronger, and no we don't know how any of that will translate onto the field. But while I was at his camp, I texted Nikki and said, "He's different. He's growing up, and you can tell in his maturity." Indeed, one Clemson coach told me, "He has every tool in the toolbox. He has everything he needs to be successful. But last year, the game would get fast, and he would speed up. We just need him to slow down." Cade knows that, and if I had to make a guess based on what I've seen from him demeanor-wise, he will make a huge jump this season. He has also said a few times that it's good to talk to people who know what he's going through - it's tough getting all of the criticism all of the time, and it wears on a young man. But he takes it all in stride and with a smile.
Finally, I talked with linebacker Barrett Carter yesterday and I asked him to name on DL who would make a name for himself this season. We all know Peter Woods and TJ Parker, but who is one guy who will burst onto the scene. His answer surprised me - Jaheim Lawson. He said Lawson has put on weight and muscle and has the speed to be an elite pass rusher.
With all that said, camp starts in six days.

To me, it’s pretty obvious that current players would prefer that they not have the threat if portal players being brought in. It gives them more job security than having to worry about a new, potentially more talented and experienced player coming in to challenge them for playing time.
Now, I do think the lack of competition can be a big negative, especially for position groups that need an infusion of talent and depth in order to be better. But that wasn’t the point of my comment at all.

How is that shocking? If you work with a group of people would you rather see those you know being promoted within and have “your guys” advance or would you rather see somebody off the streets show up who you don’t know and haven’t witnessed any hard work from take the jobs of “your guys?” If you have formed a bond with your teammates you would obviously want to see them have success. Not some stranger step in and take their spot. And at the end of the day anybody would sit back and have more admiration and respect for the coaches and or leadership for sticking with their own. That’s a no-brainer.

Yeah bc trying to get a couple players to help fill gaps in your roster is the same thing as teams like FSU using the portal to build 90% of their team, loyalty be ######

we have no gaps apparently or else Dabo would've been able to land ONE....

of them instead of them opting for Penn State, Arkansas, UNC, & GT......TOP program powers in that group........smh
Dabo "trying" (notice the quotes) to get Olineman is him "admitting" there are gaps.......he landed NONE soooooooooooooooooooooooo..........now the gaps are filled??????

STARTING roster in some capacity then you're blind.............I don't care if it was Olineman, WR, or even QB.........we are not "TOO GOOD" at those positions to think that the portal couldn't upgrade our talent............again, a few not Colorado style.

“Trying” truly emphasized here….
With the words Dabo has used and him putting it out there how he feels about the portal, Clemson will never be able to get anyone from the portal that could be a true benefit to the program.
We hear every pre-season how this team is “different” and “focused”. Prove it August 31st.

In terms of Lawson, this is great news. I doubt we hear from the haters who moaned that we signed another product of Daniel HS.
In thinking about the portal, one way to mitigate would be to engage with upfront NIL for guys like David Sanders. Maybe not lead with NIL but have it available on key recruits as needed. We obviously will not be able to outbid the rich teams, but a guy like Sanders who really wanted to come to Clemson could have considered us had we made some type of offer.

I know it goes against the blue collar/underdog/pull ourselves up by our bootstraps persona many of you want us to have, but it’s true.
Dabo is a big reason for that.

We just choose to use it to keep our current roster vs use it in recruiting, hence us having one of the lower transfer rates in general…. I prefer to keep a Barrett Carter or Mafah vs letting one of them go to spend it on Trevor Etienne or an incoming freshman 5 star that we don’t know if they can even play at a high level in college.
