Free Sammy: Don't suspend him.

May 4, 2012, 7:09 PM

Sammy Watkins is unquestionably the most valuable player on the entire Clemson football team. Don't ruin the entire season by sitting your best player, money generator, and let's not kid ourselves the only chance at having even the slightest possibility of what Clemson fans everywhere are SO hungry for, a BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Marijuana is something that is here to stay in today's society, especially in the age range of 19-24 (College years). Most of us have taken part in this social activity. I've done it, you've done it, my kids will do it, your kids will do it, your kids kids will do it.

Spare Sammy of ridiculous suspension times which could ruin a Potential shot at a National Championship in 2012-2013. Clemson is uniquely positioned for this upcoming season. With the level of progression that all these young and really talented players are making skill wise, on offense, defense, and special teams. Compared to the other teams in the weakened acc (with the exception of fsu). Clemson should have a terrific chance at not only winning the ACC Championship, but could potentially run the table which increases your chances at having another Clemson NATIONAL championship.

You have to have every single gun fully loaded when you play the SEC. The SEC drives the bus in college football, and you are just being contrarian if you think other wise. Auburn and Gene Chizik will be more prepared to face the fighting dabos than any other team Clemson will face this season. After all this is a system that won a recent National Championship and has to consistantly prepare for Alabama & Sabin, LSU & Miles, Georgia, Florida, and a freakishly physical south Carolina defense. Where Dabo and the boys have to prepare for Virginia Tech (Clemson is getting good at that), Florida State , Boston college, wake forest, and there is erosion from there on. Clemson has two games this season against relevant SEC teams, and the first one is week one against Auburm. Not to mention in a location where Clemson football hasn't played its very best in the past decade.

You HAVE to have your playmaker, your superstar, your hope in the lineup. The energy, play making ability, and extra deminsion that Sammy delivers to the Clemson offense & special teams is key for the success of the team, and is irreplaceable.

Sammy is just being a normal human being going through typical 2012 college student experiences. He's an adult. Give him a "slap on the wrist" and educate him on the harmful things he could be doing to himself, and then move on. It's already enough that he will be taking a mental beating for what he has done. You think having his Mug Shot and police report for the viewing pleasure of not only his fans and followers on tigernet, but for people all over the country to see. Isn't enough? Do you know how many people across the country today have seen either on a Television or non sports related website that "Clemson football star Sammy Watkins arrested for drugs". Do you honestly think the embarrassment of being arrested while your already on a national radar isn't enough?

Sammys real punishment is outside of football. Let the kid suit up week one, and start the campaign to a potential National Championship season, on the right foot.

A one or 2 game suspension will fit the crime.

May 4, 2012, 7:14 PM

It's just pot.

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

Did you read the charges, sir? There was also a controlled narcotic within SW's or the passenger's possession. The way I read it more than marijuana was involved and that could be a real troublesome thing for Clemson program.
Second thought---who provided SW a nice used white Cadillac in recent days? Would concern me if I were Dabo or Terry Don or J. Barker.
Sammy should have known better. Per articles I have read, he grew up in a drug-infested neighborhood where his Mom and stepdad didn't want him outside with the thugs dealing drugs and looking for trouble.

Yawn. You're contrarian. It was adderall. What stimulant does a large percentage of People in this country owe thanks too for the degree hanging on their wall?

To your points

May 4, 2012, 7:41 PM

Are you sure what it was, Neon? I am willing to wait for the presented evidence. This young guy (& helluva football player) lost his bearings and showed a lot of need for some mentoring from folks that care other than just Saturday afternoon worshipers.
I hope Dabo can get him help and straigthened out.

Let's see: new car, scholarship, support from those who care, selection on elite teams, etc. Oh wait! Almost forgot. Guess academics don't matter. Just a national championship. Too bad. I heard he had joined a church in Anderson. Guess he missed the message. So disappointed.
Yes, CJ. You are still my hero.

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

Wrong...

May 4, 2012, 8:12 PM

Sammy Watkins is NOT a "regular college student". He is a high-profile student athlete and, as such, is held to higher standards of behavior. Maybe you've done it, but I've never smoked marijuana. It ISN'T "just part of college life. And even if it were, that needs to change. It's against the law, whether you like it or not. This is not about football. Attitudes like yours are what's wrong with sports and why athletes think they're entitled to be stupid.

Re: We can become USUC2 or we can let our players ...

May 4, 2012, 8:33 PM

know this is not going to happen at Clemson by any one. He should be suspended and we should make our policy public. We see what happened with Garcia at USUC when he never missed a game.

Let's not get too crazy on him. He did break the law and shamed his school and should be punished, but let's not get carried away here.

Re: Wrong...(baseball fan)

May 6, 2012, 2:16 AM [ in reply to Wrong... ]

You're correct that Sammy isn't a normal college student, but that's not at all the point I was trying to make. He is going through "normal 2012 (take note on the year ) college EXPERIENCES ". It's 2012 sir,he had marijuana and and adderall. It's not like he beat down a woman or robbed a bank. It's enough that he has to actually deal with the charges alone , and also from the embarrassment of the situation alone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thing is Clemson could suspend him for.....

May 4, 2012, 9:48 PM

the AU,Ball St., and Furman games and I believe CU would still be 3-0 after those games

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We would still be in the game without Sammy

May 4, 2012, 10:06 PM

But it's better to be safe than sorry.

Sammy needs to get disipline like any other player

May 5, 2012, 9:45 PM

weather they are a starter or benchwarmer. You can't let player off the hook just because they are better at catching passes. Besides the person who would be harmed most by going light on him would be Sammy himself.

That was awfully cute that you called me a coot. Also telling me I'm trash just really tears me to pieces. I suppose you're not educated or mature enough to realize that everyone who has a different opinion is someone fishing for a useless argument. That would be so moronic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not suspending him sends the wrong message

May 5, 2012, 10:30 PM

Nobody is above the law. We can win without Sammy and he should be suspended. He broke the law and that has consequences. He has been a model citizen up to this point and that goes into it. But he needs to miss game time. Watching his team play knowing he can't help will hopefully drive the point home
